The article is dedicated to giallo politico: political thrillers made in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s. In her analyses (Francesco Rosi’s Illustrous corpses and Mattei Affair; Elio Petri’s Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion and Todo modo) Miller examines the genre, drawing attention to the differences between understanding the term giallo in Italy and English-speaking countries. Describing the characteristic features of criminal plots and stylistic patterns of giallo, Miller underlines the similarities between the genre itself and other phenomena (American film noir, French policier, etc.). In the conclusion, the socio-political impact of giallo has been discussed: political thrillers prove that popular cinema was regarded by Italian film directors as a weapon of their social and political involvement.
