Handel detaliczny stanowi ważny i interesujący obszar badań prowadzonych w poszczególnych krajach Europy. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja zakresów badań, które mogą być podejmowane zarówno w skali lokalnej, krajowej, jak i międzynarodowej. W artykule zaprezentowano również najważniejsze wnioski wynikające z realizacji badań nad funkcjonowaniem handlu detalicznego w Europie. W badaniach wykorzystano zarówno wtórne źródła informacji (statystyki międzynarodowe, zagraniczne raporty badawcze, źródła czasopiśmiennicze) oraz źródła pierwotne (ankieta, badania eksperckie). Doświadczenia autorów związane z realizacją projektu badawczego prowadzonego w skali międzynarodowej mogą stać się ważną wskazówką dla wszystkich tych, którzy zamierzają w przyszłości podejmować się rozpoznania funkcjonowania handlu detalicznego w Europie lub w jej wybranych krajach.

Retail trade is an important and interesting area of research in various European countries. The aim of the article is to present the scope of research that can be taken on a local, national and international scale. The article also presents the main findings resulting from conducting research regarding the functioning of retail trade in Europe. The study used both secondary sources of information (international statistics, foreign research reports, press resources) and primary sources (survey, experts’ opinion research). The experience of the authors associated with the conducting the research project on an international scale may become an important guide for all those who intend in the future to make a diagnosis of the functioning of retailing in Europe or its selected countries.
