Parafia uniejowska należała do nielicznych w Polsce parafii o wieloosobowej obsadzie plebańskiej.

In the 15th century, the Uniejów parish was one of a few parishes in Poland which had two parsons: one who took care of parishioners living in the town, and the other – of parishioners in rural areas. The paper characterizes the 15th century group of Uniejów parish priests as well as addresses a broader issue of parishes with more than one priests, including property regulations and mutual relations between the parsons.
It is estimated that humanism first emerged in Poland in the first decades of the 15th century or at the beginning of the 16th century at the latest. The estimation depends on the definition of the phenomenon, the source material, and the methodology applied. The present article focuses on the issues that arise when attempting to define the exact moment humanism started to develop as an intellectual and cultural movement and also the issue of deciding on its early ‘markers’. What is more, it draws attention to non-literary sources that might facilitate the establishing of the watershed moment, yet at the same time pose some difficulties that might arise with their application. According to the thesis presented in the article, the first traces of humanist inclinations among Poles do not fully correspond with the emergence of humanism as a broader phenomenon. On the other hand, it is postulated that the point of inception of Polish humanism does not necessarily need to be synonymous with the movement’s dominance in all spheres of intellectual culture. It is concluded that it is difficult to establish the exact date of the emergence of humanism in Poland. The definition of such a watershed moment should rather be defined in terms of generational change and as such can be placed in a wide time bracket between the 1430s and the 1460s.

The court banner was composed of courtiers, called horse courtiers (curienses). Court banner was an elite formation, a private military unit of the king. According to the register written in the last years of the 15th century, after the Moldavian expedition, 60 riders were standing in the ranks of the banner, standing at the head of their retinues, the majority of which ranged from 4 to 6 riders. In total, 288 riders were recorded in the register (saved with the first hand). More than half of the riders were riders at light horses (equi sagittarii) with light armor and a crossbow. About 13% of them were lancers at heavy horses (equi hastarii). In addition, various types of horses have been registered in the register, such as: lancers horses, Tatars horses, etc. Courtiers from the court banner were nobles. Service on the court was for them the possibility of further career. The register also included courtiers (cubicularii). They served at the royal court and the court banner, along with their retinues.

One of the basic functions of the war camp was to enable the army to rest during the campaign. For this purpose, a suitable place for a stop was necessary. It must have been above the water, in a place full of firewood and horse feed. It happened that the camp was set up in a place where there was a shortage of water, or it was contaminated, then it was immediately transferred to another place. Another important function of the war camp was to ensure the security of the army in it. Because of it, the camp was sought to be located in naturally defensive places: bends, lakes, hills, etc. During the expedition, even when stopping for a short layover, the camp was surrounded by carts that formed a kind of wall. When there was a threat of attack on the camp, it was additionally surrounded by a ditch or palisade. When the army was staying longer in one place, for example, during a siege, camp’s defences were significantly strengthened by raising ramparts and building wooden towers. For example, a camp of Polish forces near Košice (now in Slovakia) in 1491 in which 12 such towers were built. The article contains information about the battles for camps. The descriptions in the sources usually refer to the attack, which is the last phase of the battle, for example after the battles at Grunwald 1410, Grotniki 1439, Varna 1444, Chojnice (Konitz) 1454, Świecino (Schwetzin) 1462. After breaking the army in the field, the victorious army attacks the camp of the defeated opponent. In such situations, the fortified camp did not happen to be defended. The camps, which were located in hard-to-reach places, and were reinforced with ramparts and towers, were difficult to obtain. To take control of them, a regular siege had to be carried out. In 1473, the army of Hungarian King Mathias Corvinus stormed the Polish camps on Upper Hungary. Eventually he managed to get one after his fortifications were destroyed by artillery fire. The second Polish camp, however, was obtained by bribing the Polish officer commanding his defense. Only once sources mention the use of carts to cover the army in motion. It was on Silesia near Wrocław (Breslau) in 1474 during the Polish and Czech war with Hungary. We have no many evidence of using special combat vehicles, of the kind used by the Hussite army, in Poland in the 15th century. In the sources, there are only sporadically: currus fossati, meaning war wagons. Polish chronicler Jan Długosz recalls that in one of the battles in Prussia in 1457 Polish mercenaries used the car delivered to them by peasants from nearby villages. Hidden behind them, they repulsed the attack of the Teutonic forces and were victorious. Many specialists from the Bohemia were sometimes involved in managing the camp and setting up camps in the Polish army. Nevertheless, the use of Czech tactics of using wagons was not quite possible, probably due to the different composition of the Polish army, the main part of which was the knight’s cavalry.

Można go znaleźć także w innych ośrodkach. Madonny z Vimperka.

The article presents the history of the statue of Virgin Mary and Child in Krzywaczka, from the fifteenth century, especially the changes it was subjected to over the centuries as a result of different unprofessional repairs. The last conservation revealed in details the range of those repairs and therefore made it possible to find a more precise date of creation and the artistic genesis of the sculpture. Despite the strong inspiration from Czech and Austrian art, the Virgin in Krzywaczka, has to be seen as the work of the Lesser Poland School. The statue of such artistry level could have been created in this region, although in this period Lesser Poland School was going through its so called transitional period. Regardless of this fact, it can be assumed that the statue in Krzywaczka copies the general rhythm of draperies of stone sculpture of the ‘Beautiful Madonna of Krumlow’, although in its later edition, more similar to this of statue from Vimperk, showing a relapse of motives common at the end of the fourteenth century and in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. Their origins can be traced back to the sculpture still in the strong connection with architecture, with the statue from Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna as the most prominent example. The author of Virgin Mary and Child in Krzywaczka must have repeated the composition of Madonna of Krumlow or Vimperk without knowing these examples, copying it from sculptures imitating those mentioned above. This type of statue was quite popular in Austria. It could also be found in other centres. Although Mary in Krzywaczka without a doubt shows an inspiration with Czech art, Austria was the most influential centre when it comes to the figure’s form. Even though currently it is not possible to find the genesis of the style directly in works of Master of Seeon, it is still right to come back to the concept of its origins coming from the way it was formed in Austria. The statue in Krzywaczka was created in a school, which was familiar with Czech art, as indicated by its similarity to – for instance – Madonna of Vimperk.
The aim of this article is to present the format of the letters written by the Kamień official and curate in spiritualibus et temporalibus (temporarily the Pomerania official as well), Szymon Maciejowic of Staw, to addressees in Prussia, namely the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order and Gdańsk councillors. Unfortunately, only seven original letters from that church dignitary survive to this day. Analysis of these letters reveals that Szymon called himself a chaplain (cappellanus) when writing letters to the aforementioned addressees. This polite term was, in fact, a synonym for ‘clergyman’. It is also worth emphasizing that Maciejowic, in order to please the recipients and win their favour, frequently addressed the Grand Masters as dukes in his letters. It should be added that addressing the head of the Teutonic Order as a duke became a fairly common diplomatic practice in Poland only after the signing of the so-called Second Treaty of Toruń in 1466.

The following article attempts to describe the appearance of Jan Długosz referring to the three images contemporary with the chronicler: a miniature (or rather its copy) coming from Vita Beatae Kunegundis of Stary Sącz, a polychrome discovered in the so-called Długosz House in Wiślica, and a low relief placed in the foundation plaque of the Psalter House in Krakow. Thanks to the analysis of the surviving images of the 15th century, it was possible to establish the most characteristic features of the chronicler’s face. The medieval portraits of Długosz differ markedly from his images created in later centuries. Thus, it can be argued that the depictions of the chronicler (an artistic interpretation) provided by Jan Ligber, Michał Stachowicz, and especially Jan Matejko – the one which a number of drawings, paintings, sculptures and medals were modelled on (Bronisław Puc, Walery Gadomski, Wacław Głowacki, Aleksander Szyndler, Florian Cynk) – bear little resemblance to Długosz’s real physical appearance.

W artykule podjęto próbę opisu wyglądu Jana Długosza na podstawie trzech wizerunków współczesnych kronikarzowi: miniatury (a raczej jej kopii) pochodzącej z starosądeckiego egzemplarza Vita Beatae Kunegundis, polichromii odkrytej w tzw. Domu Długosza w Wiślicy i płaskorzeźby z tablicy fundacyjnej Domu Psałterzystów w Krakowie. Analiza zachowanych przedstawień z XV wieku pozwoliła uzgodnić najbardziej charakterystyczne cechy zewnętrzne oblicza dziejopisarza. Średniowieczne portrety Długosza znacząco różnią się od ujęć wizerunkowych artystów wieków późniejszych, tym samym wyobrażenie postaci – twórcza interpretacja Jana Ligbera, Michała Stachowicza, a nade wszystko Jana Matejki, która stała się wzorem dla wielu grafik, rysunków, obrazów, rzeźb i medali (Bronisław Puc, Walery Gadomski, Wacław Głowacki, Aleksander Szyndler, Florian Cynk), w niewielkim stopniu oddaje prawdę o antropologii fizycznej kronikarza.
