In the article I analyze how the concept of “Ukraine between East and West” is reflected in the contemporary literary texts by an example of three monographs on Valery Shevchuk’s prose. The authors of these monographs define Valeriy Shevchuk’s prose as a synthesis of elements derived from the Ukrainian traditions and folklore, as well as from trends and tendencies of Western literature.

China-Jewish relations were highly influential as a factor of China stance in the international arena in both 20th and 21st century. “Meeting” points between Judaism and Confucianism - the most important philosophical systems for Jews and Chinese - were visible within centuries. In the 20th century – after both states reaching the independence - political situation in the region and in the international arena (Cold War) highly influenced both the PRC`s and Israel`s foreign policy and their relations of course. It was highly visible in the 1950`s and 1960`s years in the 20th century. Finally, the most important moment of bilateral relations was China`s “opening to the world” (Deng Xiaoping policy), combined with an economical success and - caused by that - high dependence on sources of energy from the Middle East. That made Chinese-Israeli highly important and led to a reengagement of diplomatic relations between in 1992.
The article explores intercultural differences between East and West throughout cultural dimensions and literature. Already existing sociological research is supplemented with literary one, thus creating a modern way of performing research in the field of interculture. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions became the basis of the presented research as well as literary texts originally written in English, whose plot is set in the selected Muslim countries (Iran and Afghanistan).

Siberia, exile, wandering, captivity – there are an experiences accompanying the another generations of Poles, who were affected by the oppressive policy of the eastern neighbor of our country – Russia (USSR). Independently from the historical forms of power that had been governed over the Neva or the Kremlin, the Polish fates in the East bring to mind most often these martyrological pages of the history of the native. In fact, the repressions suffered by many Poles from the Russian (and Soviet) state were so severe that it is difficult to make other associations. The first generation of Polish exiles in Siberia was found themselves there in the XVIIIth century after defeat of the Bar Confederation. The next, significant in terms of numbers the deportations, became a consequence of further lost XIXth century national uprisings, and in the last decades of the annexation era, they were the result of underground and revolutionary activity undertaken by later generations of Poles. Twentieth century history is an another chapter – mass repressions against Poles-citizens of the USSR in the 1930s, exiles and deportations of the inhabitants of the Second Polish Republic during World War II, or imprisonment in the camps of the „GULAG archipelago” in the post-war Stalinist period is an era of brutal dissent of the totalitarian regime with Poles. A tsar’s deportations, or even a captivity, is something completely different from the Stalinist gulags, prisons and exile. They are connected only by the geographical direction – East.

The cultural concepts of Wschód (East) and Zachód (West) are products of contemporary, modern Polish languaculture, one that significantly shapes contemporary social and political discourses. A reconstruction of the cognitive definitions of these concepts, along with their profiles, can thus lead to a better understanding of the two kinds of discourse. In accordance with the principles of the cognitive definition, couched within the framework of the Lublin Ethnolinguistic School, the analysis is based on data from dictionaries, texts, and questionnaires. Four major dictionaries of Polish have been surveyed, as well as questionnaires conducted for the 1990 and 2000 editions of the Axiological Lexicon, along with a random selection of texts from the National Corpus of Polish, from internet editions of the press, from belles-lettres, and essays. After a detailed analysis of the systemic data, facet-based cognitive definitions of the two cultural concepts are constructed. For the concept of Wschód (East), the facets include location, economy, reasons for going East and returning, the role of East for Poland, the characteristics of its inhabitants and of the East as space. In the case of Zachód (West), instead of inhabitants and space, the relevant facet is that of values. The last part of the article prosents the profiles of these concepts, which correlate with ideological orientations in the press and in politics: the liberal profile (the West is good, it is associated with personal freedom, human rights, democracy and the rule of law; the East is negative, it ignores the rule of law and standards of liberal democracy); the right-wing profile (the East is evaluated similarly to the liberal profile, whereas the West is portrayed as Poland’s “moral debtor”); the Catholic-national profile (the East is a threat, the West is characterised by materialism and a degradation of values); the everyday-living profile (the West is wealthy, the East is poor).

Pojęcia Wschodu i Zachodu stanowią wytwór nowożytnej i nowoczesnej polskiej lingwokultury, który w istotny sposób kształtuje dyskursy o sprawach społecznych i politycznych. W odniesieniu do Zachodu miejsce cech mieszkańców i przestrzeni zajęły wyznawane wartości. W ostatniej części tekstu odtworzone zostały profile badanych pojęć, korelujące z orientacjami ideologicznymi w prasie i polityce: profil liberalny (pozytywnie wartościujący Zachód, utożsamiany z wolnościami jednostki, prawami człowieka, demokracją i rządami prawa, negatywnie oceniający Wschód, któremu przypisuje ignorowanie praworządności i standardów demokracji liberalnej), prawicowy (podobnie oceniający Wschód, zaś Zachód przedstawiający jako „moralnego dłużnika” Polski), katolickonarodowy (negatywnie nastawiony do Wschodu, postrzeganego jako zagrożenie, oraz Zachodu, któremu przypisuje materializm i upadek wartości), a także profil bytowy (utożsamiający Zachód z zamożnością, a Wschód z ubóstwem).
Within the short period of time between the years 339 and 373, Alexandria witnessed to a frequent use of the armed forces with an eye to removing the current bishop or enthronement of another, who had been approved of by the imperial court. Local administration officials and army officers were made use of in order to execute the current ruler’s orders.
The aim of the article is to interpret Andrzej Stasiuk's literary journeys to the East from the perspective of the sociology of emotions. Motives of the journey, the names of feelings that Stasiuk uses in his journey to the East and the emotions he assigns to the Other, as well as the manner of their expression and contextualization were examined. The imagined and experienced East is presented in relation to sadness, fear and nostalgia, which fits in the context of experiencing communism and traveling to peripheral, non-touristic places. The findings motivate treating literature as a culturally significant source of data for exploring feeling rules and emotional regimes expressed by the author and characters.

Artykuł przedstawia „spotkania” z życiem i twórczością Johannesa Bobrowskiego (1917-1965).
In the article I look at the confrontation between East and West in the works of Andrzej Stasiuk through the context of post colonialism – both understood as an original cultural diagnosis and as a method of reading the writer’s works. Firstly, mythologizing “little homeland”, secondly, designing “the great motherland” of Central Europe, Stasiuk finally made a step toward describing and confronting Polish (Slavic, Central European) and German (Western) cultural and psychological experience (plays Night. Slavo-Germanic medical tragifarce, Dark Woods and the quasi-travelogue book Dojczland). The latter works are examples of cross-border stories in which ethnic clichés (auto- and heterostereotypes) resulting from centuries-old relationship became not only the main literary subject but also a creative method, with the help of humour and irony, as well as provocation.

Po okresie mityzacji „małej ojczyzny”, następnie konstrukcji Stasiukowej „wielkiej ojczyzny” Europy Środkowej, nastąpił w twórczości pisarza etap opisujący i konfrontujący polskie (słowiańskie, środkowoeuropejskie) i niemieckie (zachodnie) doświadczenie kulturowe i psychologiczne (sztuki Noc.

The paper gives insight into the subject of culturally different ways of war-making. The objective is to further examine armed conflict in different societies and cultures. By analyzing key parameters and variables of the concept of war and strategy, the paper puts into focus cultural differences between the ways of making war by prominent military organizations. Unlike other publications, which elaborated in detail key features of warfare between various culturally different societies throughout history, this paper puts stress on strategy. Strategic culture is the dominant factor which decides how the society wages war.
For the last decade Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose has focused on description and interpretation of the author’s numerous journeys to central and Eastern European countries, the Balkans and Asia. He talks about them with his characteristic literary disposition, thus creating a specific genre which can be defined as ‘a wanderer’s diary’ or ‘travel story’. In such works as Going to Babadag (2006), There are no expresses by the yellow roads (2013) or The East (2014), the relational layer maintained in the convention of literary reportage co-exists in an active way with the reflective layer, the artistic projection of which is the clearly marked cultural and spatial nature and the teleology of dynamic existence within its frame requires intellectual mobility in comparing distinguishing features of the Oriental and Occidental cultural systems. The author is clearly in favour of the former – it is the basic territory of his existence as a human being and an artist. Andrzej Stasiuk’s philosophy of mobility marked by nomadic thinking obviously clashes with the desire for balance in the world and his intellect rejects both the opportunity of ‘an escape to the utopia’ and acceptance of what is happening in his territory.

The Crusades were the first circumstance to demonstrate the cultural religious differences that divided the Germanized West from the Byzantine East. The barbarization of the West had ushered in a feudal military society which sought to justify its habitual pasttime. The Germanic code of civalry gave preeminence to the military hero; in this regard, the papacy itself was barbarized; there was nothing more disconcerning to the Christian of the Byzantine empire than the papal warfere and the idea of Crusade. The Byzantines, in contrast, did not consider death in battle glorious; nor did they they believe that being killed in the field by the infidel was martyrdom. The canons of the Orthodox Church stated that any one guilty of kiling in war must refrain for three years from taking Holy Communion as a necessary sign of true repentance.
W Pielgrzymce Childe Harolda (1812–1818) Lord Byron pisze o Albanii: Kraina Albanii! pozwólcie, że zwrócę moje oczy / ty, surowa pielęgniarko dzikich mężczyzn! Ta jedna z najbardziej niezapomnianych wizyt w tym regionie została uwieczniona w portrecie Thomasa Phillipsa Portret lorda Byrona w albańskim stroju (1813).

n Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812–1818), Lord Byron writes these verses on Albania: “Land of Albania! let me bend mine eyes / on thee, thou rugged nurse of savage men!” One of the most memorable visits to the region, eternally immortalized in Thomas Phillips’ Portrait of Lord Byron in Albanian Dress (1813), Lord Byron’s evocation in this poem presents a commonplace perspective on the region as a land of savage men, a view further reinforced by the Balkans’ bloody history and one which has been internalized by its inhabitants as well. Lord Byron’s evocation is echoed by other Western visitors like Edith Durham and Edward Lear who in 1848 writes that, in Albania there is “luxury and the inconvenience, on the one hand, liberty, hard living and filth on the other.” Although these statements contain fragments of truth, especially pertaining to the luxurious landscape and the poverty of rural areas, an orientalist lens, as defined by Edward Said, is also at work. Here, the West defines the East as the other, a place of savage wilderness which has been slowly erased by industrialization in their home countries. The particular danger of this perspective lies in its absorption and perpetuation by the region itself. Art that focuses on topics like blood feuds and sworn virgins (Broken April by Ismail Kadare and Sworn Virgin by Elvira Dones are only a few examples) are the most successful in receiving financial support and international acclaim, thus enabling their continuation and proliferation of the Romantic idea of the country as an exotic and dangerous place.
