Usually we are ashamed to touch the issue of eroticism, although it is a quite natural one and, in fact, very close to us. It seems that roots of this shyness date back to the biblical paradise and to the original sin committed by the first people. Since the exile from paradise the erotic sphere is a kind of taboo that we are afraid to invade. Bataille measures wits with this problem very courageously, showing that eroticism played a key role in the pagan religions. With a help of eroticism it was possible to make a transgression (exceed ban), reach sacrum and thereby fully experience the existence. Then Christianity distanced to eroticism and, paradoxically, by associating it with unclean sacrum, permanently closed it within the limits of profanum. Eroticism is however a powerful force with multiple effects, which should not be reduced to a purely sexual experience. Also in Christianity love for God reveals his ecstatic capacity, which can be seen even on the example of the mystical visions of Saint Teresa of Ávila. Looking from this perspective, the positive qualities of a pagan religious eroticism can be better understood and valued. Especially eleusinian mysteries that are associated with a cult of the goddess Demeter seem to be spiritually close to the Christian cults. Whereas in the first case we have a profund love of Mother and Daughter, in the other one a love of Father and Son. The two religions have similar characteristics of a care for moral purity and for a faith in the eternal life. Therefore, in some aspects, they complement each other. Also the similarity of religious symbols that are present in both religions is surprising.

According to various theories of religion human beings are in a specific relationship with the Absolute. A human being feels a glorious power standing in front of him. And the answer to this relationship is the adoration of God, not to es-cape, which is normal with physical fear. The Absolute is the most sacred, holy and transcendent being. The Absolute’s existence is surrounded by sacred space and sa-cred time which we call – sacrum. How to understand sanctity? There are two ways – a kind of understanding called mythos which can be compared with mythical way of exploring sacred space and the second way of understanding called logos, which is a logical view of the world. Both ways should be complementary to lead every human being straight to the truth about God. Christian theology adds that the real sanctity materialized when people start to love God and each other. Love itself is a real name of God and the real sacrum in the world and in a human's heart.

A man is confronted today with many threats to his development, especially the spiritual one. The process of dechristianization, manifesting itself in varied forms, points at the activity of the social agents who work purposefully for the excluding of sacrum from the public life: political, economical and cultural. The objective of such planned process is to dilute the Christian values, propagate the ideology of laicization and build up the secularized society. The author of this article thought it greatly desirable to reflect broadly on the picture of the contemporary world and to unmask its true face which is very secularized. There is also an urgent need to reach the deepest contents of the new evangelization – strongly accentuated by the popes: blessed John Paul II and especially Benedict XVI – and to ask about the possibilities of its realization to renew the contemporary world in which we happen to live, work and develop as Christ’s disciples.
