The idea of sustainable tourism was formed parallel to sustainable development – World Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Formulation of the concept of sustainable tourism took place at World Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Lanzarote (1995). Development of sustainable tourism should have three aims: economic, ecological and social ones.Other conditions of sustainable tourism development in Sweden: high ecological awareness of the society, tourist information; environment-friendly transport infrastructure; ecolabelling of products and services; environment-friendly restaurant and accommodation services.The term ‘SPA’ is of Latin origin – sanus per aquam health through water). Spa centres take considerable advantage of scientific achievements in physiotherapy and spa medicine. Ronneby Brunn Hotell, is an example of SPA hotel in Sweden. Ronneby Brunn Hotell fulfills outside conditions of the SPA ecohotel, it is located in a beautiful park, which holds the first position in Sweden as far as ecological factors are concerned. Ronneby Brunn Hotell also fulfills inside conditions of SPA. There is the most modern SPA centre in Sweden offering a wide range of services, including swimming pools, saunas, fitness centre, Jacuzzi, yoga room, beauty treatments and aesthetic medicine procedures.

Tourism has become one of the most popular leisure activities and the number of tourists has increased remarkably in recent years. UNWTO forecast further development of this sector, predicting that the number of in international arrivals will reach nearly 1.6 billion by the year 2020. Growth in the number of tourists poses serious threat to the environment. The way to solve this problem is introducing more sustainable approach into this sector. The concept of sustainability was recently introduced into tourism and we can already notice many good practices. The article focuses on presenting the concept of sustainable tourism, its key objectives and main characteristics, cases of its application, challenges connected with more sustainable approach to tourism. Sustainable tourism is presented as the solution for environmental and social problems caused by intensified touristic activity.

This paper analyses the existing scientific and methodological approaches to the defining of the term “ecotourism”. Comparative table which sets out the main objectives and functions of each of the interpretations of the authors was formed. The article further develops scientific approaches to the defining of ecotourism functions that are consistent with its objectives and principles. It was proposed to allocate cognitive, saving and motivating functions of ecotourism. We found that in the legislation of Ukraine the content of the terms “ecotourism” and “green tourism” is identified. We analysed the related categories to “ecotourism”, such as: “green tourism”, “agritourism” and “sustainable tourism” and found that ecotourism is part of sustainable tourism that promotes sustainable development and agrotourism – part of rural tourism.
