Jan Marcin Szancer (1902-1973) is ranked among the classics of Poland's book design. His illustrations - distinctive and very popular - decorated over 200 books and received numerous prestigious awards. Szancer's identifiable 'line', sophisticated colours, composition of decorative patterns and detail-oriented imagery comprises of his unique style, his visual 'handwriting' independent from any trends in art and affected by no 'isms'. The signature of 'JMS', like the logo of known and respected trademark, is mostly associated with book illustration. However, Szancer's artistic interests were broader and included wider graphical areas, as well as stage and set design. This article makes the reader aware of the artist's long and extensive collaboration with Polish film, and of his work with a budding TV network.
