Due to some linguistic features of Tamil, the teachers of this language have to be certain which specific variety of Tamil they are going to teach during their classes. Thus, the very subject of any Tamil language course needs to be precisely defined, and the crucial point of Tamil teaching methodology seems to be not the issue of 'how to teach', but rather 'what should be taught'. The objective of this paper is to show the choices Tamil teachers have to make in order to decide on which form of the language they are going to teach. Therefore, the paper indicates the different varieties of Tamil and discusses the decisions (with their consequences) Tamil teachers have to make. The need to teach both the Spoken as well as the Literary variety of Tamil is in particular emphasised.
