The 220th anniversary of Kościuszko Uprising was celebrated in March this year. The role of Tadeusz Kościuszko in this historical event is worth remembering and we should ponder about the chances of the first national liberation uprising, which was the first attempt in the history to awaken the patriotism among the people of the Republic of Poland (we have to take under consideration the fact that most of them were serfs without the motivation to fight for their cause). It was the revolution in thinking and activity of the idealist such as Tadeusz Kościuszko, but in those conditions of political surrounding and social determinants of noble Poland it was doomed to fail.
The national conistrubultion to the Racławice Panorama appears to be very significant; the people invoked inspiration for its creation and organised various rescue actions in the difficult periods of its history. The author goes back to the time when the national appreciation of the victorious battle of Racławice was felt to be capable of upholding the patriotic spirit of the nation and for thiis reason it was decided to finance the Panorama. He presents several cases when this national monument was rescued but he highlights social actions after April 1944 when the pavilion in Lvov was destroyed, the painting damaged, rolled up, stared and eventually taken to Wrocław. Attention is drawn to the fact that it was only the activities of the last Racławice Panorama Social Committee — widely supported by the Polish people at home and abroad, assisted and highly appreciated in respect of their significance by the authorities — that seem to have contributed successfully to the saving of the Racławice Panorama and to making it available to the public again.
In the second half of the nineteenth century a large part of the Polish emigration made its way to North America. Several decades later, it comprised an almost four millionstrong community, organized in a thousand different associations which cultivated national traditions and, predominantly, patriotic feelings. When in 1903 the American Congress decided to build a statue of Kazimierz Pulaski, the Polish emigres embarked upon a collection of funds for a monument of Tadeusz Kościuszko, a general in the American War of Independence and a hero of the struggle waged for a free Poland at the end of the eighteenth century. The execution of the monument was entrusted to Antoni Popiel, a well-known Polish sculptor. The monument was located in Lafayette park opposite the White House. The unveiling which took place in 1910 was a great state ceremony attended by the President of the United States and delegations from partitioned Poland. A threemeter high bronze figure of General Tadeusz Kościuszko, standing on a granite pedestal, is dressed in an Amercian uniform. Figures of soldiers including that of a Polish peasant who brandishes a scythe against tsarist troops, surround the monument’s base; an eagle symbolizes the Polish national emblem. Almost eighty years later, the metal surface of the monument became corroded and required conservation which was inaugurated in 1987.

Budowanie tumulusów, zwanych też kopcami, to wyjątkowa forma upamiętniania wybitnych osób zmarłych czy utrwalania w zbiorowej pamięci narodu ważnego wydarzenia historycznego.
The idea of scythemen is not limited to soldiers armed with scythes. It is related to the vision of a soldier-citizen, recruited from a rural environment, who is able to stand up for the motherland of his own free will. In this context, the Second Insurgent Corps may be an attempt to implement such an idea. The national authorities repeatedly tried to encourage the peasant class to join the ranks of the insurgent army. Initially, this did not bring positive results. Insurgent propaganda often referred to, for example, Tadeusz Kościuszko as, who first called on the peasants to defend the country on equal terms with other strata of society. The insurgent authorities eagerly emphasized this equality, trying to convince the peasant class, that only in the ranks of the Polish army will they win freedom, not only political but also personal and, perhaps most importantly, economic. The last dictator of the January Uprising Romuald Traugutt, believed that a military action without the support of the common people is only a demonstration and cannot bring independence. Hence the efforts of Traugutt, which led to the announcement of a mass mobilisation of the entire population, not only the nobility. This intention could not be implemented under the conditions of that time, however, the efforts put into creating and organizing the 2nd corps of the insurgent army may indicate that they were not without the possibility of implementation.

This article deals with the phenomenon of cultural performances in honor of great heroes, which created and maintained a patriotic tradition in Poland at the turn of the century. These performancesare presented as a result of a political project that was conceived as a didactic and persuasiveaction. Their goal was to try and create a new society, a new community united by the idea of a freeand strong Poland.
In the article, the Author discussed selected images of Tadeusz Kościuszko by Michał Stachowicz (1768–1825) – a painter, drawer and graphic artist from Cracow, known mainly as the creator of scenes commemorating important historical events, in particular related to the Kościuszko Uprising. The artist has created several dozen works (oil paintings, gouaches, drawings) showing the figure of the Chief, repeated many times in different shots. These are both portraits (individual and group) as well as collective, historical, battle and allegorical scenes. On all these compositions, Kościuszko appears as a commander, national hero, defender of the Homeland, a steadfast man.

W artykule omówiono wybrane przedstawienia Tadeusza Kościuszki pędzla Michała Stachowicza (1768–1825) – krakowskiego malarza, rysownika i grafika, znanego głównie jako twórcę scen upamiętniających ważne wydarzenia historyczne, w szczególności związane z insurekcją kościuszkowską.
In the literature on the Kosciuszko Insurrection, military, political, social or international aspects of insurrection are described in details. There was also often tackled a problem of participation of the clergy, mostly Roman Catholics, and attitudes of individual churches and religious communities towards the uprising. Though, it was rarely researched on relation of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko to Uniates (Greek Catholics) and his active attempts to engage Uniates in the rise. Aprops of discussing the Polish-Russian relations in a religious context (Russia used care for the Orthodox church to interfere in Polish affairs) questions arise also over Kosciuszko and the Polish government attitude towards Orthodox church. However, the Orthodox inhabitants of Poland (mostly Russians) were a minority far less numerous than their compatriots who adhere to the Greek Catholic Rite (Uniates). Kosciuszko planned to extend the uprising over the whole Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and involve in it as much people as possible. He wanted to attract all social, ethnic and religious groups, in order to give the uprising character of nationwide movement. Clergymen of various denominations were often intermediaries in the transmission of the call for uprising, thus they were addressees of the appeals of Commander in Chief and the insurgents’ authorities. In the letters calling for the uprising Kosciuszko appealed to patriotic and religious feelings at the same time. To engage the peasant in uprising (peasants from all over the country, but among Unites and Orthodox dominated peasants) and cover the eastern territories inhabited by Ruthenians, Kościuszko in camp at Polaniec issued series of very important documents, including The Manifesto of Polaniec and appeals to the Uniate and Orthodox clergy. Document which is published here is an unknown Kosciuszko’s letter to the Uniate clergy, that was found in the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv.
This article describes an age-old form of fortification, i.e. a redoubt. This type of enclosed earthwork, with a ground plan based on a square or another polygonal shape, was used for independent defence. Redoubts were most popular in the period from the 16th century to the beginning of the First World War. The Kościuszko Redoubt, located in the UMCS Botanical Garden in Sławinek in Lublin, has survived until the present day without significant changes or major damage from past wars. Currently, it is not only an interesting example of this forgotten fortification structure, but also an extraordinary token of remembrance of General Tadeusz Kościuszko, who designed and prepared it during his stays at the manor house of his uncle in Lublin.

General Stanisław Mokronowski is one of the key figures of the Warsaw Uprising, which took place during the Kościuszko Uprising. In the discussed period, this little-known in the Polish tradition officer served as the commander of the Capital City Garrison. He was recommended for this position by Hugo Kołłątaj, the leader of the Polish Jacobins. By calling him “the Polish Washington” he made it clear that his high military qualifications can tip the conflict scales in favor of The Republic of Poland. As the garrison commander, gen. Mokronowski became known as an efficient organizer and a relentless guardian of discipline and order in the city threatened by Russian military intervention. His tasks included, among others, defense of Warsaw and Mazovia, fortifying the capital city, recruit training, supervising upon garrison’s duty services, providing weapons and ammunition, providing provisioning, maintenance of hospitals. Merits of gen. Mokronowski contributed – after many years – to recognize him as the patron of the Warsaw garrison.

Generał Stanisław Mokronowski należy do grona kluczowych postaci Insurekcji Warszawskiej, do której doszło w czasie Powstania Kościuszkowskiego. W omawianym okresie ten mało znany w polskiej tradycji oficer był komendantem stołecznego garnizonu. Na to stanowisko rekomendował go lider „polskich jakobinów” Hugo Kołłątaj.
The article offers an analysis of the representations of Tadeusz Kościuszko in early American newspapers (1776-1820). The study shows that the American press presented Kościuszko as a heroic figure, significant in the making of America as a nation through his participation in the War of Independence. Kościuszko was not initially recognized as an important military leader of the Revolution, but he was re-discovered as an American hero after he had distinguished himself as the leader of the 1794 uprising in Poland. The mythologization of Kościuszko consisted in interpreting his life as a struggle for liberty, equality, and republicanism, the values which laid at the foundation of America as a nation.

Artykuł stanowi analizę wizerunku Tadeusza Kościuszki we wczesnej prasie amerykańskiej (1776-1820).
The aim of this article is to analyse issues related to the reform of the legal status of the rural population during the Kościuszko Uprising, which was the first Polish national uprising. The analysis concerns the fundamental reform of the legal situation of peasants introduced by the uprising authorities in 1794, whose aim was to make this social group join the Uprising. The Commander-in-Chief – Tadeusz Kościuszko – announced the reduction of serfdom loathed by Polish peasants and lifted the ban on leaving the land without the permission of the owner. The defeat of the Uprising destroyed peasants’ hopes to be liberated from serfdom. However, it fostered their awareness of being members of the Polish Nation, contrary to the claims of the nobility and the magnates, who considered only their estate to be the Polish Nation and peasants to be their subjects, refusing them the attribute of being Polish.
The uprising against Tsarist Russia, which broke out in 1794 in Lithuania, part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was an unsuccessful attempt to free Poland and Lithuania from Russian control after the Second Partition of Poland (1793). The uprising lasted from April to August 1794. Its fall was followed by repressions, especially against Polish participants, who were deprived of their property and possessions and subjected to further oppression.
