Th e article analyzes two court cases concerning Belgian citizens: Albert Snauwaert and Louis François Quievreux, who were accused of espionage and convicted by a Polish military courts in 1949. Their cases should be considered in the broader context of the deteriorating Polish-Belgian relations that existed at that time. Th e circumstances of their arrest and conviction as well as the eff orts made to free them are presented. The findings are based primarily on the results of a query conducted in various Polish archival collections (Archiwum Akt Nowych, Archiwum Ministerstwa Spraw Zagranicznych and Instytut Pamięci Narodowej). The cases of Snauwaert and Quievreux are only minor contributions to the wider problem of Polish-Belgian relations at the time, but they reveal the methods used by both sides during both the escalation and the subsequent calming of relations.

In diesem Aufsatz werden zwei Gerichtsverfahren um die belgischen Staatsbürger Albert Snauwaert und Louis François Quievreux analysiert, die 1949 von polnischen Militärgerichten wegen Spionage angeklagt und verurteilt wurden. Sie werden im breiteren Kontext der sich damals verschlechternden polnisch-belgischen Beziehungen untersucht. Es werden hierbei die Umstände der Verhaft ung und Verurteilung der Angeklagten sowie die Bemühungen um ihre Freilassung dargestellt. Die Ergebnisse basieren in erster Linie auf einer Recherche in polnischen Archivbeständen (Akten im Archiwum Akt Nowych, Archiwum Ministerstwa Spraw Zagranicznych in Warschau sowie im Instytut Pamięci Narodowej). Die Fälle um Snauwaert und Quievreux bilden lediglich einen kleinen Beitrag zum umfassenderen Problem der polnisch-belgischen Beziehungen während des Kalten Krieges. Sie zeigen einen Ausschnitt dieser Beziehungen und die Instrumente, die von beiden Seiten in der Zeit der eskalierenden und später abschwächenden Konfl ikte eingesetzt wurden.

Artykuł zawiera analizę dwóch spraw sądowych dotyczących obywateli belgijskich: Alberta Snauwaerta i Louisa François Quievreux oskarżonych o szpiegostwo i skazanych przez polskie sądy wojskowe w 1949 r. Należy je rozpatrywać w szerszym kontekście pogarszających się w tym okresie relacji polsko-belgijskich. Przedstawiono okoliczności ich aresztowania i skazania oraz wysiłki podejmowane w celu ich uwolnienia. Podstawą ustaleń są przede wszystkim wyniki kwerendy przeprowadzonej w polskich zbiorach archiwalnych (akta przechowywane w Archiwum Akt Nowych, Archiwum Ministerstwa Spraw Zagranicznych w Warszawie i w Instytucie Pamięci Narodowej). Sprawy Snauwaerta i Quievreux to tylko drobne przyczynki do szerszego problemu, jakim były polsko-belgijskie relacje w okresie zimnej wojny. Pokazują one pewien wycinek tych stosunków oraz instrumentarium, jakim posługiwały się obie strony w okresie eskalacji, a następnie wyciszenia konfliktów.

This paper intends to identify a representation of France at war related neither to gung-ho fiction nor to testimonial fiction in the French war novel of the first half of the 20th century. The vein of the War-as- itcould-be will be characterized by its historical span (dating back to before WW1 and lasting long after WW2), its generic forms (future wars, espionage, melodrama...) and its ideological ambivalence (secret concerns over the French soldier’s frailty and the Army’s ability to adequately defend the country).
