On another Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, "The Future We Want" statement has been adopted, expressing the desire to renew the commitment to the SD and promoting the idea of sustainable future on the economic, social and environmental level. The content of this document indicates the domination of declarations and assurances over specific commitments. The most important, however, is to consistently take action in favor of SD, despite the scale of the challenges faced by the modern world, being much greater than means that respective entities are willing to spend to deal with global problems. In this case, we should hope that the results of the last Earth Summit will prove to be a good starting point for the formulation of subsequent SD objectives. Their accurate identification and systematic implementation will ensure sustainable development of the word economy.

Sustainable development principles reaching many spheres of human activities, public buildings refurbishment is not an exemption in this case. Buildings refurbishment supports excellent opportunities to reduce energy consumption in buildings as well as encourages other sustainable refurbishment principles implementation - citizens' healthcare, environment protection, rational resources use, information about sustainable refurbishment dissemination and stakeholders groups' awareness. During the pilot refurbishment FP-6 project Brita in PuBs, authors of this article have developed conceptual sustainable public buildings refurbishment model. Model was created basing on sustainable development principles, their consideration in decision making process and model efficiency influencing factors. In order to demonstrate models' application possibilities following the healthcare principle, practical case study of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University main building pollution mapping is given at the end of this article.

Aim/purpose – Financial inclusion is a catalyst for achieving sustainable development. This study attempts to evaluate impact of financial inclusion on sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach – Both Error Correction Model (ECM) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) were used to ascertain the short-run and long-run relationship respectively among the variables which covers the period from 2001 to 2016, as data for HDI (Human Development Index) were available for Nigeria from 2001 through 2016 only. Findings – The result of the analysis indicated that in the short-run there is short-run causality running from a number of commercial bank branches, demand deposit from the rural areas, loan to rural areas to HDI. The long-run result revealed that the explanatory variables consisting of loan to rural areas, number of commercial bank branches and demand deposit from the rural areas all have positive significant impact on HDI in Nigeria. The overall result revealed that financial inclusion has impact on sustainable development in Nigeria. Research implications/limitations – The study recommends that banks and monetary authorities should develop new product and services that will attract savings from the rural dwellers because of the level of significance of their deposit to the development of the country. All the more so as commercial banks should also ensure that the rural dwellers are provided with more bank branches, most especially, in areas where there are few or no banks. Credit facilities should also be provided to the people at an affordable rate as this will uplift the level of inclusion and reduce the level of exclusion in the country which will improve the sustainable development in the country. Originality/value/contribution – Empirically, the study attempted to investigate the impact of financial inclusion on sustainable development in Nigeria. The results of the study suggest that government should continue its effort in the area of poverty alleviation by embracing financial inclusion via a vis financial institutions introducing new financial product and services at lower cost that will cater for the disadvantaged group in the society.

Research background: The sustainable development and innovation economics theory and related literature place a lot of emphasis on the relationship between environment, society, and governance (ESG) and green innovation. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to understand what the factors are that influence green innovation and why there is a big disparity in green innovation capabilities between nations. In addition, this paper aims to investigate the impact of ESG performance of green innovation by using unbalanced panel data covering 118 sample countries during the period of 1999–2019. Methods: Panel fixed effect model; Instrumental variable (IV) method; First-differencing (FD) method; Kinky least-squares (KLS) approach. Findings & value added: ESG performance provides evidence for its positive and significant impact on such innovation. Among the ESG factors, governance seems to have the most important influence on green innovation. Moreover, the positive influence of ESG performance is more evident in higher income and wealthy nations. Furthermore, we also conclude that ESG performance can affect green innovation through FDI, human capital, financial development and trade openness. These conclusions hold up after a number of robustness tests and taking into account any potential endogenous issues. Overall, policymakers should pay close attention to the findings.

Purpose of the article is to present the way of application of methodology of environmental metrics within the total environmental assessment framework. An inevitable part of sustainable development initiatives is sustainable measurement metrics. This kind of metrics is being represented by three sets of indicators: Environmental, Social and Economic. Sustainability measurement metrics tends to measure environmental safety (e.g.: Ecological footprint), social responsibility (e.g.: Global Reporting Initiative) and economic efficiency (e.g.: Net Present Value test). Studying behaviour of companies in sustainability measurement metrics application, using another scientific method is well welcomed. Methods used in article are synthesis, analysis, deduction and comparative analysis. We are synthesizing those methods in a presented model which examines quality of environmental improvements across departments of selected organization. In other words, the model is able to quantify an extent how individual managerial decision contributed towards overall improvement in environmental performance of whole organization. Model works with and additive elements. In order to derive results using multiplicative elements, we are using logarithmic method in a model. Scientific aim of the article is to synthesize scientific methods aimed at environmental performance measurement into unified and universal model usable by managements of small and medium-sized enterprises. The background of this mission is to ensure that environmental performance will be correctly reported, data delivered by various companies (organisations) will be benchmarkable and consequently, Corporate Social Responsibility concepts worked out by individual organizations will be trustable. In the article, we are discovering that use of proposed universal model has marketable outcomes. Thanks to an existence of thriving markets valuating triple bottom line of sustainability, results delivered by the model helped to a company PintInox, S. p. A. to succeed at such kind of market. Conclusions the article delivers are pointing out an importance of interdisciplinary cooperation within field of sustainable development.

This communication tries to shape and to ground the idea that Rural Studies and Rural Sociology have a particularly promising job to do in re-assembling the Social, the Natural and the Technical within the treadmill of sustainable development. It is argued that the cross-fertilization of the ecological modernization movement and Social Studies of Science and Technology (particularly Actor- Network-Theory) is giving the opportunity to establish a perspective that might enlighten and accompany the processes of making agricultural sciences and technology more ecological. But this requires specific conditions and ways of doing social studies in situations that include those processes.

Odesa is a unique city: it is the third-largest city in Ukraine and the second in the Black sea region. During its short but eventful history, it gathered a variety of cultural layers within its boundaries, what had reflected in its architecture, urban life, and unique accent of its inhabitants. The city`s waterfront is considered to be the Pearl of the Black Sea. Starting with the receiving of the Porto Franco status in 1819, Odesa was the economic nexus and the symbol of entrepreneurship in the Russian Empire. During the Soviet period, city and port expanded to reach the goals of the communist era. The paradigm shift in economic realms related to the transformation of the economy at the beginning of the 1990s shed light on the city's weaknesses. Water and air pollution, large industrial zones in the sea façade of the city, and lack of high-level infrastructure for tourists had transformed the image of Odesa into a regular post-soviet town in the conditions of the market economy. On the other hand, the newborn post-soviet and postindustrial citizens of Odesa have different priorities and do not necessarily think about the spatial problems. A comprehensive study, using the observations, literature review, and interviews, was conducted to describe the influence of the social realm on an urban form of the Waterfront. The result of the analysis supports the hypothesis of the study: the trajectories of the social, economic, and spatial development of the Odesa waterfront are not correlating with each other. Within this paper the possible scenarios and prospects for transformation of the urban waterfront of Odesa are discussed on the basis of the wider perspective of reshaping the post-soviet waterfronts.

Over the past 20 years the phenomenon of socially responsible investment (SRI) has grown considerably in popularity and there has been in particular a sharp increase in research into its environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. The process of SRI itself and research into this diverse phenomenon have become widespread particularly in developed countries and essentially supported by international organizations, specialized financial consulting companies, and institutional investors. The issues of theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of SRI in the Ukrainian market have considerable potential for research. The aim of the article is to study theoretical and methodological aspects of SRI as well as define the current state and prospects of socially responsible investment in Ukraine. The article covers the existing differences in the approaches to defining socially responsible investment and social investment, describes their features and proposes a method of classification, as well as clarifying the role of SRI under conditions of sustainable development. The current problems and prospects of SRI development in Ukraine are discussed.

The concept of sustainable development is slowly deploying into various sectors of the economy. In the European Union, one of the areas where this idea is used is energy. The concept of sustainable energy is widely used and intuitively construed, however, it is difficult to discern the full definition of this phenomenon. The purpose of this article is to define the concept of "sustainable energy". It takes into account both the issue of permanence, as well as the inclusion of social and environmental needs for economic development. Moreover, the text consist general characterization of the main areas where application of this concept is possible.

The notion of sustainable development is one of the most popular concepts of our time. However, it remains controversial and quite problematic, especially for small islands and their communities. These challenges arise in relation to the limited scope of resources which can be used for development, and the difficulty of defining the needs of future generations. Looking at the history of many island jurisdictions, one is confronted with a picture of substantial economic evolution. Island communities have rarely, if ever, been able to foresee or plan their future; frequently, the situation has turned out to be very different from any previously envisaged scenarios. This should not be surprising, since small island destinies are often determined by external variables, over which they have little, if any, control. These variables include colonization, competition over scarce territories, improvements in transportation technologies, the information revolution and natural disasters. Thus, the very idea of sustainable development with respect to small islands is nothing but a charming slogan, an entertaining fiction rather than a reachable target. Of course, islands and their communities can take‘green’ initiatives that are more environmentally friendly; they cannot, however, achieve a state of sustainable development, except with a serious deterioration in the quality of life and off-island connectivity (by air or sea) of their residents.

In the paper the selected review of main research directions and basic statements from the area of evaluations and comparisons of long-term project is given as well as - questions concerning an adjustment of discounting functions to the "true" fluctuations of individual preferences (in the passage of time) are asked. The above research is carried out in two (complementary) planes. At first the analyses of preorders in sets of infinite sequences of (instantaneous) utilities are shortly reported. The subject of the second part of the article is an identification of the analytical shapes of the "exact" and "justintergenerational" discounting functions.

The article contains the review of the indicators used in recording and monitoring of sustainable development principles, realization with taking into consideration both their socio-economic and ecological aspects. The review of the indicators was preceded by the attempt of defining the sustainable development notion. The review is mainly based on the codification of the common elements for its different definitions. To show the practical problems connected with the eco-development measure, the author also mentioned specific indicators, which were adopted by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. In this review the author presented brief comment on these indicators. (original abstract)

Podkreślono decydującą rolę celnictwa w kontroli przestrzegania wymogów zrównoważonego rozwoju w międzynarodowych obrotach towarowych oraz konieczność szerszej niż dotychczas współpracy z innymi służbami kontrolnymi i biznesem.

In this article I discuss two main types of development: sustainable and accelerated, which largely contradict each other. I highlight the differences between these two types of developments and describe the reasons behind the growing interest in accelerated development. I also speculate about conditions needed to achieve accelerated development in a democratic setting characterised by neoliberal economy. Moreover, I present arguments that are raised by both opponents and supporters of sustainable development.

Along with civilization trends and rising environmental awareness ecoclusters reach an important role on the world map of cluster initiatives. The European Union has adopted a cluster-based policy. As a result, the number of cluster initiatives has steadily been increasing in the EU over the past decade. Also many member countries introduce eco-cluster policy and undertake the organized efforts to improve growth and competitiveness of the eco-initiatives. Eco-business is expected to continue to be a steadily growing market. Governments, especially at a regional and local level, are indicated as essential supporters of the cluster organization. It means that for the best outcomes eco-cluster policy should be tailored in cities or regions where it can best address the eco-innovative needs of a specific industry. Poland as the EU member state should integrate cluster policy into its national reforms. It means strict links and coordination of the overall industrial, innovation, regional, SMEs, and environmental policies. Poland is currently at an early stage of cluster policy adoption.

The crisis observed in the global economy in recent years has contributed to redefining the concept of economic development. Even more attention was paid to its alternative concept, i.e. the sustainable development (SD). The implementation of SD is currently also supported by the programs of green economic deal. The New Green Deal (NGD) is a global program of reforms, that should boost the global economy by creating green jobs, investing in renewable energy sources, as well as providing a restructuring of the global economic system in order to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Poland is implementing European Union’s strategy for sustainable development too. Actions undertaken by Poland, related to the NGD, encourage the intensification of the SD implementation in the economic, social and environmental spheres.
