In the first part, the article deals with a description of the development of testamentary praxis of Cardinal Franz von Dietrichstein (1570–1636). It mentions the facultas testandi given by Pope Clement VIII in 1601, the orally pronounced final will from 1607 registered by the Olomouc Chapter, the episcopal testament from 1615, the non-preserved testament concerning the familiar possessions of Dietrichstein from 1614–1618, the set of four testaments from 1629 (one episcopal and three seculars, for the familiar possessions in Moravia, Bohemia and Austria) and last, the final version of the four testaments from the year 1634. In the second part, the article analyzes the contents of the Cardinal’s episcopal testaments and in particular the question of the change in Dietrichstein’s burial place in the context of family burial traditions. At the beginning of his ecclesiastical career, in around 1600, the Cardinal decided to be buried in the Jesuit church in Brno, only to change his mind in 1629 and indicate the presbytery of the Olomouc Cathedral as his future burial place. In the annex to the article, the inventory of the property of the bishopric of Olomouc from 1607, valid throughout the Cardinal’s life, is edited.
