Purpose. To research the contents of polemic of uniate theologian Elijah Morochowski with Meletiy Smotrycki in the work “Paregoria albo utulenie uszczypliwego lamentu mniemaney Cerkwie Swiętey Wschodniey zmyślonego Theophila Ortologa”, concerned the question of primacy of the Pope. Methods. In the article it is used the historical and cultural, hermeneutics, comparative methods. Results. The polemical works of Elijah Morochowski reveal the importance of the primacy of the Pope in religious controversy in Rich Pospolyta in XVI‒XVII centuries. The report deals with the different ways of interpretations of the historical figures, events, the rules of Church councils by the uniate theologian Elijah Morochowski and apologist of orthodox church Meletiy Smotrycki. It is researched the cultural contacnts catholics, uniates with the orthodox theologians in the Rich Pospolyta, that is fixed in polemical texts of Ukrainian, Polish literatures. It is analyzed the sources of argumentation, the ways of communication of the controversialist with the opponent, pointed to means of persuasion, the methods of interpretation of Holy Bible.
The article presents the writings of Jakub Susza (Jacob Susha, c. 1610– 1687), the Uniate bishop of Chełm 1652–1687. His most important works: the Latinbiographies of Josaphat Kuntsevych (Cursus vitae et certamen martyrii b. Iosaphat Kuncevicii..., Rome 1665) and Meletius Smotrytsky (Saulus et Paulus Ruthenae Unionis sanguine beati Iosaphat transformatus sive Meletius Smotriscius..., Rome 1666) and the history of the revered icon of Our Lady of Chełm (Phoenix redivivus albo obraz starożytny chełmski Panny i Matki Przenajświętszej, Zamość 1646, Lvov 1653, Zamość 1694), all represent little-known literature written within the Uniate Church. Jakub Susza’s intellectual development, his education in Jesuit colleges in Braniewo, Pultusk and Olomouc, and the characteristic features of his works (the consistent use of Polish and Latin as literary languages, the use of western Latin and Polish literary models) contribute to his image as an example of latinisation and occidentalisation (which at that time meant polonisation) of higher Uniate clergy in the Commonwealth, though as a bishop he took care to preserve the religious identity of the Eastern church.
The reception of relations between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches by the Ukrainian national consciousness was largely formed by a romantic myth. It appeared in the works by Taras Shevchenko, in the documents of the the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius. According to this myth, the Church Union of Brest (1596) was the result of the colonial policy of the Polish government and the intrigues of the Jesuit priests. In fact, the influence of the royal administration on the religious life of the inhabitants of the Polish-Lithuanian state was extremely limited. „Henrician Articles” of 1573 forced the king to adhere to religious tolerance and to recognize the nobility’s right to free choice of religion. The Roman Catholic clergy, for the most part, did not want to grant Christians the Eastern rite of parity. The Society of Jesus, which formed a separate province in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1574, was guided not by political but by religious motives. Benedict Herbest (1531–1598) already in his work „Wypisanie drogi” („The Desribing of The Way”, 1566) discusses the prospect of restoring unity with the Orthodox Ruthenians. In the book „Wiary Kościołu Rzymskiego wywody” („The Arguments of the Roman Church’ Belief”) he explains Ruthenia’s departure from unity with Rome by lack of education and low religious consciousness. Piotr Skarga (1536–1612) wrote the book „O jedności Kościoła Bożego” („About the God’s Church’s Unity”, 1577), when he had not great authority in the Church and when he was little known in society. At the Brest synod in 1596 Skarga was not a participant and organizer, but only an observer and chronicler. Both Herbest and Skarga were only inflammatory polemicists who responded to the challenge of the Reform by calling for the consolidation of the Church in a single organism. The romantic myth is refuted by a closer acquaintance with their works and life experience.
The death of a sinner in Orthodox polemical literature of the era of the Union of Brest In the Orthodox polemics of the end of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century, sinners, dying of a “bad death”, are most often apostates from the faith (bishops who joined the Union of Brest), converts, and religious dissenters, especially persecutors of the Orthodox Сhurch, and those committing sacrilege and blasphemy. Descriptions of their miserable deaths are based on a traditional Old East Slavic schema, but they have a particular, less universal dimension. They generally act as cautionary examples, which are referred to when discussing current issues (the dispute over the legality of the Synod of Brest, the controversy over the acquisition of temples and properties, the debate over the calendrical reform, and the apologetics and defence of Orthodox sanctuaries, icons, and relics). In all cases, the death of a sinner (Uniate, Catholic or Protestant) becomes the final confirmation that the Orthodox author is right, as well as the evidence of the sanctity of his tradition, and the sign of condemnation of the religious dissenters.

Zidentyfikowano 22 znanych z imienia kapłanów unickich, a dodatkowo 4 popów, którzy prawdopodobnie byli unitami. Rozpoznani popi uniccy stanowili zaledwie około 2% wszystkich popów (zarówno unickich, jak i prawosławnych) z obszaru eparchii. Jednakże w stosunku do wszystkich funkcjonujących wówczas cerkwi unickich jest to znaczący odsetek parafii unickich. W omawianym okresie zdecydowana większość cerkwi i duchowieństwa eparchii przemysko-samborskiej nadal była prawosławna. Mimo to w wyniku kwerendy zidentyfikowano zaledwie 19 znanych z imienia kapłanów prawosławnych i 8 prawdopodobnie prawosławnych.

Orthodox bishop of Przemysl and Sambor Michał Kopysteński (1591-1609) did not join the union of Brest in 1596. Therefore, the Przemyśl-Sambor Emparchy did not have Greek-Catholic bishop until 1609, when Atanazy Krupecki was nominated. The article presents the history of the first phase of the church union in Przemyśl-Sambor eparchy (1596-1609). This issue has been poorly explored in historiography. Many historians thought that before 1609, the Eparchy of Przemyśl-Sambor had no Greek-Catholic priests and Greek-Catholics. This view has been verified. Also the myth that the Greek-Catholic Church initially consisted only of bishops, and was deprived of ecclesiastical structures and followers was challenged. The Church Union of Brest was supposed to combine the two Churches - Catholic and Orthodox. As a result of non-acceptance of the Union by the two bishops and a large part of the Orthodox faithful, there were formed two parallel structures of the Eastern Church: Orthodox and Greek-Catholic. This complex legal and religious situation forced the Orthodox popes of the Przemyśl-Sambor Eparchy to face the choice between the Ortodox Church or acceptance of ecclesiastical union. The latter was equivalent with the conversion from the Orthodox to the Greek Catholic denomination. Following the adoption of the Union of Brest state authorities outlawed the Orthodox Church, and recognized as the only legitimate one the Greek-Catholic Church. Pope recognizing the authority of the Metropolitan of Kiev, which was of Greek-Catholic denomination, had to object to his hitherto Orthodox bishop. Moreover, the bishops and priests who did not accept the union of church, were excommunicated by metropolitan of Kiev. An important role in determining denomination of a particular parish had landowners of lands where churches were located. The landowner (the king, the nobles and the clergy) was called. "Ktitor", and had the right to choose a pope. After 1596, decisions on filling the church by the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic priests were taken in accordance with the principle of cuius regio, eius religio. Union developed gradually throughout the Przemyśl-Sambor Eparchy thanks to the support of ktitors. This graduall evolutionary development of the union was followed by natural generational changes that took place in the individual parishes. No information was found on Orthodox priests forcibly removed and replaced by the Greek-Catholics. From 1598 to 1609 Greek-Catholic popes are confirmed in seven decanates of the eparchy, mostly in the towns and villages belonging to the king and Stanisław Stadnicki from Żmigród. Identified were 22 known by name Greek-Catholic priests, plus four popes who were probably of Greek-Catholic denomination. Recognized popes accounted for only about 2% of all priests (both Greek-Catholics and Orthodox) from the eparchy. However, for all Greek-Catholic churches operating at that time this is a significant percentage of the Greek-Catholics parishes. These figures have not been known in historiography yet. During this period, the vast majority of churches and clergy of the Przemyśl-Sambor Eparchy remained Orthodox. Nevertheless, only 19 known by the name Orthodox priests and eight who were probably Orthodox were identified as a result of a query. The number of identified Greek-Catholic and Orthodox priests are comparable, although on the Orhodox should be much more information in the sources. There was also found information about 12 known by name popes who lived by 1596 but there was no hints about their attitude to the union and 18 popes from the period after 1596, whose denomination can not be determined. Orthodox churches served by popes known by name were of a minor percentage of the total number of operating the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches. So far, historians have failed to determine the number of churches that existed in that period in the Przemyśl-Sambor eparchy and all data are based on estimations. Therefore, creation of an inventory of the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches is an important research proposal. Another objective should be to determine the number of priests serving in those churches. The article shows religious specificity of Przemyśl-Sambor Eparchy over 13 years (1596-1609). Most of the processes had not been completed in that period, so they should be considered in the long term. The final adoption of the church union between 1691 and 1693 ended disputes among Orthodox and Greek-Catholics in the Eparchy of Przemyśl-Sambor.
In the domain of a religious language, choices and valorizations are always made from the point of view of symbols and carriers of a particular culture and a all times are a declaration of ideological appurtenance. The article presents the process of formation of the Church language first as a personal norm of saint Cyril, then its transformation into a social norm and afterwards the recognition of Church Slavonic as a determinant of indigenousness. The most important thing in using a religious language is not complete and literal understanding of the message, but the certitude of participation in the traditional culture. That is why the attempts to modernize the cult in the name of comprehension of the message is in most cases ineffective.
The article investigates the peculiarities of the interpretation of faith as a quintessence in the conceptual world view of writers-polemists of the Early Baroque epoch. It is clarified that religious and literary controversy was caused by the adoption of the Union of Brest. In Ukrainian society, in fact, there was a schism between the supporters of different religious denominations into those who supported or rejected the Union. Therefore, the aim of the polemists was to establish the veracity of faith. The works of M. Smotrytskyj, Ch. Filalet, and H. Potij are created in accordance with the conceptual space of polemical literature of the Early Baroque epoch and represent diametrically opposed opinions on the interpretation of the Union. M. Smotrytskij and Ch. Filalet are against the Union and Catholicism, and as such express the idea of the necessity to protect the Greek Orthodox Church. Against this view, H. Potij demonstrates solidarity with the conception of the supporters of the Union, which contradicts the main ideas of M. Smotrytskij and Ch. Filalet. However, the concept of faith as the main condition of Christian life and the manifestation of spiritual values of personality acquires the highest axiological characteristic in the works of the polemists. Faith is the dominant philosophical and ideological category of the conceptual world view of the writers, a peculiar key to the implementation of the authors’ position in the controversy. The ideological sense of their works, which is embodied in religious concepts, represents the peculiarities of the outlook of the Early Baroque epoch. In the works of the polemists, the first priority is faith, which is God’s gift and creates existential dimensions of personality. Actually, faith is conceived as the basis of human life and the formation of a mentally conscious and value-oriented nation.
The short study is devoted to the person of Athanasius of Brest, one of the most prominent Orthodox priests and religious activists of the 17th century, seen in the light of his only work, Diary (Дыярыуш, 1646). The paper attempts to analyse Athanasius’ dis-uniate mission as a consequence of his own prophetic creation, belief in supernatural visions and radical passion for the Orthodox traditionalism, described in his book. It appears that the key place in the work of Athanasius is occupied by the Icon of Virgin Mary of Kupiatycze, the sacred image regarded by the monk not only as a source of grace for his Apostolic ministry, but also as a sign of the real identity of the Orthodox Church. Athanasius’ social activity turns out to be important for understanding the controversies surrounding the Union of Brest.
The article discusses the large sections of a 17th-century iconostasis hitherto unknown to scholars and the conservation services, which have been discovered in the attic of the filial Orthodox church of St John the Theologian in Nowoberezowo (Hajnówka district). It is the earliest extant iconostasis in the Podlachia region and most probably one of the oldest in the lands of the former Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. Its discovery was made during inventorying procedures carried out by the Catalogue of the Monuments of Art in Poland. An analysis of the records of church visitations from the years 1727, 1759 and 1784 has made it possible to trace the transformations in the structure of the iconostasis in the course of the 18th century and to propose its conjectural reconstructions in the condition it had in the early 18th century and after 1771.

Artykuł omawia odnalezione na strychu cerkwi filialnej św. Jana Teologa w Nowoberezowie (pow. hajnowski) nieznane nauce i służbom konserwatorskim duże fragmenty pochodzącego z ok. 2.–3.
The article presents in abbreviation the context of the Union of Florence in 1439 between the Catholic Church in the West and the Orthodox Church in Greece. It is a presentation according to the “Memoires” of Silvester Syropoulos, a clerk associated to Hagia Sofia. He belonged to the adversaries of this union. He signed it, as many bishops, under emperor’s pressure. Emperor John VIII Paleologos supported the project of union with the West in the hope of military support against the Turks. In fact, the governors of the West (pope and kings) were not able to grand such a support to Greece, even if they tried to do it. The fall of Constantinople (1453) harmed relationship between the Latin and Greek Churches. The Union of Florence concerned Polish Kingdom because on its territory lived many people of orthodox rite. The Union of Florence is considered in Poland as preparation for the Union of Brest (1596).

Artykuł przedstawia w skrócie przebieg obrad Soboru w Ferrarze i Florencji, które zostały zakończone podpisaniem unii pomiędzy Kościołem katolickim a greckim Kościołem prawosławnym w 1439 roku.

400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Jozafat Kuncewicz is an op-portunity to look at the bishopʼs activities in Polotsk. The author of the article begins presenting the reforming activity of Archbishop Josaphat by depicting historical conditions of the Polotsk diocese in the beginning of the 16th century. He emphasizes the need for reforms in the spiritual and moral field. This church at the time was in a state of deep economic, moral and spiritual crisis. The Archbishop focused on raising the intellectual and moral level of the clergy through diocesan synods, promoting the Catechism and the rules of priestly life. He targeted vices such as drinking, gambling addiction, and greed. He demanded his priests follow the rules of priestly life proper to the Church. Josaphat also undertook the work of moral and religious upliftment of the lay faithful. He used sermons and personal dialogue as a tool to combat widespread religious ignorance. He encouraged people to go to confession frequently and regularly participate in the Eucharist. The article draws on materials from the beatification and canonization process of St. Josaphat and the most important studies of the Saintʼs biography in Polish. The author emphasizes the relevance of Saint Josaphat’s reforming methods. He highlights the value of dialogue as an effective tool of evangelization.

In the year 2016 we celebrate the 420th anniversary of the Union of Brest. As a result of its signing there arose Greek Catholic Church which plays an important role in spiritual, cultural and political history of Belarus. In connection with the anniversary, the author wonders how this event is viewed by Belarusian historians, philosophers, culturologists and Church figures. Within the framework of the article, on the one hand, the author provides some points of view of those scientists who consider that Greek Catholic Church is a national church of the Belarusian people. On the other hand, there are some arguments of obvious opponents of the Uniatism who in their turn think that this confession is uncongenial to the Belarusians and provides threat to the Orthodoxy. It becomes obvious that civilization antagonism of the East and West influences the position of scientists greatly. Also the problem of the Uniatism frequently complicates the contacts between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. In a certain sense it is a challenge for ecumenical dialogue.

W 2016 r. przypada 420 rocznica ogłoszenia Unii Brzeskiej. Dlatego też stanowi on wyzwanie dla dialogu ekumenicznego.
Starodruk, opatrzony adnotacjami samego Pocieja i ofiarowany przebywającemu wówczas w Rzymie francuskiemu biskupowi Jacques’owi Davy Du Perronowi, odzwierciedla zarówno koncepcje eklezjologiczne ruskiego biskupa włodzimierskiego i jego pragnienie wpisania unijnej polemiki w szerszy kontekst wyznaniowy, daleko poza granicami Rzeczypospolitej.

Until now, the mission carried out in Rome by the Ruthenian bishops Hipacy Pociej and Cyryl Terlecki between November 1595 and March 1596 was mainly known by a few scattered notes and reports left by the various members of the Curia, which were brought together in the second half of the 20th century in sources editions of Atanasij Velykyj. This is why the Ruthenian psalter found in the library of Évreux (Normandy) offers a new perspective on this founding stage of the Union of Brest. The book annotated by the hand of Pociej himself and offered to the French bishop Jacques Davy Du Perron, who was then in Rome, reflects both the ecclesiological conceptions of the Ruthenian bishop of Volodymyr and his desire to place the unionist polemic in a wider confes-sional context, well beyond the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The apparent failure of this initiative also comes as a testimony to the challenges faced by supporters of local Unions from the post-Tridentine period.
The jubilee of the session of the Collegiate Chapter of Łuków on the occasion of its 25th anniversary was an opportunity to recall the spiritual heritage of the blessed martyrs of Pratulin. It also became an obligation for the canons of this chapter to disseminate it. And this heritage is: life according to the Gospel, courageous profession of faith, evangelical hierarchy of values, faithfulness in small things, love of the Church and the Homeland.

Andrzej Bobola lived and served at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. He was born in 1591 in Strachocin, near Sanok. And although his family was connected with the Sanok area, he spent most of his life in the north-eastern part of the I Republic of Poland, in the cities and towns of Braniewo, Vilnius, Pułtusk, Nieśwież, Bobruisk, Połock, Warsaw, Łomża, Pinsk and Janów Poleski. When the seventeenth-century struggles of our homeland with the external (Turkey, Sweden and Moscow) and the internal enemies (Cossacks) brought a time of trial for the Catholic Church and its priests, especially for the Jesuits, Andrzej Bobola showed great patriotism and dedication to the Church. Until the last moment, he behaved like an exceptional disciple of Christ. His strength of spirit prevailed in the following generations of Poles, of which he is the Patron. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the political-socio-religious situation of the 17th century.
