Migrations of the Norsemen, which took place in the early Middle Ages, led to an emergence of new social formations, operating also outside Scandinavia, including “Polish” territories. These formations can be defined as diasporas or transethnic social spaces as part of the transmigration and transnational paradigms, developed with respect to sociology.
The Vikings and their culture continue to fascinate thousands of people around the world and provide inexhaustible inspiration for numerous works of art, literature, music and film in which the archaeological, historical and mythological motifs from the North are reused in a creative way. Over the last 20 years the interest in the Vikings and their times has been growing at a rapid pace also in Poland where various re-enactment groups gather both young and senior enthusiasts from very diverse social backgrounds. Contemporary Vikings meet at early medieval markets, festivals and other events to trade, fight and experience a life of adventurers, merchants and warriors. The re-enactment scene has now grown so large that for some people ‘being Viking’ has become not only an exciting pastime, but actually their major occupation and a way of life. This paper contextualises and critically explores the fascinating history of this phenomenon and the lifestyles of contemporary Vikings in Poland.
Skandynawowie we wczesnym średniowieczu, a później Inuici zasiedlali ziemie opuszczone, ziemie niczyje.

The pursuit of independence is deeply rooted in the soul of the inhabitants of Greenland. The difference in the approach to this problem amounts to the establishment of the time and the conditions on the basis of which Greenland is supposed to become independent. The island, which is the greatest island in the world, has huge deposits of minerals, including metals of rare-earth metals and uranium. On the one hand, complete independence may be an opportunity for the development for the inhabitants but on the other hand, independence may also become a source of numerous dangers. Is Greenland, a country with a slight native population, able to cope – in terms of organisation and the available staff – with the expansion of foreign capital, including the great numbers of foreign workers who are engaged in the development of industrial infrastructure? Is it not better to continue the status quo – a relationship (even a loose one) with Denmark, and thus a relationship with the European Union? A close relationship with the EU and the NATO may, in the future, be consistent with the interests of Greenlanders. In the remote and in the most recent past, Greenland was colonised by the peoples of the Far North (paleo-Eskimo and Eskimo peoples) and Scandinavians. Both Scandinavians – in the early Middle Ages – and subsequently the Inuit populated abandoned lands, lands which belonged to no one. To put it explicitly, no one stole land from anyone. Therefore it is important that in the discussion about the problem of independence which continues between Greenlanders and Danes one should not place historical problems as questions which render dialogue difficult.
Aethelflaed (ca. 870–918) was the daughter of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex. The times in which she lived were for the future England extremaly difficult. Though in the decisive year of 878 her father defeated one of the Viking leaders, Guthrum, in the battle of Edington and this victory brought the Anglo-Saxons a couple of years of peace, the northern and eastern part of the country was still under Viking rule. The primarily purpose of this paper is to present the achievements of Aethelflaed. No doubt she inherited her father’s character and determination to completely eliminate the Vikings from England. After the passing of her husband, ealdorman Aethelred of Mercia, she alone ruled Mercia, which for a women was quite unusual in her times. Together with her brother Edward the Elder she continued the construction of burhs, a project started by Alfred. Among other victories in 917 she managed to recapture Derby, one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. Unfortunately, Aethelflaed’s sudden death in 918 stopped these successes. However, the memory of her deeds survived generations.

Bez wątpienia odziedziczyła po ojcu siłę charakteru i determinację, by całkowicie usunąć wikingów z Anglii.
