The article sheds light on the expedition to Arabia undertaken by Kajetan Burski, equerry to Duke Hieronim Sanguszko. The expedition is cited in all the studies of both Polish relationships with the Middle East and the history of breeding pure Arab horses in Poland; unfortunately, what was known so far on the matter, which was a few basic facts only, was out of proportion to the importance assigned to this episode in the literature. The situation can be amended thanks to the research in the archives of the Sanguszko family (now kept in the State Archives in Cracow). First, it has been established beyond doubt that the Duke's equerry travelled to the East in the years 1803-1804. Secondly, his route has been retraced. Burski went from Istanbul to Syria; he took the horses purchased there to Istanbul overland; then he sailed to Odessa, from where he set out for Volhynia.
