The article deals with the approaches to sustainable development modelling on regional and macroeconomic levels. Much of the attention is paid to the weak and strong sustainability. The pollution-income relationships are analyzed in the article. The approaches to economic efficiency of ecological events are analyzed.
The work is focused on peculiarities of the influence of innovation orientation of the socio-economic systems development on the environment. Potentially positive and negative results of innovative changes are considered in the context of strong and weak sustainability concepts. Also empirical examples are provided and analyzed with sustainable development indicators of European countries being influenced by the intellectual component of the corresponding socio-economic systems.
