Abstract The Author concentrates herself on a role of literary works and reading thereof. In relation to the above, she presents positions of experts on the issue. She is also interested in required reading in the reformed primary school. Apart from theoretical inquiries, the considerations are based on the results of a survey which was carried out among a seven-grade pupils in 2018. Due to the gathered material, the Author pays attention to an analysis of the first survey question concerning the benefit from reading literary works/ required reading for pupils. The gathered material is rich which favours carrying out a wide analysis in the light of opinions of the experts on the issue as well as applicable ministerial documents.
