This article provides an introduction to the origin and development of the theology of indulgences in the Church against the background of the period of decline of the practice of public penance in ancient times and the beginning of a new penitential system in the Middle Ages which in substance is valid until now. The author discusses the theological dilemmas that arise as a consequence of transferring the obligation to do the set penances from the period before granting reconciliation (reconciliation with the Church), which was the ancient practice, to a time after the reconciliation, nowadays more often called absolution, as in the case of the penitential practice obligatory from the Middle Ages onward. Then, the basic penance structure was consolidated in order to grant absolution from sins and eternal punishment by a priest under the Church jurisdiction according to the sacramental mode. Absolution from temporal penalty for sin could also be obtained according to the jurisdiction by indulgences, thus not according to the sacramental mode.

Artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do powstania i rozwoju teologii odpustów w Kościele na tle okresu spadku praktyki publicznej pokuty w starożytności i początkach nowego systemu pokutnego w średniowieczu. W dzisiejszych czasach coraz częściej nazywanego rozgrzeszeniem.
The Trident Council made a huge contribution to catholic doctrine and canonical discipline in the realm of sacrament of marriage. The rst and foremost can be pointed out the confirmation of the indissolubility of marriage. The truth was formulated due to the arising of doubts about the doctrinal signi cance of it. The paper deals with the issue of proper interpretation of the canons about marriage given by the Council in question.

Great and necessary gift of reform and pastoral renewal drawn up by Council of Trent was ardently and fruitfully taken up by Bishop Stanisław Karnkowski, and it was applied with great impact on two diocesan synods, which were held in 1568 and 1579. Synods’ resolutions strongly embedded in council decrees and provincial statutes regulated many sectors of pastoral life of contemporary kujawsko-pomorska diocese, activating clergymen as well as engaging the secular faithful people religion-wise and moral-wise. is outstanding legislator, reformer, grown and formed in Tridentinum atmosphere, supporter of Trent’s renewal of the Church and its priesthood structures, realized that renewal of priesthood and repair of religious-moral life has to nd its beginning in the reform of clergy, keeping the church discipline as well as in the life and conduct of the clerical conformable with the spirits of vocation for the ministry. Also the eorts aiming at better organization of deaneries served for renewal of priesthood as well as revival of deaneries’ activity, amongst the other, within the range of priesthood control, reminding the rectors their duties within the range of getting to know their parishioners, taking care of the sick and poor people, dispositions referring to defending the catholic faith threatened by reformation, regulations referring to teaching the Truths of the Faith, catechistic teaching, performing and taking the sacraments, Gods’ cult and liturgical issues. All of those was to serve post-council re- newal of priesthood in Włocławek’s Church. Bishop Stanisław Karnkowski realized his programmed actions curing and reforming the priesthood in dioceses not only by synodal activity, but also he supported them by Exhortations and Admonitiones issued by him – liturgical agenda, which served unication of liturgy and were the help for clergymen, not only in kujawsko-pomorska diocese. Analysis of his legisla- tive and ministry activity allows us to state, that he built in the diocese new structures of religious, priesthood and church life on the base of program laid out by Coucil of Trent. Hence he belonged to the most eminent Polish bishops of catholic Church, defender of the faith, promoter of education, reformer of habits and manner of the priest and secular faithful, and rst of all as outstanding and experienced jurisprudent of synodal legislation in Poland and reformer of the priesthood.

Wielki i potrzebny dar reformy i odnowy duszpasterskiej nakreślony przez Sobór Trydencki został gorliwie i owocnie podjęty przez biskupa Stanisława Karnkowskiego i to z wielkim rozmachem na dwóch synodach diecezjalnych, odbytych w 1568 i 1579 r. Osadzone mocno w dekretach soborowych oraz statutach prowincjonalnych uchwały synodów normowały wiele sektorów życia duszpasterskiego ówczesnej diecezji kujawsko-pomorskiej, uaktywniając samych duszpasterzy, jak i angażując religijnie i moralnie wiernych świeckich. Ten wybitny ustawodawca, reformator, wyrosły i uformowany w atmosferze Tridentinum, zwolennik odnowy trydenckiej Kościoła i jego struktur duszpasterskich, zdawał sobie sprawę, że odnowa duszpasterstwa i naprawa życia religijno-moralnego musi znaleźć swój początek w reformie duchowieństwa, zachowaniu karności i dyscypliny kościelnej oraz w życiu i postępowaniu duchownych zgodnym z duchem powołania kapłańskiego. Odnowie duszpasterstwa służyły też podejmowane wysiłki zmierzające do usprawnienia organizacji dekanatów oraz ożywienie działalności dziekanów, m.in. w zakresie kontroli duszpasterstwa, przypominania proboszczom ich powinności w zakresie poznawania parafian, opieki nad chorymi i ubogimi, zarządzenia odnoszące się do obrony wiary katolickiej zagrożonej reformacją, regulacje odnoszące się do nauczania prawd wiary, nauczania katechetycznego, sprawowania i przyjmowania sakramentów, kultu Bożego i spraw liturgicznych. To wszystko miało służyć posoborowej odnowie duszpasterstwa w Kościele włocławskim. Stąd należał do najwybitniejszych biskupów polskich tamtego okresu.
Funkcjonował on szacunkowo w 70-80% parafii miejskich i około 30% parafii wiejskich.

Social care and charity in Poland, as well as in whole Christian Europe, was based mainly on hospitals, which – until the end of the 18th century – served as almshouses, where various categories of those in need found shelter: the handicapped, the old, the poor, the ill and orphans. In the first two centuries of the existence of the Polish state hospitals were run almost solely by monasteries, while since around the 14th century the so called prepositural hospitals appeared in larger cities. They consisted of an almshouse and a hospital church and they had their own benefice and clergy. In majority they still func-tioned in the Old Poland. At the end of the 16th century in the atmosphere and by virtue of reforms undertaken at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) small parish hospitals-asylums began to develop dynamically, both in urban parishes in which prepositural hospitals had not existed before and in rural areas, where hospitals in medieval times were unknown. A quick and systematic growth of the number of parish almshouses caused this type of hospitals to be statistically dominant, especially since the second half of the 17th century. Widespread development of parish hospitals in the Commonwealth and the thickening of their network progressed at a different pace in different regions. Generally, as far as the whole country goes, the peak development of hospitals falls at the second half of the 17th century. The greatest intensification of the process in the 17th centu-ry was a result of a gradual and continual process of the development of hospital network in answer to post-Trent recommendation to establish one in every parish. Development of hospitals in the 18th century. Only in the Eastern areas the devel-opment of hospitals started later, progressed more slowly and was prolonged in time. The reduction of the number of hospitals in most of the regions of the Crown, pro-gressing slowly but successively throughout the 18th century, was a harbinger of an irrevocable disappearance of church institutions of this kind. It prepared a ground for the development of a new kind of hospitals, whose unequivocally medical function began to crystalise in Poland in the partition era. In the whole area of pre-partition Commonwealth, in the peak moment of the development of hospitals, more or less every second Latin parish had its own care facility. Such facilities functioned approx-imately in 70-80% of urban parishes and in about 30% of rural ones.
The Carthusian Order established by St Bruno of Cologne (died 1101) in La Grande Chartreuse (Latin: Carthusia), France, belongs to communities that in their charisma combine cenobitic and eremitical life. The rule of the Order, called Consuetudines Cartusiae, was written by the fifth prior of the Chartreuse Guiges II (died about 1188) after St Bruno had already died. Due to the fact that the first monastic community was founded in the area of the Grenoble Diocese, Carthusians took over many liturgical customs known in Lyon. However, taking into consideration the unchanging specific character of the order, a liturgical autonomy going back to the Middle Ages has been preserved for centuries. The way in which the maxim about the invariability of the customs concerns the liturgy of the Holy Mass in the Carthusian Order after the Trent Council reform is an interesting issue. Learning about the Ordo Missae described in the Carthusian directories and recorded in the first edition of liturgical books binding in the order is the answer to this question. In 1582 a new Ordinarium Cartusiense was published in Paris, and in the same year a commission was established during the assembly of the General Chapter in order to do a revision of liturgical books on the basis of new books published after the Council of Trent. The first result was publishing a new collection of homilies for the officium divinum in 1585, and a new breviary in 1587. The amended missal was published in 1603 (Missale Cartusiani Ordinis). On the basis of the preserved sources, in comparison with the books of reform of the Roman books, as well as in comparison with later liturgical books, differences may be seen in celebrating the Eucharist in the Carthusian Order in the first period after the Council of Trent. The liturgical sources coming from the Carthusian Order allow knowing the way, in which the Holy Mass was celebrated. Showing the celebration of the Holy Mass described in the Carthusian Ordinarium of 1582 and presented in the first edition of the Carthusian missal after the Council of Trent, in 1603, is an interesting issue. A comparison of the texts with the Ordo Missae of the first post-Trent Roman Missal of 1570 allows showing similarities to and differences from the Roman liturgy of that time. The celebration of the Eucharist in the Carthusian Order was adjusted to the Carthusians’ severe, eremitical way of life. Differences may be noticed in the very structure of the liturgical texts as well as in the assumed postures and attitudes. It is interesting that the Carthusians started the celebration of the Eucharist on the Gospel side, and not in the middle of the altar. Prayers at the steps were much shorter than in the Roman liturgy. Differences may be also pointed to in the very texts of such prayers as Confiteor, Misereatur, or in the inverted order of the words in the hymn Gloria. Similarly simplified formulas occurred in the liturgy of the word. The differences also include the fact that the deacon only wore the stole at the time of reading the Gospel, and did it in a way that was different from the way in the Roman liturgy. It should also be stressed that a Carthusian celebrating the Holy Mass never knelt – also when he said the words of the origin – but only bowed and slightly bended his legs at the knees. There are also many differences during the offertory. Peculiarities include the fact that as soon as at the beginning of preparation of the gifts the celebrant washed his hands. In the Carthusian tradition also many prayers over the bread and wine did not occur; although they were said in the Roman liturgy. The celebrant only said the De latere Domini – when he poured water into the cup, and when he lifted up the Host and the cup he recited: In spiritu humilitatis… Also another test, the Orate fratres is transmitted by the Carthusian sources. The differences between the Carthusian tradition and the Roman one also includes holding stretched arms over the gifts during the reciting of the secreta. The Canon of the Mass is the center of the Eucharist; in its content it was nearly the same in the Carthusian as in the Roman liturgy. Mentioning, besides the name of the pope and the bishop, that of the king by the Carthusians, as well as the inverted order in the prayer Unde et memores, are also differences. The way the hands were put deserve special attention. When the rubrics said that the hands had to be spread, the celebrant put them in the shape of the cross, and when he took a deep bow in order to say the Supplices te rogamus, he crossed them on his breast. Some differences also occurred in the rites of the Holy Communion – the Carthusians said only one prayer, beginning with the words Domine Jesu Christe, and not two, like in the Roman liturgy, and many texts and verses were not said that had been recorded in the Roman liturgy in 1570. Also, before the Holy Communion the priest said Agnus Dei only once, and for a second and third time he did so after he had received Christ’s Body and Blood. The peculiarities also include the fact that at the end of the Holy Mass the celebrant never imparted a blessing. The celebration of the Holy Mass in the Carthusian Order in the period just after the reform of the Council of Trent echoed the liturgical traditions of the Middle Ages, known in the Lyon Diocese as early as the 10th and 11th centuries. Studying both the texts and a little different forms of celebration lets one see the Eucharist also as the center of contemplative life that was led in the order considered the strictest one in the Western Church.

Zakon kartuzów założony przez św. Brunona (zm. 1101) z Kolonii w La Grande Chartreuse we Francji (łac. (Missale Cartusiani Ordinis). Celebrans odmawiał tylko De latere Domini – podczas wlewania wody do kielicha, a unosząc razem Hostię i kielich recytował: In spiritu humilitatis... Także inny tekst Orate fratres przekazują źródła kartuskie. Do odrębności u kartuzów należy trzymanie rąk wyciągniętych nad darami w czasie odmawiania secrety. Celebracja Mszy św. w zakonie kartuzów, w dobie zaraz po reformie Soboru Trydenckiego, nawiązywała do tradycji liturgicznych średniowiecza, znanych w metropolii Lyońskiej w X i XI w.
Jednocześnie Eucharystia chroni przed grzechami ciężkimi, odpuszcza grzechy lekkie, umacnia wiarę, nadzieję i miłość, a jednocześnie pozwala zachować pobożność.

The Council of Trent undertook the task of presenting the doctrine of the Eucharist, especially in confrontation with the teaching of dissenters. This reflection was systematically included in the council decrees adopted at sessions in 1551 and 1562. At the pastoral level, this teaching, as an aid for priests, was included in the Roman Catechism, published in 1566. According to the teaching of the Council of Trent, catecheses were included in Polish agendas, which were to help the faithful not only understand the theological depth of the sacraments, but also had a parenetic character. An example are catecheses on the Eucharist on the agenda of Fr. Hieronim Powodowski. Biblical texts, both Old Testament images and New Testament events, were an important foundation in the Powodowski’s catecheses on the Eucharist. It is worth emphasizing the presentation of the Eucharist in the light of the whole history of salvation—from the creation of the world to the apogee in the mystery of Redemption. Christ’s call: “do this in remembrance of me” has been realized in the Church since the beginning of Christianity. This sacrament was seen as the source of all sacraments. The essential content of this approach is the fact that Christ is really present in the mystery of the Eucharist. Accepting this truth requires an attitude of faith in the real presence of Christ in Mass. It assumes an attitude of faith in transubstantiation, emphasizing the importance of the Eucharist as a sacrifice. Preparing the faithful to receive Holy Communion was a separate issue. Attention was drawn to the need for sacramental confession in the case of grave sins. At the same time, the Eucharist protects against grave sins, forgives venal sins, strengthens faith, hope and love, while maintaining piety. Therefore, humbleness and repentance were required, following the example of the Gospel centurion, and they were advised not to absentmindedly. A historical look at the mystery of the Eucharist will certainly contribute to the deepening of Eucharistic awareness among the faithful and will contribute to full, conscious and active participation in the Holy Mass.
The subject of this study is a book entitled Constitutiones Generalis Capituli Miechoviensis. The Author talks about the texts, which directly relate to different parts of the rite that in a direct way are connected to the liturgy and care for the beauty of that liturgy, consistent of the reforms made by the Council of Trent.

Obejmują one pełniących następujące oficja: przełożonego generalnego, kustosza skarbca, starszego i młodszego zakrystianina, kaznodziei i kantora.
Impedimentum clandestinitatis, i.e. requirement of introduction of the canonical form of marriage as obligatory for validity of matrimonial union is one of the milestones in the development of the matrimonial Church discipline. Responding to the needs of the Church and of the lay society, the Council of Trent recognized that first of all the Church is competent to introduce the matrimonial impediments and can require a defined public form of contracting the marriage, and at the same time defends the principle of consensus facit nuptias and still the spouses are ministers of the Sacrament of Matrimony. This article is an attempt to present the way in which the requirement of preservation of the canonical form at contracting the marriage was formed from the first centuries of Christianity until the Council of Trent.

According to Thomas Aquinas, the faithful can receive Holy Communion by sacramentally receiving the consecrated host and wine or by so-called spiritual communion. The latter kind of the Holy Communion is reserved for people who cannot receive the sacramental body and blood of Christ. In modern Catholic theology, the subject of spiritual communion was forgotten for many years. In the present article, spiritual communion is illustrated from the liturgical and piety perspective of the Middle Ages in the theology of Doctor Angelicus and in the context of the modern teaching of the popes. This article can inspire new theological and pastoral ways of looking at the liturgy and gift of the Eucharist.

The article indicates phenomenon of existence on some 16th century prints (and later ones, very commonly) stereotypical formula which confi rmed, that they were published with approbation of adequate authorities described as „elders” or „superiors”. Discussed phenomenon was connected with preventive censorship, specifi cally with infl uence of decisions of Council of Trent on books. 8th of April 1546, on the fourth session of the fi rst phase of Council of Trent referring to decisions of the earlier Council of Lateran (4th of May 1515) there were defi ned the rules printers should had obey. It was ordered that author’s name and name of the printing shop should be explicitly shown on the title page. Printing and selling books without examination by and approval of the bishop was forbidden under the punishment of anathema and fi ne, in a case of books written by monks additional approval by their superiors was obligatory. In Poland in the prints confi rming examining the book and indicating they did not contain any content against the faith (sometimes also against good habits) there appeared shortened formula Cum licentia Superiorum, Facultate Superiorum, Superiorum Permissu (with approbation or acceptance of the Elders). The process of even formal introduction of the Council (ended in December 1563) Acts’ went on very slowly. The King received the Book of Council Acts from nuncio on 7th of August 1564. In the period 1564-1568 the Trident Council’s decisions were introduced in three dioceses. The formula Cum Facultate Superiorum appeared in the year 1576 r. on the (fi rst!) book by Piotr Skarga, which was also the fi rst book produced in the newly established printing shop in Vilnius. These words could be also found in the foreign editions of books written by Poles (e,g. Stanisław Reszka, 1574). Usage of this formula gradually grew, specifi cally within the Jesuits prints, however it is still absent from many of their books, including majority Skarga’s works. This formula might be found in frequently re-printed Skarga’s „Sermons” and „Lives of the Saints”.

The article presents a little-known story of the origin and structure of the fi rst official catechism of the Catholic Church, the Roman Catechism. Although the idea of creating a single, universal catechism for the whole Church already existed in the 15th century, its implementation began only after Luther’s breach with the Roman Catholic Church and the division of Christianity. Work on the new catechism began at the Council of Trent on 5 April 1546 and was completed after its closure, 23 September 1566. In the meantime, the project underwent many changes. Due to the emergence of Protestantism, the very nature of the work as well as its application were strongly disputed. Some theologians and representatives of the secular authority opted for the creation of a polemical catechism, but the majority supported a positive interpretation of the Catholic doctrine. In addition to the history of the text, the article focused on the internal structure of the work. From the patristic times onwards, religious education revolved around four basic elements: the profession of faith, the Ten Commandments, the sacraments and prayer. Over time these elements became part of all catechisms, including the Roman Catechism. However, they did not always follow the same pattern. While most of the Catholic catechisms were written in accordance with the following pattern: the profession of faith – prayer – the Ten Commandments – the sacraments, the Roman Catechism presented a new order: the profession of faith – the sacraments – the Ten Commandments – prayer. According to the research conducted in the article, this pattern was probably used deliberately, because it was more suitable for the Catholic doctrine of justifi cation.
The text concerns the problem of the implementation of the reforms of the Council of Trent in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, mainly in the case of the diocese of Vilna (Vilnius, Wilno). On the basis of sources originating from the cathedral chapter (now preserved in the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences) and transcripts (preserved in the Czartoryski Library in Kraków) the question has been addressed of the resistance among the clergy – nominally associated with Vilna Cathedral – to the implementation of the Tridentine reforms. The existence of the phenomenon is attested indirectly by examples of breaches of discipline by clergymen, including problems of drunkenness and relations with women. Among the factors contributing to the resistance of the chapter to the Tridentine reforms we can count the plural tenure of benefices. The effects on parish life of the accumulation of benefices can be discovered from the records of visitations. The problem of non-residence can be considered one of the main factors which led to group disintegration, and also to the changing roles and social functions of clergymen.

Tekst dotyczy problemu realizacji reform Soboru Trydenckiego w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim głownie na przykładzie diecezji wileńskiej. W oparciu o źródła o proweniencji kapitulnej (dziś przechowywane w Bibliotece Litewskiej Akademii Nauk im.
Eryka, Henryka, Ansgara, Zygfryda, Eschila, Botwida, Olafa, Brygidy i jej córki Katarzyny Szwedzkiej.

After the Council of Trent memorials of many saints worshipped in local churches or religious communities were omitted as a result of the unification of the liturgical books. In order to maintain their cult in particular provinces or convents, appropriate appendices to the breviary and the missal were prepared. A new book of forms entitled Officium Divinum of saints worshipped in the territory of Poland prepared by Stanisław Sokołowski, canon of Cracow, was issued in Cracow in 1596. In 1605 an appendix containing missal forms developed by Kacper of Kleczowo was printed. As a result of the influence of the Reformation in Scandinavia, religious battles, fighting the cult of saints and the destruction of their relics, King Sigismund III Vasa asked the Holy See to grant the permission to include the Swedish saints in the Polish appendix to the missal devoted to the saints (Proprium Poloniae). Having received the approval issued by the Congregation of Rites in 1616, individual dioceses made decisions to include these saints in their own liturgical calendar. In the seventeenth century missal and breviary forms were first issued as separate editions, and then they were printed together with the Proprium Poloniae. This appendix, which had not changed over the centuries, contained the memorials of the great saints of Scandinavia, inter alia Eric, Henry, Ansgar, Siegfried, Eschil, Botvid, Olaf, Bridget and her daughter Catherine of Sweden. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, some dioceses no longer posted Swedish patrons (e.g. Warmia) and the last common issue of Polish and Swedish saints was released in 1901. Saints from the period of the beginning of Christianity in Scandinavia are still present intercessors and may become patrons of the United Europe.
Początki szkolnictwa katolickiego na obecnym obszarze archidiakonatu pomorskiego sięgają średniowiecza. Szkoły były jednak nieliczne i zakładane w dużych miastach. Do rozwoju szkolnictwa katolickiego w okresie nowożytnym przyczynił się Sobór Trydencki. Informacje na temat istniejących szkół podawały wizytacje biskupie. Wynika z nich, że funkcję nauczyciela spełniał najczęściej organista. Nauka odbywała się zaledwie kilka miesięcy i sprowadzała się do znajomości podstaw wiary. Koszty utrzymania nauczyciela ponosił proboszcz i parafia.

The origins of Catholic education, in the current Gdańsk Archdiocese area, date back to the Middle Ages. The Council of Trent helped in the development of Catholic education in the modern period. Information regarding existing schools comes from reports from bishop’s visits. These indicate that most often the organist fulfilled the function of teacher. The maintenance costs of teachers were paid by parish priests and parishes. Schools for girls were located in female monasteries. Apart from elementary schools there were secondary schools, providing a higher level of education.
The paper presents problematic issues concerning Baptism and the Eucharist depicted in the teaching of the Council of Trent and of the contemporary Catechism of the Catholic Church. Because of the reformers, the teaching on Baptism and especially the teaching on the sacrificial character of the Eucharist and the real presence of Christ under the consecrated species became a subject of serious controversies. Those controversies gave the Catholic bishops courage to remain faithful to the Apostolic Tradition concerning what was expressed in the appropriate decrees of the Council of Trent. After four centuries a desire arose in the Catholic Church to show a clear indication concerning the understanding of the truths of the faith. Many people had difficulties with an expression of the truth proclaimed by the Church. Therefore the new Catechism has been prepared in which – according to the teaching of Vaticanum II – included clarifications of the Catholic faith.

Artykuł prezentuje problematykę chrztu i Eucharystii przedstawioną w nauce Soboru Trydenckiego i aktualnego Katechizmu Kościoła Katolickiego.
Artykuł omawia ważny okres, należący do tzw. reformy Kościoła. Piotra i Pawła, Łekno i Sompolno.

The article discusses an important period in the Church history – the so-called Church reform. It occurred after King Zygmunt August (1564) and the Polish clergy (1577) had adopted the resolutions of the Council of Trent. The implementation of those resolutions commenced at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. One of the postulates was the renewal of the life of the clergy – attitude to obligations and improvement of morals, customs and even external appearance. Wincenty de Seve’s inspection in the years 1608-1609 concerned the area of the archdeaconry of Gniezno. For the purposes of this article, its four deaneries were analysed: Holy Trinity, Saints Peter and Paul, Łekno and Sompolno. The main purpose of the inspection was the parish, which played an extremely important role in the society. The article discusses the image of the parish clergy resulting from the conducted inspection, whereby the inspection took into account the reform guidelines. From this image it follows that both people who were models and those who drastically violated different norms were rather exceptions. The most numerous group formed clergymen who mostly met the requirements, however, still various irregularities could be noticed. The biggest problems of the next, slightly smaller group were women and alcohol. The offenses also included lack of knowledge, sloppiness and inappropriate attire. The inspection shows that at the beginning of the 17th century, attempts were made to implement the reform of the parish clergy, but the elements of old habits and new norms could be found concurrently.
Chasuble is a decorative outer vestment used by Catholic priests to celebrate Mass. It comes from the Roman paenula, that is a light coat protecting from rain. It was commonly used by Christian priests since the 4th century, and it became a characteristic feature of the priesthood from the 7th century. Over the centuries chasubles were the subject of different modifications. After the Trent Council planets were shortened until the violin shape – these were so-called Roman chasubles. First chasubles had ornamental patterns of the fabrics they were made of. However, Roman paenule had vertical stripes, so-called clavi, which later formed a decorative column sometimes adopting the form of a cross. Chasubles were made from the best silk fabrics. Diocesan Museum in Siedlce has the exhibition of the Post-Tridentine chasubles. The embroidered chasuble from the 17th century is an example of Italian design. The chasubles from the 18th century are came from the Radziwiłł foundation from Biała Podlaska. The first is an example of French embroidery, whereas the second was made in a local manufacture. The red chasuble with the Star of the Order of the White Eagle is a very interesting exhibit, vere rarely decoration of liturgical vestments. The chasuble with the kontusz sash it is the Polish tradition of storage in memory of noble costume. The last example it is the funeral vestment with a very rich embroidery with the Passion of the Christ motifs. Throughout the time we can see a variety of fabrics, techniques and ornamentation methods used in the production of vestments. Each of the examples has its original decorativeness.

Do wyrobu ornatów stosowano najlepsze tkaniny jedwabne. Głównym motywem dekoracyjnym są haftowane preteksty. Muzeum Diecezjalne w Siedlcach posiada ekspozycję ornatów potrydenckich. Haftowany ornat z XVII wieku jest przykładem wzornictwa włoskiego. Ornaty z XVIII wieku pochodzą z fundacji Radziwiłłów z Białej Podlaskiej. Pierwszy jest przykładem hafciarstwa francuskiego, natomiast drugi został wykonany w miejscowym warsztacie. Ciekawym eksponatem jest czerwony ornat z gwiazdą Orderu Orła Białego – rzadko spotykana forma dekoracji szat liturgicznych. Ornat z pasa kontuszowego to polska tradycja przechowywania w pamięci stroju szlacheckiego.
