This article is a political, not economic, analysis. The author attempts to look at the effects of the latest economic crisis from an external point of view and tries to answer the elementary question – what effects has the collapse of the world markets after September 2008 had on the global political arena. Have there been any deeper changes of values, and if so, what do they consist of? The leitmotif of this text is the new role of China in the international arena, apparently strengthened after 2008. What does this new, stronger, more assertive China bring to the world? Does it have its own model to offer? And what may be the consequences of its new role in the political and economic arenas of the globalised world?

The present article is devoted to the most important issue of international relations today, i.e. the global financial crisis which started in 2007 in the USA and at the turn of 2008 and 2009 engulfed almost the whole world, including Poland. It quickly led to a deep economic crisis in many countries. The economies of the developed countries fell into a very strong recession phase and reported considerable decrease in GDP; the development in most of the rising economies was suddenly hindered. The aim of the article is to try to show the circumstances, origins, characteristic features and the range of the crisis and its consequences for Poland, especially its economic and social effects. With the use of a comparative analysis method the author tries to highlight the similarities and differences between the present crisis and the global crisis of 1929-1933, and its course of events in the United States and other states, and based on that he discusses the situation of Poland and anti-crisis measures undertaken by the government and the opposition. The author draws interesting conclusions, i.e. he proves that thanks to the loyal co-operation of all the states the crisis may be defeated soon, although its social and political results will be still perceptible in the world for a long time. Moreover, if the strategy adopted by the government succeeds, Poland has a chance to recover from the crisis as a stronger and more competitive country. The article was based on a wide source background. The author used statistics from specialist literature as well as home and foreign press and journals.

An analysis of the process of globalization enables an estimation of the benefits and losses that can affect the stability of the world economic order. The basic influences on the system of world economy include a variety of socio-economic and civilizational-cultural issues. Among them of special importance in recent years is the asymmetry in the development of particular countries and consequences of the world crisis for financial globalization. The presented considerations show that it is difficult to trace a clear boundary between the benefits and hazards that result from globalization. The building of harmony in world economy is hampered by the fact that globalization is as yet incomplete and unfinished. Moreover, numerous political, social and economic problems emerge, the overriding one being the improvement of the fate of two billion people who live in poverty. Unfortunately, there is at present no one universal mechanism that would eventually eliminate the hazards entailed by globalization and stabilize the world's economic system.

The main focus of the article is to examine the position and role of ethics in the economically and politically globalised modern world. No one questions the necessity of ethical behaviour in all kinds of human activity, both in business and politics. Actions, however, are not always consistent with moral principles. The ever-expanding system of parliamentary democracy and market economy poses new challenges for individuals, societies and governments. Ethical issues are frequently subordinated to the overriding objective of solving current problems. At times, there is tacit approval of unethical conduct. The scale of this phenomenon increases as a result of globalisation. The 2007-2009 crisis highlighted the strength of globalisation processes and their interconnectedness. It also demonstrated the consequences of violating ethical standards (mainly by financial institutions). The growing debt of the global economy is a burden for future generations, and is caused by mistakes partly stemming from unethical behaviour. The spread of unethical practices is becoming one of the most acute problems of the modern world.
