Sytuacje kryzysowe są zjawiskiem naturalnym, wkomponowanym w uposażenie bytowe każdej organizacji (w tym i przedsiębiorstwa). Ich przejawem jest tzw. cykl życia przedsiębiorstwa. Mając ambiwalentne znaczenie dla funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstwa, sytuacje kryzysowe prowadzą do jego upadku albo stanowią szansę na odnowę i - tym samym - stanowią jeden z centralnych problemów w zarządzaniu nim. Zasadniczą tezą artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że profesjonalne zarządzanie przedsiębiorstwem polega na nawigowaniu cyklem jego życia dzięki zastosowaniu kombinacji reaktywnych i prospektywnych mechanizmów regulacyjnych, przeciwdziałających naturalnej tendencji do destabilizacji jego funkcji. W artykule omówiono wybrane perspektywy teoretyczne w zarządzaniu przedsiębiorstwem w sytuacjach kryzysowych, w tym podejście kauzalne, wskazując na jego potencjalną przydatność w nawigowaniu cyklem życia przedsiębiorstwa. Zakłada się bowiem, że dzięki ustawicznemu badaniu czynników zewnętrznych i wewnętrznych, oddziałujących na funkcjonowanie przedsiębiorstwa, możliwe jest budowanie sieci przyczynowo-skutkowych (sieci kauzalnych) i na tej podstawie wprowadzanie zmian, dzięki którym można utrzymać wysoki poziom jej efektywności. Ponadto podjęto polemikę w odniesieniu do dość powszechnego pojmowania terminu kryzys i czasu jego trwania. Proponuje się bowiem, aby termin kryzys traktować jedynie jako jedną z faz sytuacji kryzysowej, która ze względu na takie cechy, jak bycie punktem przełomowym, zwrotnym w cyklu życia przedsiębiorstwa nie może trwać zbyt długo.
