This paper deals with the lexical material excerpted from Słownik staropolski (Old Polish Dictionary). The author analyzes words with the main morpheme -sól-//-sol-, as well as multiple-root forms, which are connected with salt mining, production and trade in terms of meaning. The collected vocabulary belongs to eight word groups: 1. names of the object of activity – salt and its varieties; 2. names of places – salt depots; 3. names of people who perform the activity – those who mine and produce salt, as well as those who trade in salt; 4. names of salt offices; 5. names of vessels and devices used for salt production; 6. names of taxes and payments made with salt; 7. names of salt measures; 8. other chosen names connected with salt trade. The presented lexicon constitutes interesting material useful in further studies on salt vocabulary.

The author presents a scientific methodology of a linguist – historian who works on vocabulary of the oldest, manuscript era of Polish language. Here are some examples of problems that need to be addressed by the author of the dictionary headword and attempts to solve them. The author argues that it is only on the basis of Old Polish dictionary that further research on Old Polish language can be based.

Artykuł jest informacją o wykonywanym w latach 20092012 w Instytucie Języka Polskiego PAN pod kierownictwem Ewy Deptuchowej projekcie grantowym pt. Skarbnica leksyki staropolskiej. Uczestnicy projektu, L. Szelachowska–Winiarzowa, Z. Wanicowa, F. Wysocka, W. Twardzik i M. Frodyma zajmowali się opracowaniem wybranych kategorii semantycznych (słownictwo przyrodnicze, prawne, religijne) i funkcji składniowych wyrazów synsemantycznych oraz odczytaniem kontekstów z rękopisów łacińskich zawierających polskie glosy. Po przedstawieniu przez E. Deptuchową informacji na temat założeń i celu projektu oraz zasad jego realizacji i wyników poszczególni uczestnicy omawiają najważniejsze problemy wykonywanego zadania. M. Frodyma przedstawia wyrazy z zakresu religii i teologii, które zostały zanotowane po raz pierwszy lub są znane ze Słownika staropolskiego, ich nowe warianty fonetyczne czy nowe formy fleksyjne, znaczenia, frazeologizmy i poświadczenia starsze od zarejestrowanych w Słowniku. L. Szelachowska–Winiarzowa, zajmująca się nazwami przyrodniczymi, opisuje drogę dochodzenia do ustalenia właściwej postaci hasła i znaczenia kilku spośród wielu wyrazów. Z. Wanicowa przybliża metodę opracowywania materiału z zakresu słownictwa prawnego, podkreślając dużą liczbę hapaksów i zapożyczeń, zwłaszcza z języka niemieckiego. F. Wysocka pisze o trudnościach w pracy paleografa i znaczeniu właściwego odczytania polskich glos w łacińskich rękopisach. Niektóre z przedstawianych przez wykonawców przykłady zostały zilustrowane fotografiami rękopisów.

The paper provides information about the grant project titled “Treasury of the Old Polish Lexis” directed by Ewa Deptuchowa in the Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences in years 2009-2012. Contractors in the project: L. Szelachowska-Winiarzowa, Z. Wanicowa, F. Wysocka, W. Twardzik i M. Frodyma worked on selected semantic categories (natural sciences, legal, religious vocabulary) and on syntactical function of synsemantic words and on interpretations of contexts from Latin manuscripts that include Polish glosses. After presentation of goals of the project, of the methodology of their accomplishment and of the results by Ewa Deptuchowa, individual participants provide descriptions of major issues in the realized project tasks. M. Frodyma presents words in the field of religion and theology, which were noted for the first time and those that were known from the Old Polish Dictionary, but were characterized by new phonetical variants or new inflexion forms, meanings, idioms and proofs older from registered in the Old Polish Dictionary. L. Szelachowska-Winiarzowa, who is specializing in natural sciences names, describes the methodology to establish correct forms of dictionary articles and meanings of several among many words. Z. Wanicowa introduces the methodology of working on the material in the field of legal language, highlighting a large number of hapax legomena and borrowings, especially from German. F. Wysocka writes about the difficulties of the work of a palaeographist and meanings of the correct interpretation of Polish glosses in Latin manuscripts. Some of the presented examples have been illustrated with photographs of the manuscripts.

In the canon of the sources of the “Old Polish Dictionary” four types of studies on manuscripts with Polish glosses can be identified: (1) complete editions of texts with of highlighted Polish glosses, (2) thematic studies with excerpts from glossed texts, (3) editions of the “Polish glosses in ...” type containing fragments of Latin texts as contexts for the glosses and (4) library catalogs of manuscripts with lists of notes and Polish glosses without contexts. The article discusses how these editions were used in the “Old Polish Dictionary” and its “Supplement part I”. Analyzing Latin contexts, the authors of dictionary entries verified and supplemented readings given in these editions. The article shows how traces of such changes can be found in dictionary entries and explains how to interpret these inscriptions. Particular attention was paid to the “Catalogue of Latin Medieval Manuscripts of the Jagiellonian Library”, which served the “Old Polish Dictionary” editors as an indication which cards of the Latin manuscripts in the library collection they should excerpt Polish words from. Finally it is proposed, how to solve the problem of filling the material illustration of the “Old Polish Dictionary” in its planned electronic version with new, previously unnoticed or misread glosses, so that the information does not undergo further dispersion.
