At the end of the 16th century, the last female member of the Premonstratensian monastery in Nová Říše Anna Černická became involved in a sharp dispute with the newly appointed prior Šebestián Chotěbořský. Although it primarily concerned the method of the prior’s appointment and his competences, the distinct perception of monastic principles played and important role. The article firstly studies abbatial elections in the Strahov Monastery from a general perspective and secondly tries to analyze individual elections and summarize tendencies that changed over the period of more than two hundred years. The first sphere concentrates on restored monastic decrees from 1630 and the way they defined the superior’s election as well as decrees issued by the ruler in this respect. Outcomes of an analysis in the second sphere point out the individual’s qualifications for the “electable” position in the Strahov Monastery and allow comparison with other Premonstratensian monasteries within the Bohemian and Moravian circarium.
