Artykuł zawiera przegląd koncepcji „ja” pod względem rozumienia integracji struktury „ja” oraz jej znaczenia w życiu człowieka. Przegląd rozpoczyna się od koncepcji Jamesa, poprzez koncepcje psychoanalityczne, teorie cech i podejście fenomenologiczne, kończąc na teoriach społeczno-poznawczych. W drugiej części artykułu przedstawiono dwie współczesne miary integracji struktury „ja” i ich związki z przystosowaniem. Pierwszą z nich jest miara zróżnicowania struktury „ja” (SCD), opracowana przez Donahue. Miara ta wskazuje na ogromne zróżnicowanie i wielorakość struktury „ja”, a badania pokazały, że wysokie zróżnicowanie (duże zróżnicowanie cech wokół różnych ról społecznych) wiąże się z brakiem spójności i integracji struktury „ja” oraz z mniejszym przystosowaniem. Drugą miarą struktury „ja” jest phi-Showers, odzwierciedlające ewaluatywną organizację „ja”, która może być przedziałowa lub zintegrowana. Prezentowane badania sugerują, że przedziałowa organizacja struktury „ja”, chociaż jest związana z wyższą samooceną, może być niestabilna. Przeciwnie, zintegrowana struktura „ja” wiąże się z większą stabilnością, odpornością i radzeniem sobie ze stresem. Przegląd teorii i badań wskazuje na istotną zależność między integracją struktury „ja” a przystosowaniem.

The article presents a review of self-concept theories on understanding self-structure integration and its functions in human life. The review starts with James’ theory, discusses psychoanalytic theories, traits theories, and fi nally addresses the phenomenological approach to social-cognitive theories. In the second part of the article, two modern measures of self-structure integration are presented. The fi rst one, the Self-Concept Differentiation (SCD) measure was developed and studied by Donahue. The SCD approach provided a slightly varying view of self-concept, arguing that a higher differentiation (a greater variability of one’s attributes across different social roles) refers to the lack of coherence and integration and is associated with lower adjustment. The other measure of self-structure addressed in the paper is the phi-Showers – reflecting evaluative organization of the self which can be compartmentalized or integrative. The research and findings suggest that compartmentalized self-structures, typically associated with the highest levels of self-esteem, may be vulnerable to instability. In contrast, the more moderate self-views of individuals with integrative self-structures may offer greater stability, increased resilience, and a means of coping with extreme stress. The review of theories and research shows a signifi cant dependence between integration of self-structure and adjustment.
