W oparciu o wyniki badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych na terenie Warmii i Mazur w latach 2004–2009, w artykule podjęto próbę identyfikacji najważniejszych czynników determinujących decyzje właścicieli mikro- i małych przedsiębiorstw, zarówno tych dotyczących rozpoczęcia własnej działalności gospodarczej, jak i mających wpływ na jej wyniki finansowe. Zwrócono m.in. uwagę na takie kwestie, jak: struktura źródeł finansowania przedsiębiorstw, znaczenie kapitału społecznego, cechy osobowościowe przedsiębiorców. Decyzje przedsiębiorców z Warmii i Mazur o powołaniu do życia pierwszej firmy wiążą się z uniwersalnymi bodajże (tj. w pewnym sensie ponadczasowymi i ponadregionalnymi) złożonymi dylematami trudnych wyborów. Nieomal zawsze brzemienne są one w sukces bądź klęskę, nastroje optymizmu lub pesymizmu, ryzyko i niepewność.

Based on data collected by means of empirical research in the voivodship of Warmia and Mazury in the period from 2004 till 2009 this paper attempts to identify the underlying motives or crucial decisions made by owners of small and very small enterprises, such as: what incited them in the first way to launch their own business, what decisions determined the financial business success. Under closer examination came the following factors: the structure of the firm’s financial sources, the firm’s assets and personality traits of the entrepreneurs. The Warmian and Mazurian entrepreneurs’ initial decisions to fond their first business can be ascribed to the universal (that means transtemporal and transregional) category of problematic complex choices. Without fail they imply simultaneously success and failure, the spirit of optimism and pessimism, risk and uncertainty.
