The author reports on the application of some findings of Peter Zajac´s genre research conducted at his former workplace (The Institute of literary and artistic communication in Nitra). The fact that they are stimulating is proven by the theoretical research of the older and middle-aged generations of the Institute (Ľ. Plesník, Z. Rédey) and, in particular, by the creative development of Zajac´s concept of „superficit – deficit“ in the current theme-focused research initiatives of the youngest generation of the Nitra literary scientists (M. Čechová).

Peter Zajac advocates the synergy approach to literature in his monographs and studies. In his opinion, literature deals with the theme of problem situations, which do not necessarily have to be crises, but also acts of anticipating and defusing a crisis. The functional sign of their presentation is the pulsatory character as an output of multidimensional nature and manifold interaction, which resulted from thematising the life world. The creativity of literature seen in this way is closely related to the dynamics of creation, construction, reading, impact of a literary work.

The paper written on the occasion of Peter Zajac´s 70th birthday looks back at his beginnings as a literary critic in the late 1960s. At that time he formed a polemic stance on the domineering discourse of the 1960s, however, from the outset of normalization in the 1970s he adopted many elements of Milan Hamada´s ethical and noetic conception. The following decades saw him mainly advocating the variety of Slovak literature and its genres. The paper characterizes the algorithm of Zajac´s cognitive methods as he developed it in his scientific writings aimed at the formation of a dynamic model. The lifelong basis of his relation to reality is the feeling of permanent crisis. It is a positive understanding of crisis as a productive situation, which makes a self-consciously reflect on each life situation and make decisions, which in effect make the system more dynamic and initiate the process of establishing functioning structures.

The paper features the writer´s memory of his first meeting with Peter Zajac as a reader and interpreter of poetry in the late 1970s and of his work on Štefan Strážay´s poetry being both initiation and inspiration. Then the paper advances in several steps: it records Zajac´s initial generational vitality of developing theories, his inclination towards existentialism in the last quarter-century; this represents the framework of „shivering aesthetics“ being currently developed by P. Zajac – also in relation to the 20th century modern poetry; what proves to be fundamental for him is the phenomenon and notion of the „noble“. It can be exemplified by the writer´s brief excursion into the „country“ in Ivan Laučík´s poetry. The actual „shivering“ of the lyric text in its making and reading is demonstrated by the last sketch of Ján Ondruš´s poem Radosť (Joy, the introductory idyll, natural-musical melancholy, the interior of solitude, the final melancholy freeze and a possible lyric catharsis, their discreet oscillations).
