"The author presents the influence of reflections on religion in the last decades, which radically changed the way of perceiving the reality which this concept define. The author claims that the main factor on these changes had cultural anthropology, and its influence on theology. In this context Clifford Geertz formulated the most famous definition of religion. Religion is an open process which is subjected to a constant progress, elaborations, and alterations. The most radical attitude was held by C.W. Smith who, already in the sixties, suggested to reject the concept of religion itself and postulated to concentrate on the context of the believers’ experiences. For the cultural anthropologist the changes in theology are a fascinating field of observation. The concept of „symbol” was called to mind for using two realities – human and divine – which it evoked. The intensity of the debate is not a new phenomenon, it only confirms the vitality of this field of research. Its uncertain methodological status is not a limitation, but rather a peculiar challenge."
Field research is a special kind of cognitive procedure. Paul Rabinow, like no other in the history of anthropology, had revealed the „anatomy“ of this procedure characterizing cognitive activities involved in this kind of research. "Reflections on Fieldwork in Morocco" tell us about the identity of anthropology more than some of the discussions which took up on this subject. Rabinow delivers a critical evaluation of the modernist model of anthropology by disclosing discrepancies between assumptions and methods and actual conditions of acquiring knowledge about investigated reality. But what is even more important: he demythicizes anthropology by demonstrating that what is rendered by anthropology is not the reality itself but its presentation. Rabinow gives thereby a new identity to anthropology. The anthropology is still defined by the method of ethnographic fieldwork but this method is conceived as a reconstruction of a process of interpersonal interaction.
This work is the prolegomenon to my doctoral dissertation. It is not a part of it, the only contribution presenting strategies, which I used during my work on texts. My future work is about Portuguese anthropology. It is a presentation of discipline development by illustrating selected anthropological books and their detailed interpretation. This article depicts the research techniques and methods which I used to interpret scientific texts and the general outline of the history of anthropology in Portugal. It shows the way in which the young anthropologist, from a country differing culturally and historically, will analyze the work of Portuguese intellectuals. It presents the way how Polish anthropologist was writing about the anthropology in Portugal and it shows a comprehensive set of methods that I used as the schemes to interpret the selected texts.

Prezentowana praca ma charakter prolegomeny do rozprawy doktorskiej. Nie stanowi jej części, jest jedynie przyczynkiem ukazującym strategie przeprowadzonej pracy badawczej nad tekstami. Pisana przeze mnie dysertacja naukowa dotyczy antropologii portugalskiej. Stanowi prezentację dróg rozwoju dyscypliny, poprzez zobrazowanie wybranych przeze mnie okresów historycznych, prac antropologicznych oraz ich szczegółową interpretację. Poniższa praca zawiera metody i techniki badań wykorzystywane do interpretowania tekstów naukowych. Ukazuje ona sposób, w jaki młody antropolog z odmiennego kulturowo i historycznie kraju, będzie analizował dzieła portugalskich intelektualistów.
In the first part of the article the traditional meaning of the ritual is analysed. Then, the ritual is presented in the light of transactional analysis. Finally, the author discusses similarities and differences in different concepts of the ritual. The article does not attempt to address the complexity of this concept; its aim is to contribute to the discussion on the interdisciplinary nature of transactional analysis. The author’s aim is to exemplify the possibilities of applying this theory in humanities and social sciences.
Quality sociologists and culture anthropologists comparatively rarely examine the question of a lie. It is more often the concern of research by psychologists mainly by means of quantity methods. It seems to be resulting from some difficulties in the research itself which is connected with the accurate recognition of a lie. The article discusses the abovementioned difficulties and at the same time it points to the possibilities to overcome them based on chosen quality research concerning lie. It further stresses some advantages arising from the analysis of the question in the quality frame, based on research carried out in Catholic Centre of Crisis Intervention for women at risk of prostitution or those who strive to stop prostituting.

Socjolodzy jakościowi i antropolodzy kultury stosunkowo rzadko badają zagadnienie kłamstwa.
This article focuses on a relatively new area of communicology and communication research, which is the history of communication. The historical approach to communication phenomena (or “reflexive historicising”) is derived from some important and influential fields of communication research, e.g. the Toronto School of Communication, ritual view of communication, intellectual history and history of mentalities (Annales School), cultural anthropology and others. This paper intends to investigate the position of communication history among other branches of modern humanities as well as its relation to some significant approaches in social history and cultural anthropology, namely the history of ideas (or intellectual history) and history of mentalities. This article outlines the origins and current state of communication history and connects its main fields (mostly the history of collective images or representations of communication) with the two above mentioned approaches.
This article results from a research project recently started at the Institute of Saxon History and Cultural Anthropology (Dresden) which aims to analyse “contact zones” in the Polish-Czech-German Border Region. It gives an insight into the work programme, discusses the methodological approach and presents some interim results. The time frame for the cultural-anthropological research project is set with reference to historical developments in these borderlands since World War II. The core questions of the project are how representations and functions of commemorative culture are performed and how the past and the present are negotiated in the border regions: How do people cope with their own past and the official representation of history? Which consequences are still visible today, after Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland became EU-members? What kind of new impulses have been derived from those mostly young residents who have chosen the border regions as their home today? How does transnational cooperation work in this context? The thesis is that there are many cross-border activities as well as many obstacles that hinder cooperation.

Niniejszy artykuł jest jednym z efektów realizacji projektu badawczego niedawno rozpoczętego w Instytucie Historii Saksonii i Antropologii Kulturowej (Drezno), którego celem jest przeanalizowanie "stref kontaktu" w polsko-czesko-niemieckim regionie przygranicznym. Tekst zarysowuje plan pracy, omawia podejście metodologiczne i przedstawia wstępne rezultaty badań.
The article discusses views on upbringing as a cultural phenomenon. It analyses two ideas characteristic of modern pedagogy: 1) the conviction that children should be helped in some way by means of education in order to make them better people, and 2) the complaint that school education is disconnected from everyday life. Both ideas are analysed in the context of the place they occupy in the functioning of contemporary societies. In conclusion I suggest that their role consists in reproducing – rather than changing – the modern society.
The academic center of ethnological research in Cieszyn has a clearly defined profile, which distinguishes it from other centers of this kind in Poland. Its specificity results primarily from the research interests of the staff, which focus on the issues of cultural and ethnic borderlands and on contemporary socio-cultural transformations, including the role of tradition in the life of postmodern communities. The rich and multifaceted achievements over the past twenty-five years of the center’s operation can be seen as an obligation on the part of the researchers encouraging them to make further consistent efforts to consolidate its position on the map of ethnological studies in Poland, to make their research more effective, and to enhance and broaden international cooperation. A materialization of the idea of creating a permanent ethnological research institution in Silesia, the center plays an important and admittedly unique role in integrating research on cultural phenomena and processes in Central Europe.
The article appeared first in the journal of the Polish Ethnological Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Ludoznawcze) “Lud” in 1899. It concerns the observation of the significance of names in the Jewish culture and faith. The author describes what is the significance of christening (giving names) by the Jewish people and portrays existing rules in this regard partly derived from the Jewish religion, and partly from the Jewish tradition.
Background. By reference to the globalisation of culture, the theory of cross-cultural dialogues and to concepts of body technique,an anthropology and culture-related study was undertaken to investigate an event and its participants. This was a scientific symposium and methodology seminar on the fighting arts and combat sports. Hence, this description and discussion matches the both the concept of “martial arts tourism” and “scientific tourism” at the same time. Problem. This is, on the one hand factography – a description of an event which is important for the fighting arts community and for research into martial arts. On the other hand, since we here focus on a meeting of leaders of a few specialised organisations, this is an attempt to explain the meaning of such meetings and to discuss the symbolism of the place, which is an important destination for martial arts tourism. Method. A study of one case was applied, with a focus on the sharing of knowledge and also on symbolic meaning. Being both a witness to and participant in the event described here, the author uses the method of participatory observation. This is a type of anthropological and cultural field study which indirectly explains the goals and purpose of organising and taking part in such events. Additionally, an analysis of photographic factography (visual sociology) was carried out. Results. The study presents an event, highlighting its symbolic dimensions. It investigates the cognitive effects of sharing knowledge related to the history and teaching of martial arts and their health-related effects, as well as controversial aspects. It discusses motivation for involvement, preferred training methods and the symbolic dimension of the place. Indirectly, this is also a description of the institutional advancement of a few organisations operating in the area of fighting arts. Conclusions. The report from the symposium and the meeting of leaders, with a focus to its scientific and educational dimension, shows the uniqueness of the event. It was important for some organisations of fighting arts, for their institutional development, and for participants – especially, because of the training methodology. A description of a journey and visit, with participatory observation, provides inspiration for martial arts and scientific tourism, and contributes to historical knowledge. Owing to this, new knowledge emerges, relating to cultural dialogues and innovations in teaching)

Ponadto zastosowano analizę faktografii fotograficznej (socjologia wizualna). Wyniki. Przedstawiono wydarzenie z akcentem na wymiary symboliczne. Opisano poznawcze efekty wymiany wiedzy w zakresie historii sztuk walki, ich nauczania, aspektów zdrow- otnych, dyskusji i kontrowersji. Wskazano motywy udziału, preferowane metody treningu i wymiar symboliczny miejsca. Pośrednio – jest to opis zaawansowania instytucjonalnego kilku organizacji działających w dziedzinie fighting arts. Wnioski.
Abstract: The goal of this contribution is to discuss the question of separation or connection of the sacred and the secular spheres in the prehistory. The basis for these considerations were the results of excavations carried out in Kunowo, Stargard district, site 4, where a biritual burial ground and a related settlement of the Gustow group population dated to the early Roman influence period was unearthed.
The article aims at exploring the anthropological notion of shame in the circum- -Mediterranean culture and at showing its impact on the interpretation of the New Testament. Shame in this culture was not perceived – like today – as a kind of negative emotion but as social anti-value, the antonym of honor. Depending on the social status of a family in which one was born, he or she participated in honor or shame of relatives. Every man was obliged to acquire each day honor for himself and his family. Honor being a limited good could be lost. Loosing honor meant that the whole family, real or fictive, ran into shame. Examining three passages from the New Testament, namely Jesus genealogy (Matt. 1:1-17), his confrontations with Pharisees and Scribes narrated in Mark 11 – 12, and passion narrative according to John 18 – 19, the author of the article shows the impact of honor and shame culture for proper understanding of the message of the New Testament.

The paper covers the issue of cultural and ethnological perspective in contemporary criminology. The author presents various theories that are currently developing worldwide, addressing the problem of the role of culture (in the anthropological sense of the word) and its influence on the aetiology of criminal behaviour, social reaction to crime, and creation of role-modelling in different societies. The presentation is focussed mostly on the cultural and criminological comparison of three countries the United States of America, Great Britain and Canada – and their homicide data. These countries, although seemingly similar in many ways when traditionally analysed in criminology, differ significantly in terms of murder – not only statistically, but also at a deeper and more complex historical level. The author describes these differences, arguing that the cultural approach to criminological issues is crucial in explaining violence. The last part of the paper focuses on case-study examples from all the three countries under discussion; this serves as an illustration to the author’s postulate of incorporating the ethnological studies and research into the system of criminology.
Today’s anthropology attempts to relate the historicity and culturality of its concepts, viewpoints, and methods to the historicity and culturality of what is under investigation. Anthropology examines the findings of the human sciences and develops a critique of itself based on historical and cultural philosophy, thereby paving the way for the investigation of new questions and issues. At the heart of these efforts lies a restlessness of mind that cannot be stilled. Research in anthropology is not limited to certain cultural contexts or single epochs. Reflections on the integral historicity and culturality of the research enable the discipline to leave behind the Euro-centricity of the human sciences and to focus on the unresolved problems of the present and the future. This aim implies skepticism toward all-encompassing and universal anthropological interpretations, such as those occasionally found in biological science, for example. Anthropology is not a single discipline. It touches on many different sciences and disciplines, including philosophy. Speaking about anthropology in the humanities and social sciences, we have to consider the following five paradigms: 1) anthropology of evolution and hominization; 2) philosophical anthropology developed in Germany; 3) historical anthropology and the history of mentalities, initiated by historians in France and taking its cue from the Annales-School; 4) the American tradition of cultural anthropology, and 5) finally historical cultural anthropology. These paradigms also provide the basis for educational anthropology.

Mówiąc o antropologii nauk humanistycznych i społecznych należy rozważyć pięć następujących paradygmatów: 1) antropologię ewolucji i hominizacji; 2) antropologię filozoficzną opracowaną w Niemczech; 3) antropologię historyczną i historię mentalności, zapoczątkowane przez historyków we Francji i czerpiące inspiracje ze Szkoły Annales; 4) amerykańską tradycję antropologii kulturowej, 5) wreszcie antropologię historyczno- kulturową.

The paper builds on settlements of psychology, especially of experimental social psychology, and refers to sociology and cultural anthropology as well. It outlines and illustrate by selected examples the peculiarities of psychological universals without biological foundations. It is argued that they are the results of usefulness of psychological attributes/mechanisms in cultural adaptations to natural environment. The universals of cultural genesis do not have the equivalents in the nomothetical sciences. They usually appear in various cultural/historical contexts with varying frequency and intensity, and sometimes perform there diverse functions. Accordingly, the social psychology theories that focus on such universals unavoidably differ from the theories typical of natural sciences, which are perceived by social psychologists as the matchless ideal.

The article presents a brief history of natural medicine based on substances derived from plants, practiced in the world from the earliest days up until the era of presentday chemistry-based pharmaceuticals. The unusual properties of phytotherapy applied from the ancient times in various cultural and civilizational communities have been shown. The author describes the means available to the ancients, as well as the experiments and discoveries made by scholars of later ages. Attention was paid to the observations important for the development of medicine, medical anthropology and ethnobotany.
The article attempts to present regionalism in its most primary form that is a positive emotional attitude to the occupied territory. This type of bondconditions regionalism that is currently defined in a variety of ways, primarily as a broad trend of social activity. The beginnings of lasting relationships between a man and a closer or further environment can be found in the distant times of cognitive revolution when a man acquired an ability to use abstractnotions which started to influence their individual and collective life. Agrarian revolution reinforced essential features of elementary regionalism.

Rewolucja agrarna utrwaliła zasadnicze cechy regionalizmu elementarnego.
In its first part, the article shows the variety of interpretations of “political anthropology” within scientific research and proposes their classification. Coming from that point, in the second part of the article, the author presents the arguments on the need of different from up to date existing anthropological approach within political science research. Taking into account that crucial problems of current political discourse are connected with different visions of man presented by different political actors, the author shows that only by integrating the two methodological approaches in political anthropology (philosophical and ethno-cultural) political science can successfully tackle the most important issues of current political discourse.
