The article presents a kind of attempt of applying typological exegesis to the text of 4 Macc. In the light of the analyzes carried out, it is clear that the seven martyr brothers can be seen as a type of Christ: a number seven, determining number of brothers - the type of perfection of the person of Christ; the origin of the seven brothers from Abraham - the type of origin of Christ; directing by the brothers “pious reason” - the type of surrendering to the Father’s will through Christ; persuasion of Antiochus IV - the type of Christ’s temptation by the devil; the martyr’s sacrifice/victim of the brothers - the type of saving sacrifice of Christ; “established in heaven” brothers - the type of Christ’s ascension. Bearing in mind that 4 Macc drew from 2 Macc or from the same sources, one can state that the manner of presenting the seven brothers by the author of the first century AD, whose history took place in the second century BC, even more - in a typological perspective - brought them closer to the person of Christ. In this context, the mother of seven brothers deserves attention, whose person could be interpreted as a type of Mary - Mother of Christ.

W niniejszym artykule została przedstawiona swego rodzaju próba zastosowania egzegezy typologicznej do tekstu 4 Mch. W świetle przeprowadzonych analiz widać wyraźnie, że siedmiu braci męczenników może być postrzeganych jako typ Chrystusa: liczba siedem, określająca ich ilość - typem doskonałości osoby Chrystusa; pochodzenie siedmiu braci od Abrahama - typem pochodzenia Chrystusa; kierowanie się przez braci „pobożnym rozumem” - typem poddania się woli Ojca przez Chrystusa; namowy Antiocha IV - typem kuszenia Chrystusa przez diabła; męczeńska ofiara braci - typem ofiary zbawczej Chrystusa; „utwierdzeni w niebie” braci - typem wniebowstąpienia Chrystusa. Posługując się cytowanym wyżej stwierdzeniem św. Ireneusza, można powiedzieć, że rzeczywiście w 4 Mch ukryty jest Chrystus za pomocą typów, które związane są z postaciami siedmiu braci machabejskich. Mając natomiast na uwadze fakt, że 4 Mch czerpała z 2 Mch lub z tych samych źródeł, można stwierdzić, iż sposób przedstawienia przez autora z I w. po Chr. siedmiu braci, których historia rozegrała się w II w. przed Chr., jeszcze bardziej - w perspektywie typologicznej - przybliżył ich do Osoby Chrystusa. W tym kontekście na uwagę zasługuje także matka siedmiu braci, której osobę można byłoby zinterpretować jako typ Maryi - Matki Chrystusa.

Czwarta Księga Machabejska (4 Mch) w opisie modlitwy Eleazara zanoszonej przed męczeńską śmiercią (6,29) oraz męczeństwa siedmiu braci ciepiących wraz z matką za naród (17,21), dwukrotnie używa terminu ἀντίψυχος, co oznacza „dany w zamian za życie”. Przymiotnik ten pojawia się wyłącznie dwa razy w całej Septuagincie (LXX), właśnie w 4 Mch. Kontekst obu fragmentów sugeruje szersze znaczenie tego terminu, tłumaczonego w kategoriach ofiary z życia mającej charakter przebłagalny, ekspiacyjny, zastępczy i dobrowolny, a nawet zadośćczyniący za grzechy narodu żydowskiego. W niniejszym artykule temat męczeństwa ekspiacyjnego ukazany w 4 Mch zostanie podjęty w kontekście biblijnym, tekstów apokryficznych i innych tekstów starożytnych, w nawiązaniu do przepływu idei oraz terminologii grecko-rzymskiej religii, poezji i filozofii. Zostaną ponadto przeanalizowane możliwe tłumaczenia terminu ἀντίψυχος, ujęte w szerokim kontekście terminologii greckiej i nie tylko, tak by ukazać możliwe związki idei ekspiacyjnego męczeństwa z myślą obecną w Nowym Testamencie.

The Fourth Book of Maccabees (4 Macc) in the description of Eleazar's prayer, before he suffered a martyr’s death (6:29) as well as the martyrdom of seven brothers and their mother who suffered for the nation (17:21), the term ἀντίψυχος (which means “given in exchange for life”) is used twice. This adjective appears only twice in the Septuagint (LXX), to be precise, in 4 Macc The context of both passages suggests a broader meaning of the term, translated with reference to a sacrifice of life having a propitiatory, expiatory, vicarious and voluntary character, and even atonement for the sins of the Jewish people. In this article, the subject of expiatory martyrdom in 4 Macc will be taken in the context of the biblical, apocryphal and other ancient texts, with reference to the flow of ideas and terminology of Greco-Roman religion, poetry and philosophy. In addition, possible translations of the term ἀντίψυχος will be analyzed, included in the broader context of Greek and other terminologies, so as to show possible connections between the idea of expiatory martyrdom and the ideas described in the New Testament.
