The author presents the above problem in a multifaceted, especially political and scientific dimension. Subjects concerning Russia evoke emotions in Poland, which is natural because of close neighbourhood of the two countries as well as complex history of mutual relations. By way of example, the author mentions some most preposterous anti-Russian phobias and particularly, he indicates our complete ignorance of the history and modern times of our historically eastern neighbour. Contemporary Russia still surprises us, it remains almost completely unknown to Polish readership. Not many people have noticed that the 90th anniversary (celebrated in July 2008) of a brutal murder of the last Russian ruler along with his family, described in Russia as one of the most tragic events in their history, contributed to a great journalistic debate on the possibility of restoration of the monarchy in that country. The issue is precisely described by the author who considers reality of such a system metamorphosis. In the present article, research needs in this area are compared with a current state of research on Russia and eastern politics in Olsztyn community, considering its potential and personnel.

The 100th anniversary of creation of the quazi parliament in the form of the State Duma as the Lower Chamber and in general reorganized State Council as the Upper Chamber takes place in 2006 and is of great interest not only historians but also of the specialists in study of literature, as they watch and research the social changes in the Russian state organization and can’t stand paying attention to the influence of this event on the political consciousness of the Russians of the first decade of the XXth century which was consolidated in a lot of works, also works of literature. The subject of the article is to show the attitude to that event of the Polish society, especially of the Poles from the Polish Kingdom, which was under the Russian reign in those times. The author represents this attitude through the utterances of the most influential people of the Polish public opinion, such as: Bolesław Prus, Jozef Piłsudski, Wladysław Studnicki, Tadeusz Grużewski, Hipolit Korwin-Milewski, Konstanty Skirmunt and gen. Jan Jacyna, also the utterances of the leading figures of ND, PPS and the editors of the popular „Kurier Warszawski”.A conclusion, to which the author comes on the basis of this discourse, is the following: inPolish opinion, in the majority of cases the skepticism prevailed, which regarded the reformatory possibilities of the Duma and also the attitude to the new system in Russia, which replaced the former autocratic tsarist absolutism in 1906, as a system, which, despite all its limitations, nevertheless was constitutional, and of Russia itself, as a monarchy, already representative.

The paper explores the publishing legacy of the „Reduta” Eastern Institute (Instytut Wschodni), which first functioned under the name Near and Middle Eastern Institute. this was an academic and editorial institution, established in 1946 by Polish refugees during the course of their wartime and post-war wandering. It initially functioned in the Near East, and, at the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s, it moved to Great Britain. It had its permanent headquarters in London. e author discusses magazines and selected books published by „Reduta” in the first phase of its existence up to the early 1950s. He emphasises the significance of the Institute’s publications dedicated to history and to contemporary issues related to countries of the Near and Middle East and Russia. He mentions the role played by „Reduta” in the lives of Poles from the so-called „Independence Emigration” of the rst half of the 20th century, living in Britain.

This study describes the roots and traditions of Czech historical Russian studies research that focused on the history of tsarist Russia, which means up to 1917. Through analysis of personalities and their work, it draws attention to subjects that were studied and to the methodologies they used. Its goal is to highlight the positive traditions which contemporary research into the tsarist Russian past ought to or at least could follow up upon. At the same time, it takes notice of the necessity of pursuing new, hitherto little studied subjects, or those that have not been studied at all, which are of course indispensable for a complex, modern knowledge of the history of this region. The study is conceived as an overview with sections that provide insight into the works of representatives of individual stages of Czech historical-Russian studies research. It achieves its aims through the method of historical analyses and an accompanying comparative synthesis with elements of painstaking case studies.

Izhorians: A disappearing ethnic group indigenous to the Leningrad regionThere is no body of research focusing specifically on Izhorians, a Finno-Ugrian minority group indigenous to the Leningrad region. Information about them is usually embedded in wider studies investigating Finnic minorities living at the intersection of Russia, Estonia and Finland. Consequently, it is fragmented, disjointed and marginalised, and available almost only in Russian, Estonian or Finnish. However, the most recent report on the state of the Izhorian language (which is part of a general study of Finnic minority languages in Russia) is available in English. Even though information about Izhorians lacks unity and cohesion, all researchers share the same concern, namely that Izhorians are disappearing as a distinct ethnic group. This concern manifests itself as a tendency to follow the dynamics of the Izhorian population, paying special attention to statistical data. Accordingly, this paper begins with a presentation of those data as a feature that connects all available research and proceeds to a commentary clarifying the reasons for the decline of this ethnic group. It also evaluates the current state of the Izhorian language. This review article presents a concise overview of selected research findings related to various issues concerning the study of Izhorians, including works by A. I. Kir′ianen, A. V. Labudin and A. A. Samodurov (2017); A. I. Kir′ianen (2016); N. Kuznetsova, E. Markus and M. Muslimov (2015); M. Muslimov (2005); A. P. Chush′′ialova (2010); F. I. Rozhanskiĭ and E. B. Markus (2013); and V. I. Mirenkov (2000). Zawiera też zwięzły przegląd wyników wybranych badań dotyczących Iżorów i omawia prace takich autorów jak: A. I. Kir′ianen, A. V. Labudin i A. A. Samodurov (2017); A. I. Kir′ianen (2016); N. Kuznetsova, E. Markus i M. Muslimov (2015); M. Muslimov (2005); A. P. Chush′′ialova (2010); F. I. Rozhanskiĭ i E. B. Markus (2013); V. I. Mirenkov (2000).
