The author deals with the latest development in art troupes of one of the most important Slovak theatre institutions, the State Theatre in Kosice. In the introduction he returns to the situation at the end of 1980s, when under the pressure of social releaf the leading posts, until then predominantly belonging to party members, were taken by open-minded theatrical artists whose artistic results were obvious. Between 80s and 90s a huge reconstruction and rebuilding of the State Theatre building took place. Although it resulted in a remarkable improvement with regard to space, in the time needed for the renovation artistic troupes had to function in alternative, not always satisfactory places. Then, as a result of the social post-revolution development, personnel changes occurred in 1989 leading, mainly in the drama troupe, to the departure of some prominent artistic individuals which led into a strong suppression of creative endeavours. A decision to establish the Eastern Slovak State Theatre, taken by the Minister of Culture, by joining individually performing theatres in Presov and Kosice into a four-troupe entity subsidized by central budget was a positive turnover. Stefan Fejko returned to Kosice to work in the position of the general director. The artistic head of drama Milan Antol brought with him his workmate - a theatrical experimenter Peter Scherhaufer together with his students. In ballet an opportunity was given to a young female stage director and choreographer Dana Dinková, two musicals were directed by Jozef Bednárik. These artistic results did not convince the opponents of administrative reorganization advantages, and after elections in 1998 a re-division of the Eastern Slovak State Theatre into two individual subjects and a subsequent decentralization took place. As was proven later, the regional administration did not dispose of sufficient financial sources able to subsidize costly opera and ballet productions and so after a certain period of time the State Theatre in Kosice was taken up by the Ministry of Culture once again. Peter Himic - the theatre director since 1999 - has invited many outstanding personalities for cooperation. Roman Polák, Ondrej Soth and Zuzana Lacková were presenting the State Theatre drama, ballet and opera as artistic entities open to a modern theatrical form and their successors today are willing to make a dynamic and modern theatrical art in the east of Slovakia.
