The essay's author analyzes the connections between 'thought' and 'politics' in a 'destitute time'. A 'destitute time' - in one of its meanings - is an epoch of 'totalitarian power and ideology'. In this epoch, 'thought' is put to the test. On the one hand, to remain faithful to its essence, it must carefully and responsibly guard its independence in all circumstances and without regard to circumstances; on the other hand - it is tempted to become dependent in the name of independence, which means that thought, essentially apolitical, becomes a political act: it accepts too confined boundaries of its autonomy. At the same time, in the same epoch of 'destitute time', it is tempted in the horizon of solidarity, where thought, taking all responsibility for thinking truth and being towards truth, tries to escape from responsibility for the evil that is happening.
