Packaging and magazine covers share many common traits. Both these elements are very important in relation to marketing activities of media and non-media enterprises. And while there are quite a lot of studies on packaging itself, there are not as many in-depth analyses of magazine covers. This article is a part of a series of scholarly texts, in which the author analyses the phenomenon of magazines’ front pages, aiming to fill a certain scientific void when it comes to research on magazine covers and e-covers. In this article, the author confirms the hypothesis that covers of contemporary magazines are, in fact, their ‘packaging’. The study also fulfils the following goals: 1) to define the term “packaging”; 2) to discuss the concept of media product packaging; 3) to present the phenomenon of magazine covers as packaging in various theoretical and empirical contexts. The empirical inquiry is based on quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative research was conducted by the survey method based on CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) technique between the 2nd and the 9th of September 2016, involving a nationwide research sample consisting of Poles. The qualitative research was based on analyses of scholarly sources related to the study of magazine covers, and then on comparison of data situated on magazine covers and data related to packaging when it comes to its function, composition and design.

The article discusses improvisational performances of the Philomaths in the context of the advent of a so-called modernity which correlated with a rapid change in people’s lifestyles. My starting point in examining the most characteristic phenomena of the literary life in Vilnius is the newly emerged economic environment: the enormous popularity of improvised poems (performed or written impromptu) and the development of the printed press. The analysis of the Philomaths’ performances, letters and poems focuses on various aspects of improvising, and not only on poetry presentations but also on a spontaneous way of living and the process of literary production. I argue that the improvisational activity of the Philomaths can be considered as an act of experimenting with and adapting various (traditional as well as innovative) literary patterns, and therefore as a poetic laboratory of the new romantic era.

How media confront abnormal social trends speaks volumes about the prevailing social and journalism norms and values. Bleak economic and social conditions may give rise to suicides, which classical sociological theory views as a strong indicator of a society in a serious crisis and in need of reconstruction. Media coverage and especially comments on such grave events demonstrate the capacity and willingness of journalists to engage in a sensible communication on the issue, or attempt to divert the public’s attention from the crux of the matter. A value analysis is thus revealing of media’s motivation and the eventual outcome of its thorough or selective highlighting of an alarming situation. The study employs a qualitative type of content analysis to discover the willingness of media to engage in an honest dialogue on the larger picture. The conclusion is hardly optimistic: media in Bulgaria tend to eschew dialogue, provide narrow technocratic explanations of tragedies, developing insensitive blind spots for the wider reality, the social and the human, thus failing its mission. Since values change slowly and under the influence of long-term factors, this study provides an insight on the way cultivation forces have worked in the Bulgarian society and media.

The interview presents Professor Andrej Tušer’s opinions on various topics related to journalistic genres and issues modern journalism has to face, with emphasis on the press. Particular attention is paid to addressing the opportunities for independent journalism and the freedom of expression in the current socio-political situation, as well as to the impact of journalism on politicians and their behaviour. His perspectives on the rapidly changing conditions within journalism, contemporary methods of media production, competences of journalists in the age of multi-platform journalism and the development of the Internet and online journalism are also included. Professor Tušer’s practical experience and theoretical expertise are reflected in a range of concepts concerning theoretical issues of journalistic production – including the meaning of genres in contemporary journalism and the position of regional and local print media. The given responses function as thorough, important and critical reflections of this patriarch of Slovak print journalism and journalism theory on the development and the current state of discursive journalism issues in connection with dynamic socio-political and technological transformations.

The aim of the article is to present a picture of the Polish Diaspora in Harbian which emerges from the Polish press. For the end dates, the year 1931 was chosen – the beginning of annexation of Manchuria by the Kwantung Army, and the end date was the year 1937 – The beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The main sources are the three most important Polish newspapers: published by the association “Gospoda Polska” [Polish Inn] – “Listy Harbińskie” [Letters from Harbin] “Daleki Wschód” [Far East] and edited by Polish, Catholic clerics: “Tygodnik Polski” [Polish Weekly]. The supplementary source is issued in Warsaw: “Kwartalnik Wschód” [Quarterly East], which is closely linked to the first two titles. In writing about the activities of the local Polish community in Harbin, the Polish press mostly focused on such aspects as: educational and cultural activities, in the case of the “Listy harbińskie”, “Daleki Wschód” and “Kwartalnik Wschód” and religious-cultural issues, in the case of “Tygodnik Polski”. All numbers devoted a considerable amount of space to the charitable activities of the local Polonia. From reading the sources, we can also deduce that both patriotism and piety were important for the members of Harbińska Polonia, as well as openness to other cultures. However, the press lacks direct mention of the repressions which could have touched the members of the Polish community in Harbin by the occupying authorities of the city.
