The paper presents three case studies relating to the establishment of trade unions in private greenfield sector in Poland. Peter Blau's structural theory of social exchange constitutes the study's theoretical background. Labour relation is treated as a exchange relation of resources accessible both to the employer and employees and the trade union as a factor of change of that exchange rules. The change occurs with taking the influential factors into consideration, i.e. core and periphery sector distinction, managerial approach and employees' leader appearance.
The objective of the research discussed in this papere was the establishing of the real state of the functioning of works councils as well as an attempt at defining the effectiveness of this new form of employee democracy and its impact on company economic efficiency in the wake of the initial period of its functioning.
This article contains a description of the status of works councils in the representative system of social dialogue organizations encompassing trade unions, works councils, and the managements of companies and plants. The author presents the functions of various employee representative bodies as a partner for works trade union organizations as well as the owners or managers of business organizations.
