The article deals with the problem of the stylistic of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov TheMaster and Margarita. Literary style of the novel is often referred to satire, parody and grotesque.Nonetheless, Bulgakov’s novel can not be called a comic one, since its ideologicalessence belongs to the category of tragedy, in which catharsis goes beyond the existentialsituation of individual characters and transforms into the transcendental sphere. The styleof the novel takes on the triple model, which is subject to speech style of the characters andnarrative.The first stylistic group in the article is called high-style (statements of Woland, YeshuaHa-Nozri and Pontius Pilate), the second style of low (expressions represent by Moskovdwellers) and the third - middle style (statements of Margarita and Woland’s retinue). Thelatter category is the most sophisticated and includes all the other stylistic groups. It combinesboth of the previous style as the Margarita, Koroviev and cat Behemoth act as intermediariesbetween the two worlds (the higher world of the truth and the lower world of falsehood).

The article is devoted to the problem of time and space as the essential factors of the world model created in The Master and Margarita, the famous novel written by Mikhail Bulgakov. As many critics has already noticed, there are three basic space dimensions in the considering work of prose – Jerusalem, Moscow and the mysterious world of Woland. As the matter of fact the core problem of research concerns the latter. The world from which Woland is coming is presented as a kind of inter-world between the other two, on the one hand, and as the objective Universe embracing them, creating in this way the unity of three dimensions, on the other hand. Moreover, in this piece of work, there has been made an attempt to recode the Woland’s world by analysing the motifs of it through the symbols and themes of gnosis.

The first edition of one of the most important and mysterious novels of the 20th century appeared more than fifty years ago. Despite the passage of time The Master and Margarita still enjoys popularity; it also intrigues and inspires. Until now five Polish translations of Bulgakov’s novel have appeared. It is known that the interpretation of the original might be expressed in the form of many potential texts that are communicatively equivalent. There is no doubt that it is the translator who plays a vital role in any translation; her/his personality, life experience, knowledge, skills, and also the times s/he lives in regulate the target text. That is why, no matter how many times a text is translated, the final product will always be different. Taking this into consideration, the author will compare the three Polish translations of Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita, paying attention to the diachronic perspective as far as linguistic norms are concerned, the modernity of language, and the way the anthroponyms are expressed.

This article is devoted to the issue of reflecting ideas, motifs, themes, types of protagonists and conflicts of the novel The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov in Pelevin’s novel Chapayev and Void. The central figure in Pelevin’s novel – Peter Emptiness (other versions of his name: Pyotr Pustota, Pyotr Voyd), reminds the reader of a hero from Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel – Ivan Homeless. The life situations of the respective heroes are analogous. The model of master and pupil is also an allusion to the relationship between Ivan and the Master. Pelevin’s reminiscence code also concerns the female hero Anna, who reflects Margarita as the ideal of beauty. Moreover, Pelevin seems to continue Bulgakov’s deliberations upon the evolution of Russian history, the constant and still valid conflict between the hero and Russian society. Additionally Pelevin uses the theme of spiritual initiation as the only way of escaping from the misery of Moscow’s reality

The purpose of this paper is to present the description of Woland as one of the main characters of the novel by Bulgakov 'The Master and Margarita', after gaining experience connected with the work on a new translation of this book. The study was conducted on the basis of an in‑depth analysis of the text. The author distinguishes the roles in which Woland appears in relationships with other characters, as well as mental and physical transformations which he undergoes. A lot of remarks concern the changes in stylistic register of his utterances. Moreover, the analysis includes numerous names, which the narrator himself uses in reference to the character. Finally, analogies with other authors are presented (Goethe, Gogol, Poe). The paper is an attempt at reconstructing the viewpoint represented by Woland, including the multitude of elements referring to particular philosophical, political and ethical doctrines. It all leads to the conclusion that Bulgakov’s devil is a multidimensional and ambiguos character, which doesn’t conform to any traditions and explicit interpretations.

The paper deals with the problem of the relationship between literature and the widely understood sphere of human spirituality, its significance to social life and the issue of using culture as a tool of indoctrination in a totalitarian state. It shows how public discourse on Bulgakov’s novel reflected the mechanisms of collective life in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century; how the figures-symbols functioned as carriers of fundamental moral values; and what the importance of Christian ethics was, not only for the reception of the novel in Poland, but also for the formation of certain attitudes and beliefs. This reflection concerns the role of religious themes and philosophical topics not as stand-alone semantic elements, but as factors that provoked to seek answers to the existential questions of Polish society at those times.

Artykuł podejmuje problem związków literatury z szeroko pojmowaną sferą duchowości człowieka, jej znaczenia dla życia społecznego oraz kwestię wykorzystywania kultury jako narzędzia indoktrynacji w państwie totalitarnym. Pokazuje, w jaki sposób w dyskursie publicznym na temat powieści Bułhakowa odbijały się zjawiska oraz mechanizmy życia zbiorowego lat siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych XX wieku, jak funkcjonowały w obiegu społecznym postacie-symbole, będące nośnikami podstawowych wartości moralnych, jakie znaczenie miała etyka chrześcijańska nie tylko dla recepcji powieści w Polsce, ale również dla kształtowania się wśród publiczności literackiej określonych postaw i poglądów. Refleksje dotyczą roli motywów religijnych i wątków filozoficznych nie jako autonomicznych elementów znaczeniowych, lecz czynników, które prowokowały do szukania odpowiedzi na nurtujące ówczesne społeczeństwo polskie pytania egzystencjalne.

This article is an attempt to look at Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita from the perspective of the novel’s relationship with the spiritual aspect of human life. The analysis includes press and magazine texts, as well as non-serial publications in which we could find references to the religious life of the writer or the moral status of his most famous work. Differing views of representatives of various scientific fields are also presented; not only those of theologists and scholars of religion, but also those of cultural experts, philologists, literary critics, commentators and journalists. The main goal is to present the new trends in the reception of the book which can be observed in Poland since 1989, and the article has been structured with that aim in mind. The preliminary part of the text focuses on the reception of the novel in the context of Christian ethics in the 1970s and 80s, and the changes introduced by the different socio-historical conditions after the fall of Communism. The following parts analyse the image of Bulgakov himself. At the time, the author was an important role model, seen as a continuation of the image presented by the character-symbols of his novels. The article also presents the problem of the evolution of various interpretations and evaluations of The Master and Margarita that have drifted towards their compatibility with the truth of the Gospel. Attention is also paid to the book as seen from a theological perspective, especially those of the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Its reception was also influenced by other forms of spirituality – Manichaeism, gnosticism and esotericism. All of the above have led to a presentation of its influence on modern human spiritual pursuits, and its importance in the cultural dimension.

Artykuł stanowi próbę przyjrzenia się Mistrzowi i Małgorzacie Michaiła Bułhakowa z perspektywy związków powieści z duchowym aspektem życia człowieka. Analizie poddane zostały teksty prasowe i czasopiśmiennicze oraz druki zwarte, w których pojawiają się odniesienia do życia religijnego pisarza czy moralnego statusu jego najsłynniejszego dzieła. Zaprezentowane zostały stanowiska przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych, nie tylko teologów czy religioznawców, ale także kulturoznawców, filologów, krytyków literackich publicystów i dziennikarzy. Podstawowym celem jest wyróżnienie nowych tendencji w recepcji książki, jakie można zaobserwować w Polsce po roku 1989. Temu właśnie podporządkowano strukturę artykułu. Na wstępie nakreślone zostały sposoby odbioru powieści w kontekście etyki chrześcijańskiej w latach 70. i 80. XX, następnie zaś zmiany spowodowane odmiennością warunków społeczno-historycznych po transformacji ustrojowej. W dalszej części szkicu przeanalizowano wizerunek Bułhakowa, który w okresie wcześniejszym stanowił ważny wzorzec osobowy, będąc niejako przedłużeniem obrazu powieściowych bohaterów-symboli. W szkicu podjęto także kwestię ewoluowania interpretacji i ocen Mistrza i Małgorzaty w kierunku zgodności z literą Ewangelii oraz rozpatrywania dzieła Bułhakowa w perspektywie teologicznej (zwłaszcza w ujęciu Kościoła katolickiego i prawosławnego) Nie mniej istotne dla recepcji książki okazały się także inne formy duchowości – m.in. manicheizm, gnoza czy ezoteryka. Wszystko to pozwoliło na ukazanie jej wpływu na duchowe poszukiwania współczesnego człowieka oraz uchwycenie ich wymiaru kulturowego.
