The article discusses the history of the Castle of Zator. Main focus is placed on oldest, and least recognized by previous researchers, part of the history of this building. The origins of the castle are strongly related with the events in the Duchy of Oświęcim, especially with its division in 1445. Manuscript of the mentioned division, survived to our times, and has become the starting point for reflection on the causes, circumstances and opportunities associated with building a castle by the relatively poor princes. While reading subsequent paragraphs we follow the career of the oldest Duke Wenceslaus I (Wacław), for whom, new residence in the capital of the newly created Duchy of Zator was built. Shortly after his death another division was made. This time Duchy of Zator became divided into two parts, designed for four sons of Duke Wenceslaus. Also in this case we are in possession of the original manuscript created in 1477. This document became the basis for the study of the structure of the earliest building of the castle of Zator. Analysis of this description showed that the previously known descriptions of the castle, from this period, contain many inconsistencies. Everything indicates that the original residence was rather modest, partly made of wood. There were located one big chamber, several smaller rooms and compartments. In addition, there were kitchen and hallway. In the earliest period, castle also had a chapel, but as time passed it disappeared. Dimensions of the castle clearly indicate limited financial possibilities of Zator’s princes.

The paper deals with the seals of the captains (starosta) in the Duchies of Oświęcim and Zator from the years 1516-1562. They allows to observe the process of the formation of the office seal (originally private seals were used to confirm official acts). The need for special seals for the affairs of those duchies was probably caused by the fact that every real estate transaction had to be confirmed by a document from the captain and the land judge.

W artykule omówiono pieczęcie kolejnych starostów księstw oświęcimskiego i zatorskiego z lat 1516-1562.

Graboszyce is a village known from thirteenth century historical records whose ownership has passed through many hands. In the fourteen century and in the first half of fifteen century, the manor may have been located in the same place where we can see today's building. It might have been a complex of wooden buildings, which have left no traces. For a long time, Graboszyce belonged to the Brandys, a family of knights who originated from the Czech lands. At the end of the fifteen century and at the beginning of the sixteenth century, Klemens Brandys is mentioned living in the manor by the Radwan crest. During his ownership, the first brick manor was built (at least the lower part was), which remains as today’s cellars. In 1565, Graboszyce belonged to Dziwisz (Dionizy) Brandys, the king`s courtier and secretary. In the years 1570-1580, he built the Renaissance mansion which still stands in the village today. The mansion was built by anonymous builders who were inspired by architects Pietro Cataneo and Sebastian Serlio. The builders of the Graboszyce Manor wanted to implement the characteristical traits for the era such as the symmetry in buildings designed by the Italian architect Santi Guci. In eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the manor went through renovations, without changing its original layout.
