The scope of the paper consists in presenting the linguistic image of the Catholic priest as expressed in the works of Marcin Czechowic, one of the luminaries of the Polish reformation. The aim is accomplished by means of the identification of the forms of denomination of opponents (simple, complex, explicit, implicit, neutral and marked names are distinguished), reconstruction of typical roles (God’s servant, shepherd, adversary) as well as presentation of the ways of shaping the image of the priest (both stylistic and textual). Finally, the reader’s attention is drawn to the illocutionary potential of the reconstructed image. The analysis of the historical and pragmatic context leads to the conclusion that the picture of the Catholics did perform an informational function, yet simultaneously it became a major tool of persuasion in the confessional dispute. Furthermore, it highlighted the differences between the religious community of the Polish Brethren and opponent communities, which performed both an integrative as well as organizational role.
