As some scholars view inter-and intra-lingual translation as a parallel activity, it is vital to establish to what extent the products of these processes are alike, and whether the processes themselves differ. This paper investigates stylistic simplification, a frequently hypothesised translation universal which involves, among others, breaking up long sentences in the process of translation (Laviosa 2002). One of the parameters commonly used in the investigations of simplification in translations is the average sentence length. In the present study we focus on sentence length to see if the tendency to incorporate stylistic simplification is equally present in the products of inter-and intralingual translation; what phases of the translation process are decisive for sentence length; whether the scope of consultation with the source text affects sentence length. Finally, we will try to verify if average sentence length is dependent on the level of translation experience.

The interview was conducted during the Megatrends and Media 2018 – Reality and Media Bubbles conference organised by the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at the University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava in April 2018 as the professor was one of the main plenary speakers at the conference. The interview focuses on the language of new media, and the Internet in particular, and the use of technologies from the professor’s point of view. It deals with ongoing simplification and liberalisation trends in society and language as well as with the development within linguistics characterised by the shift from prescriptivism to descriptivism and their possible reflection in the new media and in education. It introduces the tendencies of intertextuality and informalisation that are typical for the language of the media today.

The tale is not just a linear, sober narrative, but a clever combination of a diegesis of a certain type, a network of images and an implicit philosophy. This is where it differs from both the short story and the fable. As a literary genre, it is less of a « simple form » (André Jolles) and more of a « simplex form » (Alain Berthoz). In this context, how to address the question of the simple style in the literary genre of the fairy tale – a genre which leans towards complexity and sophistication, more than simplicity? We will suggest that the literary ideal of simplicity advocated by Perrault, best exemplified in The Fairies, is constructed against the gallant aesthetic which was the source of French fairy tales.
