From the rich theological problems of the renewed liturgy of the rites related to the Sacrament of the Sick — especially from the theological and pastoral introduction, biblical readings and euchological texts — the Author largely discusses only the basic ones. It concerns: Christological and paschal dimension of the Sacrament of the Sick; the strengthening role of the Holy Spirit in the life of sick person; ecclesial dimension of this sacrament. The author outlines briefly such elements like: the penitential dimension of the Sacrament of the Sick; the meaning of the sickness in the theological approach; the need for the introduction of the extraordinary minister (for example permanent deacon); the problem of distribution of the sacrament not only to those who suffer physically but also mentally (deep depression); the need of inclusion into the ritual a notion concerning the situation of dying person — present texts speak about the healing and avoid the references to the end of the earthly life obscuring the fear of the dying person (it means there are no elements of Christian Eastern hope).

Z bogatego zakresu problematyki teologicznej nowej liturgii obrzędów sakramentu namaszczenia chorych, zwłaszcza zawartej we wprowadzeniu teologiczno-pastoralnym, w czytaniach biblijnych i tekstach euchologijnych, autor szerzej omawia jedynie zagadnienia podstawowe. Należą do nich: wymiar chrystologiczny i paschalny sakramentu namaszczenia chorych; umacniająca rola Ducha Świętego w życiu chorego; wymiar eklezjalny tego sakramentu. W sposób skrótowy zasygnalizowano jeszcze takie zagadnienia teologiczno-pastoralne, jak: wymiar pokutny sakramentu namaszczenia; sens choroby w ujęciu teologicznym; potrzeba wprowadzenia nadzwyczajnego szafarza (np. diakona stałego); problem udzielania tego sakramentu osobom chorym nie tylko somatycznie, ale i psychicznie (np. w chwili ciężkiej depresji), a także uwzględnienie w obrzędzie stanu człowieka umierającego, gdyż teksty mówią o uzdrowieniu, natomiast unikają odniesień do końca życia i tłumią lęk osoby umierającej (brak akcentów chrześcijańskiej nadziei paschalnej).

The understanding and celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick have experienced several changes through the ages. On of the results of that state was the limitation of its use only to the dying people. Therefore the reform undertaken after the Second Vatican Council pointed at the need of the restoration of the ancient practice to give the sacrament also to the sick people. This study concerns the phase of redaction of the new Ritual of the Sacrament of the Sick. The author discusses one by one the questions on theology, sacramental form and matter, subject and administrator of the Sacrament.

Zarówno obradom soborowym, jak też redakcyjnym pracom nad nowymi obrzędami sakramentu namaszczenia chorych przyświecał in genere jeden zasadniczy cel: przywrócić ten sakrament jego „historycznie” prawowitemu „właścicielowi”, czyli człowiekowi poważnie choremu, a nie jak dotąd, wyłącznie umierającemu. Powyższe, kategoryczne stwierdzenie z pewnością zostanie wzmocnione dwiema kolejnymi prelekcjami sympozjum: ukazaniem jego teologicznego sensu oraz potrzebą reorientacji dotychczasowej pragmatyki pastoralnej odnośnie do tego sakramentu.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie sakramentu namaszczenia chorych w odniesieniu do osób w podeszłym wieku. Sakrament, tak często mylnie kojarzony przez wiernych jedynie z momentem umierania, staje się wyrazem bezsilności wobec śmierci i ostatnim akordem chrześcijańskiego życia. Tymczasem, w świetle doktrynalnych wypowiedzi Magisterium Kościoła, namaszczenie nie musi być aplikowane osobom umierającym, a jego przyjęcie nie jest wyznacznikiem kresu życia. Namaszczenie jest sakramentem dla ludzi chorych i tych, którzy przeżywają swoją starość, a jego łaska może pomagać w znoszeniu choroby i uciążliwości wieku podeszłego. Bycie osobą starszą uprawnia do przyjmowania sakramentu, chociaż, jak pokazuje praktyka duszpasterska, możliwość ta nie w pełni jest wykorzystywana. W pierwszej części autor przedstawia historyczno-doktrynalne ujęcie podmiotu sakramentu namaszczenia: począwszy od zamieszczonego w Liście św. Jakuba nakazu namaszczania chorych, poprzez okres średniowiecza, dokonania soboru trydenckiego, po najnowsze nauczanie Magisterium. Następnie, w oparciu o Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego, zostaje przedstawiona analiza sakramentu namaszczenia z perspektywy charytologicznej. Łaska sakramentu namaszczenia udzielanego osobom w podeszłym wieku może mieć wiele wymiarów, przede wszystkim pozwala na przeżywanie własnej starości w odniesieniu do sfery „sacrum”. Po tych rozważaniach autor ukazuje namaszczenie w aspekcie wsparcia osób starszych w odniesieniu do dwóch istotnych problemów związanych z „trzecim wiekiem”. Są to problemy społeczne oraz psychologiczne. Sakramentalna łaska może być wsparciem w zmaganiu się z nimi.

The aim of the article is to present the Sacrament of the Sick in the context of its recipients, who include elderly people. The Sacrament is often mistakenly associated by the faithful with the moment of death, becoming an expression of powerlessness against death and the last event of one’s Christian life. In view of the doctrinal statements of the Church Magisterium however, the Anointing of the Sick does not necessarily have to be applied to the dying and its reception does not mean the termination of life. The anointment is the sacrament designed for the sick and for those who painfully experience their old age, and its grace may assist in suffering an illness or various impairments of old age. Being an elderly person makes one eligible to receive the sacrament, although pastoral experience shows that this possibility is not taken advantage of to the full extent. The first part of the article presents historical and doctrinal approaches to the Sacrament of the Sick: starting with the obligation to anoint the sick found in the Letter of Saint James, through the Middle Ages, the accomplishments of the Synod Of Trent, up to the latest teachings of the Magisterium. Subsequently, on the basis of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the analysis of the Sacrament of the Sick is made from the charitological perspective. The grace of the sacrament of anointment given to elderly people can have many dimensions and can provide them with an opportunity to experience their old age in relation to the sphere of “sacrum”. After this analysis the article shows the anointing in terms of providing support to elderly people in relation to two essential problems connected with “the third age”, i.e. social and psychological problems. Sacramental grace may provide support to cope with them.
