The paper attempts to discuss the Silesian ethnolect from two different points of view. The first one is determined by the current status of research, including above all the identifiable areas of shortcomings in the field. The other goes beyond the Polish perspective that prevails in the Silesian studies discourse. The author discusses the progress of work on a Silesian language corpus, interactive research into Slavic languages in the context of intercomprehension, as well as the matched-guise technique, potentially making it possible to assess the perception of the Silesian ethnolect in the area where it is present. The re-search scopes indicated are considered to be of key importance in the context of the description of the condition and status of the ethnolect.

Despite the numerous attempts made in the 21st century at gaining linguistic independence, the Silesian ethnolect still enjoys the official status of a dialect. Lack of success in the attempted emancipation should be attributed to the linguistic policy adopted by the Polish authorities and political elites. The attempts at emancipation of the language spoken in Silesia have been subjected to criticism on many levels of the social discourse including the academic level. However, a detailed analysis of the presented arguments is evidence that there are no objective, linguistic premises that questioning promotion of the Silesian ethnolect to the status of a regional language is unsubstantiated.

This article is devoted to the formation of syntax norms in written variation of the Silesian dialect. The basis of reference is constituted of the so-called New Silesian Literature, which for a few years has been created by a circle of writers associated with ideas of the linguistic emancipation of Silesians. The syntax norm of written variation makes reference to dialect syntax. This in turn has been very little analyzesd. The author offers comparative research of the former with Polish syntax to enable abstraction of similarities and contrasts. The analytical part of the article discusses the phenomena of verb phrases (compound nominal predicate and predicate with infinitive), prepositional constructions, so-called analytic genitive and non-accommodated constructions with particles such as ale, aby, ani.

The emancipation of the Silesian ethnolect in critical discourse: The legal and political plane, the socio-political plane and the personal one At the beginning of the 21st century, there were some attempts at making the Silesian ethnolect an independent variety and at elevating its status to the status of a regional language. Those attempts are part of greater linguistic emancipation processes occurring in present-day Europe. Despite the numerous attempts, the Silesian ethnolect still has the status of a dialect and therefore it is still deemed to be part of the Polish language. The failure of those emancipation attempts results from the opposition of the Polish national authorities, the political elites and the most influential scholarly circles. Questioning the attempts at making the Silesian language independent occurs on the legal and political plane, the socio-political plane, the scientific (linguistic) plane as well as on a personal one. The independent Silesian language is viewed as a threat to the Polish state and national unity. Additionally, it is also thought that its functioning could lead to the outburst of social conflicts in the country. Finally, the emancipation processes are repudiated because, as it is sometimes maintained, they are forced through by totally incompetent people. A detailed analysis of the argumentation shows that there are no objective, scientific foundations for questioning the attempts at elevating the status of the Silesian ethnolect to that of a regional language. The arguments put forward on the legal and political, socio-political and personal planes are, in the majority, easy to invalidate. They are based on scientifically unverifiable, ideologised foundations or on old-fashioned research methodologies. It seems that the emancipation of the Silesian ethnolect will be possible, provided that there is a proper political atmosphere in the country and provided that the Silesian people themselves systematically act for the benefit of elevating their speech to the status of a regional language.

For more than ten years the Silesian ethnolect has been rapidly developing. During this time, its polyvalence, the level of codification and the scope of its use have been radically expanded. This code is used by a relatively big number of speakers (530,000) who consider it a separate language and not a local dialect of Polish. The legal status of the Silesian ethnolect depends on the linguistic policy implemented in modern Poland. At present, however, there is no political will to elevate this code to the status of an independent language.

Ponašymu – the mixed language code of Těšín SilesiaThis article describes the development of the linguistic situation in the border region of Těšín Silesia throughout its history, with particular emphasis on the so-called ponašymu – a mixed language code used in the Czech part of the region. It is based on a random combination of forms of the traditional Těšín dialect with the standard Czech language and, to a lesser extent, elements borrowed from the Polish and Slovak languages and from neighbouring Moravian dialects. An important element of the study is the analysis of selected material collected by the author during fieldwork in August 2018.

The article presents initial findings from a research project that aims to investigate to what extent German loan words are still in use in Silesian today. Over the centuries, Silesian has adopted far more loan words from German than any other dialect on Polish territory. The project focuses on speakers of Silesian and analyses their so-called subjective frequency of usage of specific Silesian Germanisms in comparison with synonymous words in Standard Polish. Nearly 700 word pairs are tested. The estimates of usage frequency are correlated with the respondents’ sociodemographic data and their so-called language attitudes towards Silesian and its position in Silesian-Polish society. The question of how Germanisms are treated is a central issue in the current discussion on the codification of Silesian.
