St. Hedwig Parish in Detroit – on the Events of 1905 in Press Articles of that Time

The aim of the article is to describe a St. Hedwig Detroit conflict of 1905. It was one of the Polish American history events, when a group of parishioners disobeyed their pastor and the local bishop. The conflict was covered in detail by two influential journals: Detroit Free Press and The Evening News, Detroit. The article focuses on the major events of the conflict beginning with establishing the St. Hedwig Parish in Detroit in 1903, a clash between parish trustees and the pastor, excommunication of disobedient trustees by Bishop John Samuel Foley and reopening the church in August 1905. That part of St. Hedwig Parish history shows how important was the parish for the community Polish immigrants community, what was their mentality and attitude towards American reality and Roman Catholic Hierarchy in the USA. The St. Hedwig conflict of 1905 is one of the similar events which occurred in at the turn of 19th and 20th century among Polish Americans and the American Church.

Parafia św. Jadwigi w Detroit – o wydarzeniach z 1905 r. w artykułach ówczesnej prasy Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie konfliktu w parafii św. Jadwigi w Detroit w 1905 r. Jest to jeden z epizodów historii Polonii amerykańskiej, kiedy grupa parafian sprzeciwiła się przeciwko proboszczowi i lokalnemu biskupowi. Konflikt był opisywany przez dwie wpływowe gazety – “Detroit Free Press” i “The Evening News: Detroit”. Artykuł skupia się na jego głównych wydarzeniach, począwszy od ustanowienia parafii w 1903 r., poprzez zatarg między komitetem parafialnym a proboszczem, ekskomunikę nieposłusznych parafian przez biskupa J.S. Foleya, po ponowne otwarcie kościoła w sierpniu 1905 r. Ten fragment historii parafii św. Jadwigi pokazuje, jak ważna była parafia dla społeczności polskich imigrantów, jaka była mentalność i nastawienie wobec amerykańskiej rzeczywistości i rzymskokatolickiej hierarchii w USA. Konflikt z 1905 r. jest jednym z podobnych wydarzeń, mających miejsce na przełomie XIX i XX wieku wśród Polonii amerykańskiej i tamtejszego Kościoła.

The article examines the phenomenon of professionalization of political communication in the age of mediatization. The starting point in the discussion is the statement that professionalization of election campaigns is not synonymous to professionalization of political communication. The discussion is conducted from the strategic approach to communication activities undertaken by party organizations. In the first part, the hitherto recognition of the professionalization process is analyzed. The next step presents selected research methods that attempt to structure professional research. As a result of the previous research experience and undertaken analyzes, a new look at the professionalization process is suggested.

W artykule podejmuję refleksję nad zjawiskiem profesjonalizacji komunikacji politycznej w dobie przeobrażeń wynikających z procesu mediatyzacji. Stanowiskiem wyjściowym w podejmowanej dyskusji jest twierdzenie, że profesjonalizacja kampanii wyborczych nie jest równoznaczna z profesjonalizacją komunikacji politycznej w ogóle. W poniższych analizach przyjmuję perspektywę strategicznego podejścia do działań komunikacyjnych podejmowanych przez organizacje partyjne. W pierwszej części dokonuję krytycznej analizy dotychczasowego spojrzenia na proces profesjonalizacji komunikacji politycznej oraz prezentuję wybrane propozycje badawcze, które mają na celu próbę ustrukturyzowania badań profesjonalizacji. W efekcie podjętych analiz, a także na podstawie dotychczasowych doświadczeń badawczych, w drugiej części tekstu proponuję spojrzenie na proces profesjonalizacji z perspektywy sposobu organizacji działań komunikacyjnych przez partie polityczne.

The armicle analyses the changes of a Soviet man’s bodily language shown in the films of the late 1950s’ and early 1960s’. The author observes how foreign movies shown on Russian screens with great delay had been changing the bodily language of Russian film characters and the impact of a significant gender roles switch so vivid in post-war Western European and American cinemamic producmions. Getming rid of a might pattern of gesture in the world of cinema has become a phenomenon almost as important as the polimical thaw. This approach is parmicularly visible in the images of the workers’ bodies, working class people brought up in children’s homes and living in dormitories – the youth portrayed in films such as Under the Clouds, Girls, I am 20, Dima Gorin’s Career, Spring on Zarechnaya Street, Walking around Moscow. By observing the process of an on-screen change of bodily techniques one may assume that the body doesn’t have a memory of its own, and therefore imitates new techniques easily; the body keeps the memory of a gesture and acquires new habits with much dificulty. Soviet films subsequently suggest both approaches.

„Americanisation” in political campaign assumes on the one hand that all changes, techniques and campaign tools were directly taken from the United States. On the other hand, it also refl ects general developments in political policy, media and society (modernization). The main objective of this article is to examine these trends by using the example of new democracy – the Slovak Republic? The paper therefore identifi es the main characteristics of the process, but also to set an adequate methodological framework and try to explore it in the Slovak environment, specifi cally in the context of the presidential elections of 2009 and 2014.

Procesy amerykanizacji w komunikowaniu politycznym oznaczają z jednej strony przejmowanie technik i narzędzi, które są wykorzystywane w kampaniach wyborczych w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Z drugiej – odzwierciedlają ogólne zmiany w strategii politycznej, mediach i społeczeństwie (modernizacja). Głównym celem artykułu jest zbadanie tych trendów w oparciu o przykład młodej demokracji – Republiki Słowacji. W tym kontekście artykuł identyfi kuje główne cechy procesów amerykanizacji w oparciu o zdefi niowane ramy metodologiczne. Badania były prowadzone w kontekście wyborów prezydenckich na Słowacji w 2009 i 2014 roku.
