This paper addresses the question of the role of associations of a civic character in the development of the residential areas. In the first section the author focuses on defining the concept of an association as a social group and a non-profit association. From differing approaches (legal, social sciences) particular typological divisions of non-profit associations ensue. A specific section is devoted to the theoretical premises for examining the functions of civic organisations in society. The paper identifies the role of associations in the residential milieu on the basis of empirical research in the village of Lozorno in the district of Malacky. It determines the condition of associations by comparing official registers with the identification of the associations from the viewpoint of members of the local community. The community considers 20 organisations as active. The specificity of Lozorno, as compared to the surrounding communities, is expressed not only by the activities of a large number of associations but also by continuity of the activity of associations from the pre-1989 period. Important determinants of the existence of associations include the performance of leaders, people’s interest in membership of associations, and the support of bodies in the local entrepreneurial sphere and public administration, which results from the personal approach as well as from a favourable socio-economic condition of the bodies in question. The associations are evaluated according to the level of activity and the area of involvement in which they perform a local development function. Taking the example of the Community Centre civic association, the paper illustrates in more detail its particular functions relating to the aims of its activity, as well as its social functions of a more general character.

An outlook on the, until now, almost unresearched subject of the Czech and French music links between the two World Wars, reveals many levels of their unusual richness. Endorsment of the French Revolution ideals, the Francophile Bohemian nobility of the 19th century, as well as the following political orientation towards France in the war and post-war periods, influenced in a decisive way many types of arts. Links between the two cultures broadened in the fields of the arts, literature, drama as well as music (Manes). The Parisian colonies of Czech artists (Martinu, Kupka, Sima, and others) and their contacts, became a source of rich connections between the individua artistic trends. In the process of reception of Czech music in France the local 'societes de concert' played an important role, orientated towards the development of contemporary chamber music, with interest in foreign composers. Of decisive importance here was the Societe 'Triton', also in connection of the radio broadcasts of its concerts. The chronological list of the concerts of Czech music in Paris between the two wars represents an important source for future research of this subject.

The present paper is the summary of a book which is about to be published. In this book, the authors at first introduce a model based on structural mathematics, which is suitable to describe and analyse the basic laws of both the living and non-living nature. They prove that there are irreconcilable limitations to classic mathematical tools suitable for discovering and describing the non-living world, when they are attempting the description of the phenomena of living nature, especially societies. The authors state that the complex, so called multistructural systems (it is equivalent the living systems) cannot be described and understood by quantitative, metric mathematics, only through the new tools offered by structural mathematics. By using their theoretical methods (so called Structure-difference Effect), they arrived to the formulation of the General Structure-conservation Theorem. Based on which they managed to apply the terminology of non-living nature: matter, motion, space, time, equilibrium, etc. to the structure-space related to societies. This opens up opportunities to work out a social theory proven in an exact manner, which will be described in the second part of the volume. However, this will be the topic of an article to be published later.
