The literature of the Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania constitutes the most important and richest part of their cultural heritage, as well as a lasting trace of Tatar settlements in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The literature that flourished during the spiritual revival of the Renaissance and Reformation somewhere in the seemingly God-forsaken, remote Eastern Borderlands has not been forgotten; on the contrary, it has been recognised as a unique phenomenon of great spiritual, literary and cultural value. This phenomenon manifests itself in the extraordinary combination of the Oriental Islamic culture and Christian culture, two components that appear to be mutually exclusive but are in fact in perfect harmony with each other, both in the life of society and in the literary works of Polish-Lithuanian Tatars. The paper is dedicated to literary manuscripts of the Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, including their genesis at the background of the Tatar settlement in the territory of the Republic of Poland, characteristic features and typology of the manuscripts on the basis of the criteria of form and content. Furthermore, the author discusses the research areas, beginning with the description of the state of research on Tatar manuscripts from the point of view, through the characteristics of the current research on this matter, as well as reporting the institutions running and coordinating the interdisciplinary and international activities within the scope of the research, editing and popularization of the issues connected with the kitabistics.

The article talks about the oldest copy of the Polish translation of Koran made in Minsk by the Tatar (Muslim) interpreter Uriash ibn Ismail (Imam of Minsk) in the second half of the 17th century. The article consists of two parts devoted to the orthographic system of the manuscript and to the specific features of its language caused by the influence of the Belarusian and Arabic languages.

The healing texts of heterogeneous origin are preserved in the manuscripts of the Belarusian Tatars in large numbers. According to written sources, they have been widely used in the past in the Tatar environment. Recent field studies show that the healing texts have not yet completely disappeared from use. These texts have deep roots in the ancient Turkic culture, and also reflect various influences, mainly from the side of Islam, as well as from the Christian-Slavic environment. In general, the healing texts are very interesting sources for analyzing the traditional worldviews of the Belarusian Tatars.

Przedmiotem rozważań niniejszego artykułu jest nowy, do chwili obecnej niepoddany opisom, materiał badawczy w postaci nuski ze zbiorów Muzeum Historycznego w Białymstoku. Celem była analiza tekstologiczno-filologiczna wymienionego zabytku z uwzględnieniem transkrypcji, identyfikacji treści i przekładu na język polski. Analizowany materiał źródłowy reprezentuje jeden z rodzajów tatarskich ksiąg rękopiśmiennych, składających się na bogaty dorobek piśmienniczy Tatarów Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego, którego rozwój i jedyny w swoim rodzaju charakter nierozerwalnie związane są z historią osadnictwa ludności tatarskiej na tych terenach. Piśmiennictwo to, które rozkwitło pod wpływem ożywienia duchowego doby renesansu i reformacji, a w chwili obecnej stanowi najważniejszą i najbogatszą część tatarskiej spuścizny kulturowej, uznane zostało za zjawisko szczególne, swoisty fenomen, któremu przypisuje się ogromną wartość duchową, literacką i kulturową.

Nuska from the Białystok Museum of History has never been researched. This article is the first exploration of one of the prime examples of the Tatar literature, dating back to the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and blooming Tatar settlements. That literature especially flourished during the Renaissance and Reformation. Today Tatars ascribe to it tremendous cultural and spiritual value. The author performs a philological analysis of the text, taking into account transcription, content identification and translation into Polish.

Chamaił jest jednym z rodzajów piśmiennictwa religijnego muzułmanów Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Nazywa się go modlitewnikiem, co odnosi się do podstawowej treści oraz funkcji, jaką pełni. Zawartość księgi bywa jednak różnorodna i wykracza poza standardowe modlitwy codzienne oraz okolicznościowe. Artykuł koncentruje się na treści dodatkowej, okołomodlitewnej zawartej w omawianym typie księgi, czyli m.in. na mowach okolicznościowych, fragmentach utworów literackich, notatkach osobistych oraz zaklęciach i wróżbach obecnych na kartach tatarskich manuskryptów. Treść ta analizowana jest w odniesieniu do szerszej tradycji piśmienniczej, mianowicie do zaliczanych do form paraliterackich sylw szlacheckich (silvae rerum).

Chamail is the name for religious, literary Muslim manuscripts, popular among the Muslims in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its basic task and function is to serve as a prayer book, though it may contain all kinds of other texts besides the religious ones, or written for specific purposes. The present article is concerned with this additional, quasi prayer functions of chamails, such as speeches and addresses, fragments of literature, personal notes, spells and prophecies. It examines it in reference to the wider quasi literary tradition, the so-called silvae rerum (nobility’s home chronicles).
