A PILOT STUDY ON THE POTENTIAL USE OF TOMATIS METHOD TO IMPROVE L2 READING FLUENCY

This was a pilot study that used the Tomatis Method to see the effects it had on L2 reading fluency in a group of Taiwanese learners. Eight volunteers participated in this study undertaking 40-hours of before-and-after-experimental treatments. The results from the analysis showed that the participants had significant improvements in the areas of fluency, tone, stress, and intelligibility. However, there was not a significant improvement in pronunciation. This study concludes that the Tomatis Method seemed to help participants improve their reading fluency as well as increase the levels of confidence and motivation when learning the target language.

W ostatnich latach w audiologii dużo uwagi poświęca się diagnostyce centralnych zaburzeń przetwarzania słuchowego. Dysfunkcje te rozpoznawane są również u osób z zaburzeniami komunikacji językowej. Istnieje zatem potrzeba stosowania skutecznych metod usprawniania percepcji słuchowej. Metoda Tomatisa jest jedną z takich propozycji. Z tego też powodu w Polsce stosuje się ją coraz częściej jako wspomaganie terapii logopedycznej. W pracy wskazano na możliwość zastosowania metody Tomatisa w terapii osób z dyslalią, opóźnionym rozwojem mowy, jąkaniem, dysleksją i dyzartrią.

In audiology over the last few years much attention is given to the diagnoses of the Central Auditory Processing Disorders. These dysfunctions are also identified in people with language disorders. There exists therefore a need for effective methods to improve auditory perception. The Tomatis method is one of such proposals. For this reason, in Poland it is used more and more often as a support for the speech therapy. The study indicates the potential use of the Tomatis method in the treatment of people with dyslalia, delayed speech development, stuttering, dyslexia, and dysarthria.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przegląd współczesnych badań zaj-mujących się wpływem stymulacji słuchowej metodą Tomatisa na takie aspekty trudności w uczeniu się zaobserwowane wśród badanych uczniów szkół podsta-wowych jak: trudności w czytaniu, komunikacji czy zachowaniu. Zaprezento-wane rezultaty wskazują na pozytywny wpływ stymulacji słuchowej na wymie-nione wyżej trudności w uczeniu się. Pozytywne efekty metody Tomatisa zostały stwierdzone zarówno, jeżeli chodzi o same rezultaty w nauce, jak i, w niektórych przypadkach, w zachowaniu badanych osób, co może stanowić potwierdzenie skuteczności tej metody w terapii służącej dzieciom mającym trudności w ucze-niu się.

The present article aims to present a short overview of recent studies researching the use of Tomatis auditory stimulation while addressing various types of learning difficulties like difficulties in reading, communication or behavior among primary school students. The results of the presented studies clearly show positive influence of the auditory stimulation on mentioned before skills. It was shown that Tomatis method seemed to improve significantly students’ learning outcomes as well as, in some cases, behavior and could be used to aid students with different kinds of learning difficulties..
