Identity Development in Small Ethnic Communities in Bulgaria

This paper deals with the issue of identity development of Bulgarian Muslims – one of the minorities in Bulgaria. The basic assumption is that their ethnic (collective) identity has been developed as multiple identities under the primordial, modern, and postmodern features, circumstances and phenomena originated in the historical, political, cultural and socioeconomic environment and relations of power and dominance. Presenting the stories of three representatives of the Bulgarian Muslims minority the paper focuses on how European integration challenges their identity: their limited experiences in Europe were collected as a result of an attempt to escape the economic situation in the country, to get out of the traumas they feel with respect to the Bulgarian majority. Their stories present an interesting mixture of imagination and personal impressions of Europe. The paper explores the use of the qualitative method of autobiographical interview as a method for studding identity construction and development.

Tematem artykułu jest kwestia budowania tożsamości wśród bułgarskich muzułmanów – jednej z mniejszości w Bułgarii. Przyjmujemy założenie, iż ich tożsamość etniczna (zbiorowa) została ukształtowana wielowymiarowo, pod wpływem takich czynników jak: primordialność, nowoczesne i ponowoczesne cechy, zjawiska i zależności zakorzenione w środowisku ukształtowanym przez czynniki historyczne, kulturowe, polityczne i socjoekonomiczne tworzące relacje władzy i dominacji. W artykule prezentujemy narracje trzech przedstawicieli mniejszości bułgarskich muzułmanów i pokazujemy jak integracja europejska staje się wyzwaniem dla ich tożsamości. Ich narracje pokazują interesujące zestawienie wyobrażeń z biograficznym doświadczeniem Europy.

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu ukazanie przydatności wybranych aspektów analizy narracji w diagnozie klinicznej, w której - oprócz rozpoznania obrazu zaburzenia osobowości, mechanizmu psychopatologii i etiologii - istotne jest też poznanie sposobu doświadczania samego siebie przez pacjenta. Zakładamy, że wypowiedź pacjenta sama w sobie jest fenomenem psychicznym - sposobem konstrukcji (i przeżywania) zaburzenia, a analiza autonarracji pacjenta pozwala zrozumieć, jak konstruuje on swoją psychopatologię. Jako wiodącą koncepcję narracyjną wybrano do opisu kliniczny model narracyjnej organizacji doświadczenia (model of narrative development - Salvatore, Dimaggio i Semerari, 2004), a jako przykład kliniczny omówione zostało paranoiczne zaburzenie osobowości.

The article is aimed at presenting the usability of some aspects of self-narrative analysis in clinical diagnosis. Clinical diagnosis concerns not only the identification of nosological categories, mechanisms of psychopathology, or etiology, but also familiarity with patients' self-experience. It is assumed that the patient's narrative is a psychological phenomenon in itself; it is a way of construing and re-experiencing his or her disorder. Therefore, self-narrative analysis is expected to lead to an understanding of how psychopathology is construed in language. As the leading theoretical approach, the model of narrative development proposed by Salvatore, Dimaggio, & Semerari (2004) was chosen. In order to illustrate narrative analysis, examples of paranoid personality self-narrative accounts are presented.

The aim of the article is to analyze methodological aspects of implementing research project in a culturally different environment, where a language and national identity difference between interviewee and interviewer is present. The analysis is based on the fieldwork done by the Polish researcher in Ukraine. I try to answer whether different nationality influences in such situation the interaction with the interviewees and the results of the research, whether it is a burden or an advantage, and how this possible influence can be controlled. I am interested in issues of contact with the interviewees and interaction during the interview as such, as well as various kinds of the narrative’s modification by the interviewee because of the different nationality of the researcher. I illustrate the following problems with citations of the interviews conducted in the frame of the project.

Celem artykułu jest analiza metodologicznych aspektów prowadzenia badań w obcym kulturowo środowisku, w sytuacji różnic językowych i różnych identyfikacji narodowych badacza i rozmówcy. Analiza problemu podjęta została na przykładzie badań terenowych zrealizowanych przez polską badaczkę na Ukrainie. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy odmienna narodowość ma w takiej sytuacji wpływ na interakcję z rozmówcami oraz otrzymywany materiał, czy jest ona obciążeniem czy zaletą, a także w jaki sposób można ten wpływ kontrolować. Interesuje mnie kwestia kontaktu z rozmówcami i interakcji podczas samego wywiadu oraz różnego rodzaju przypadki modyfikowania narracji przez rozmówcę ze względu na odmienną identyfikację narodową badacza. Prezentację poszczególnych problemów pojawiających się w toku realizacji badań i analizy materiału ilustruję fragmentami nagranych w ramach badań wywiadów.
