The article focuses on the background of Hieronim Feicht’s Requiem, which was written during World War II. The main aspect of it is to present main thoughts on mass settings composed by Feicht and to give basic information about their performances given by the choir of theological seminary students of the Congregation of the Mission in Krakow-Stradom. Many of extant documents provide us with precise knowledge about the repertoire and solemnities during which it was sung. Except for performances, the article presents the praxis of performing requiem masses in the first half of the 20th century. Taking this context into consideration, the author presents a brief analysis of the Feicht’s Requiem Mass setting.

The article focuses on the functioning of crossing quotations in Anna Akhmatova's Requiem. The author demonstrates that the image of the monument in the Epilogue is based on complex semantic relationships with the genre model of XXX Ode by Horace and the reminiscences of Dante's Divine Comedy.

Moja droga do sacrum

It is my profound conviction that it is better to write music which is “my own” than the one which is just “new”. I have therefore distanced myself from the musical avant­‑garde and I have discovered sacred music as my creative path. It includes over a dozen large­‑scale vocal­‑instrumental works, such as Vesperae pro defunctis, Requiem, Via crucis, Resurrectio, Missa de Maria a Magdala, Magnificat & Nunc dimittis, Miserere, four Symphonies – of Providence, of Love, of Angels and on the Mercy of God, as well as a wide range of a cappella choral compositions. Works exploring the theme of transience (Vesperae pro defunctis, Requiem) and those linked to the spirituality of the Passion and Easter (Via crucis, Resurrectio) constitute other important strands in my output. In order to describe my musical idiom I have coined the term “renewed tonality”, which seems to me to fit the sound material that I employ in my pieces. The article cites the documents of the Catholic Church relating to music, including the texts by Popes Pius X and Pius XII, and the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. In writing sacred music I am trying to follow the Catholic Church’s voice expressed in these documents, for I believe that sacred music should be holy and universal. I also follow the musicologist Bohdan Pociej in invoking the four ways in which composers enter the sphere of the sacrum: religious theme, religious climate, sacred time and sound, and sacred form, all of which find their reflection in my music.

Wychodzę z założenia, że lepiej pisać muzykę „własną” niż „nową”. Dystansuję się więc od muzycznej awangardy. Odnalazłem swoją drogę w tworzeniu muzyki sakralnej. Zaliczam do niej przede wszystkim kilkanaście dużych form wokalno­‑instrumentalnych, takich jak Vesperae pro defunctis, Requiem, Via crucis, Resurrectio, Missa de Maria a Magdala, Magnificat & Nunc dimittis, Miserere oraz cztery symfonie – o Opatrzności, miłości, aniołach i miłosierdziu, a także kilkadziesiąt kompozycji chóralnych a cappella. Ważnymi etapami mojej drogi były dzieła związane z przemijaniem – Vesperae pro defunctis i Requiem, oraz z nurtem duchowości pasyjnej i paschalnej: Via crucis i Resurrectio. Na potrzeby swojego języka muzycznego zaproponowałem pojęcie „tonalność odnowiona”, które dobrze przystaje do materiału dźwiękowego, którym się posługuję w swoich utworach. W artykule przywołuję dokumenty Kościoła katolickiego odnoszące się do muzyki, w tym teksty papieży Piusa X i Piusa XII oraz Konstytucję o liturgii świętej Soboru Watykańskiego II. Komponując muzykę sakralną, staram się podążać za głosem Kościoła katolickiego wyrażonym w tych dokumentach. Uważam bowiem, że muzyka sakralna powinna być święta i powszechna. Za Bohdanem Pociejem przywołuję cztery poziomy wnikania twórców w przestrzeń sacrum, tj.: temat religijny, nastrój religijny, czas i dźwięk sakralny oraz forma sakralna, które można odnieść również do mojej muzyki.
