Until recently, honorary plaques were rarely the subject of studies by Polish historians. Only in recent years have studies been published discussing their nature and purpose. Unfortunately, due to their previous neglect, including by local authorities, many of these valuable objects were removed from their original place of exhibition, and some were even destroyed. One such plaque, requiring restoration, is from Reszel, commemorating soldiers from the local Roman Catholic parish who fell in the battles with Napoleon in the years 1813–1815. Before the Second World War this plaque was located outside the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, which could be dated to the refurnishing of its interior in 1822–1843. The table’s inscriptional field contains permanent and temporary elements. The former includes inscriptions with the names of fallen soldiers and their place of their origin. The second includes military ranks, names, places and dates of death, dates of birth, decorations received and others. The correct reading of these inscriptions – often written in the form of abbreviations – as well as their verification led to numerous findings, including those relating to units under whose banners fought soldiers from Reszel parish in individual battles with Napoleon.

NAMES GIVEN IN THE TOWN PARISH OF RESZEL 1579–1604 In this work, a collection of given names from the region of Warmia is presented. The material used as a basis is the baptismal registry of the parish of Reszel covering the years 1579–1653. The article’s goal was to present the repertoire of names given in the years 1579–1605 in the parish of Reszel, as well as their frequency, and study as to whether the choice of names for children was influenced by the names of their parents and/or godparents, as well as any linguistic traits the excerpted names possessed. Among the names excerpted, 61 were masculine and 32 were feminine (not counting variants). Noteworthy is the fact that there are about half as many feminine names as masculine. The influence of the parents’ names on those of their children was small (7%); names of godparents played a somewhat larger role (13%). Among both masculine and feminine names, those beginning with consonants predominated. As for endings, no masculine names were noted that ended with vowels, whereas final vowels predominated among the feminine names.

The article regards a single episode from a longstanding competition for the Royal Progymnasium in Reszel between Warmian cities in the 19th century. The preserved archival materials allow for a more in-depth analysis of the efforts of Olsztyn in the years 1861–1861 to gain this secondary school. The city attempted to outbid Lidzbark Warmiński by declaring, among others, the purchase of the Olsztyn castle to serve the needs of the school. Its authorities expressed their preliminary interest in the offer; however, the negotiations lasted for months until Olsztyn authorities assured the completion of all requirements outlined by the provincial school college in Königsberg. Olsztyn’s offer was so compelling that the Ministry of Education initially agreed to translocate the school. Yet, Reszel authorities soon began their diplomatic offensive that convinced Berlin to leave the progymnasium in their city and transform it into a full-scale secondary school – a gymnasium. The efforts of Olsztyn authorities had, nevertheless, a significant influence over the final shape of the network of secondary schools in Warmia in the 19th century, although in the dynamically developing Olsztyn of that time such a school appeared as late as in 1970s. In the conclusions, the author additionally attests that there is a clear relationship in the way of thinking of the then elites between the offer of education above primary level and specific economic calculations; the possibility of gaining education in secondary schools was connected with perspectives of further development of the city. The efforts of the cities were the decisive factor in the rapid development of the network of Eastern Prussian secondary schools in the second half of 19th century

This paper aims to present the origin of German surnames to indicate whether they have variants, their origin, and whether the surnames under investigation could still be found in Warmia in the 18th century and the 20th century in the former province of Olsztyn. The research material comes from the Reszel Baptismal Register Number E 462 = Rössel, Taufregister: MAI 1579-1653, kept in the Archive of the Warmian Archdiocese in Olsztyn. The majority of the examined appellations are names with a single motivation. These surnames are mainly derived from place names, from names of professions and from first names. Ten surnames have variants (alternatives). The surnames Arend (4) and Berndt (5) have the largest number of alternatives. The reasons for the occurrence of variants of the examined surnames include: d → dt → t, s → ß change, Polonisation of surnames, doubling of vowels and consonants without justification, simplification of the consonant group, and the change of diphthongs. Ten of the examined surnames had ceased to exist by the 18th century, while only nine were found in the 20th century.

Odmianki (warianty) posiada 10 nazwisk. Najwięcej odmianek mają nazwiska Arend (4) i Berndt (5). Przyczynami występowania odmianek badanych nazwisk są m. in.: wymiana d → dt → t, s → ß, polonizacja nazwisk, podwajanie samogłosek i spółgłosek bez uzasadnienia, uproszczenie grupy spółgłoskowej, wymiana dyftongów.

Łączył on fizycznie, społecznie i duchowo dwa historyczne regiony, a zarazem państwa.
