Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i porównanie potencjału gospodarczego sąsiadujących ze sobą polskich województw (lubelskie i podkarpackie) i ukraińskich obwodów (lwowski, wołyński i zakarpacki). Obszar ten tworzy Polsko-Ukraiński Region Transgraniczny. Zarówno polskie, jak i ukraińskie części regionu należą do słabiej ekonomicznie rozwiniętych obszarów swoich krajów. Parytet siły nabywczej PKB na głowe mieszkańca (w USD) w wymienionych dwóch polskich województwach jest dwa razy wyższy niż w trzech wymienionych obwodach ukraińskich.

The Polish-Ukrainian transborder region consists of: on Polish side provinces: lubelskie and podkarpackie, on Ukrainian side oblasts: volhynian, lvov and zakarpattia. Both Polish and Ukrainian parts of the transborder region belong to less economically developed regions of their countries. Purchase power parity of GDP per capita (expressed in US dollars according to official rate in Poland and Ukraine) in podkarpackie (7.7 thous.) and lubelskie (7.6 thous.) regions are above two times higher then in lvov (3.7 thous.), volhynian (3.3 thous.) and zakarpattia (2.9 thous.) regions.

Polish regions bordering with regions of the other EU Member States are currently facing new development challenges. Inter alia a perspective of joint activities within the European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation is wide open. In this setting the article presents experiences of a study over cross-border cooperation potential concerning Silesia Region (Poland) and Moravian-Silesian Region (The Czech Republic). The areas under scrutiny are: transportation, tourism, economy, energy sector, culture, human capital linked to education and HEI cooperation, environment.
