The article sketchily surveys Zbigniew Herbert’s mythological prose texts from Król Mrówek, which remained unpublished during his lifetime. A suite of analytical and interpretive considerations intends to present Herbert as an author who took up the task of investigating the consistency of the Mediterranean myth. The article applies twentieth-century mythology studies tools to situate Herbert’s book within literary tradition. In his apocrypha Herbert subjects mythological tradition to a renarration; he shows appreciation for characters traditionally devoid of the grace to speak and reinstates their hitherto deformed human faces. Simultaneously, Herbert undermines the inevitability, necessity, and permanence of the verdicts of the fate which, in traditionally narrated mythology, stands as the final instance bringing back the cosmic order.
In the late Middle Ages, it was an accepted belief that the end of the world would be announced by fifteen cosmic signs. Similar motifs can be found in relatively numerous beggar’s songs from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Their sources can be located in medieval Latin hymns, Apocrypha, and Old Polish literature. These inspirations include the Bible, Apocrypha, De Civitate Dei of St. Augustine, Crisias of Verecundus da Iunca, The Golden Legend written by Jacobus de Voragine, Przeraźliwe echo trąby ostatecznej (The Terrifying Echo of the Doomsday Trumpet) by Klemens Bolesławiusz and others. This article is an attempt to prove that authors of beggar’s songs establish a dialogue with the tradition and introduce their own motifs, which are characteristic of the times in which they lived.

Teksty te, wykorzystujące postaci, motywy i symbole obecne w Piśmie Świętym, mają często charakter profanacji czy obrazoburstwa, lecz propagując treści stojące niejednokrotnie w sprzeczności z kanonem, paradoksalnie utrzymują go w centrum semiosfery.

"The aim of the paper is to analyze transformations of the religious symbol. Various unorthodox uses of the symbol may be found in modern apocrypha. The texts utilize some biblical figures and motifs, which can be regareded as a profanity. Although their contents are often contradictory to the biblical canon, the traditional myth as it is presented in them paradoxically remains in the centre of the semiosphere. An analysis of this kind of transformations of the religious symbol enables us to see the role it plays in the processes of cultural autocommunication. Those unorthodox uses connect the traditional with the modern and allow dynamically changing culture „to remember” its own roots. The fact that culture is able to communicate with itself is a basic condition of its cohesive identity. The religious symbol is the oldest and most permanent medium of cultural memory and its transformations (profane or not) enhance the memory. As used in a new context, symbol does not lose its previous meanings but gains new ones instead. In the process its semantic wealth becomes apparent. The changes and reinterpretations of the symbol prevent the ossification of culture."
The article deals with transformations, "creative translations" and iconoclastic uses of a religious symbol. Such treatments are employed with particular inten- sity in the field of literary texts that can be defined as the so-called contemporary apocryphal narrative. Therefore, analysed here are selected works of such "writ- ers-iconoclasts" as Nikos Kazantzakis, José Saramago, or Philip Pullman. These texts, understood as cultural documents, are read from the semiotic perspective, which seems to be particularly useful in the thought of the origins, methods and results of transformation of the symbolic figure of Jesus of Nazareth. Using these methods, one can see the culture-semiotic potential of semantic shifts taking place within the religious symbolism, and thus reflect inidentity-forming mecha - nisms based on nurturing source myths (a phenomenon which also occurs, per- haps somewhat paradoxically, in any act of transgressing a taboo). In the "new gospels", the religious symbol may be translated from the language of the sacred into the profane, thus gaining new semantic potentials while preserving all its traditional meanings and previous readings. In this process of "creative transla- tion" it is subjected to a process of revitalisation, which prevents him from being cast into the "semantic wasteland" and allows for its continued operation in the centre of the cultural universe of meanings.

Artykuł traktuje o przeobrażeniach, „twórczych przekładach” i obrazoburczych użyciach symbolu religijnego.
The article is devoted to the Latin poem De spledidissimo Christi Jesu triumpho carmen by Martin Kromer who was one of the biggest writers of the Polish Renaissance. A theme of the work is time when Jesus Christ became alive again three days after his death. The theme are also miraculous events which took place after his Resurrection. The poet is supplementing records of the Gospel, introducing into his poem the action which isn’t complicated. He is talking about guards who stood by the grave. He is also describing the reaction of the nature which expressed its sadness because of the death of the Saviour. In the context of the report on the Resurrection, the poet is referring to the figures of ancient world belonging both to mythology, as well to history. In his artistic work Kromer isn’t presenting typical Apocrypha, he proposes a different perspective, having only character of the Apocrypha.
This study is an attempt to describe a manuscript cantional written at the end of the first half of the 18th century by an unknown author – Walenty Józef Wcisłowski. The manuscript had been in the Załuski Brothers’ book collection till June 1795, when pursuant to Catherine the Great’s decision the Załuski Library was sent from Warsaw to Saint Petersburg. Presently the cantional is in the National Library of Poland. We know about the author only that he wrote rhymed theology which was published in the 18th century. This article contains the analysis of some hymns from the cantional. Special attention is paid to the explanation of theological contexts of presented verses and to the presentation of Walenty Wcisłowski’s literary skills and biblical erudition. The purpose of my text was to indicate an influence of medieval apocrypha on religious consciousness of the poet and the way he explains the mystery of faith.
The paper is devoted to the problem of the (Judeo-)Christian (biblical) tradition functioning in (post-)modern culture from the perspective of the history of ideas. The starting point is the metamorphosis of both the Bible as a text and apocrypha as its creative (re)interpretation. The objects of interest are literary paraphrases of the Evangelic story about Judas as a figure of the fallen man. In order to reveal the fundamental ideological changes of (post-)modernity there are presented functionalizations of the greatest sinner in modern Bulgarian apocrypha. It is shown that authors’ metamorphosis of Judas have made him a significant figure of the (post-)modern man. Therefore, the (post-)modern metamorphosis of the (Bulgarian) apocrypha about the God’s traitor on the one hand show the effects of the collapse of the Enlightenment project of human emancipation, and thus testify to the process of the man’s sliding into the tragic immanence, on the other − they reveal − according to Charles Taylor, Agata Bielik-Robson and Philip Rieff − the sense-making potential of para-phrase as a poetic repetition.
W artykule przedstawiono różne typy marginaliów znajdujących się w Rozmyślaniach dominikańskich – średniowiecznej narracji biblijno-apokryficznej, którą w 1958 r. odnalazł Karol Górski. Zarysowano podstawowe problemy badawcze, charakterystyczne dla każdej z wydzielonych grup glos: glosy informujące o dziejach kodeksu; glosy zawierające modlitwy; glosy lokalizujące, odsyłające do Pisma Świętego; glosy komentujące.

This paper presents the various types of marginal notes found in the Rozmyślania Dominikańskie - a medieval biblical and apocryphal narrative which was discovered by Karol Górski in 1958. The fundamental research issues specific to each group of marginal notes are presented - those concerning the history of the codex; those which contain prayers; those which refer to the Bible; and those which commentate. The article also indicates an issue requiring separate analysis - different types of annotations in and around the illustrations.

The aim of the article is a graphic analysis of "Sprawa chędoga o męce Pańskiej", an apocryph forming part of the codex of Wawrzyniec from Łasko. The analysis proves that in the scope of the most numerous apocrypha attested in the text, it attests to different frequency states, and the probable textual border between them falls between pages 42 and 42v of the codex. The collected data led to the formulation of the hypothesis that Wawrzyniec of Łask did not interfere in the graphic structure of the transcribed manuscript.

The aim of the analysis is an attempt to determine the time of creating Sprawa chędoga o męce Pana Chrystusowej and Ewangelia Nikodema, the apocrypha included in the codex of Wawrzyniec from Łasko of 1544, on the basis of lexemic repartition of genitive and dative forms of masculine nouns. The analysis confirms the findings so far in this scope – inflectional phenomena attested in both texts present different linguistic states, and their specificity proves the old age of Sprawa chędoga language, which has the characteristics of the language of the fifteenth century.
Rozmyślanie przemyskie to XVI-wieczny, liczący 426 kart, całkowicie pozbawiony interpunkcji apokryf.

Rozmyślanie przemyskie [The Przemyśl Meditation] is a 16th-century apocrypha, comprising 426 cards, and completely devoid of punctuation. The article presents an analysis of selected punctuation differences in the two editions of this text: Chrestomatiastaropolska and the Freiburg edition. Punctuation inserted by publishers in transcriptions, illustrate their understanding of the syntax of the text. They are interpretations. Punctuation proposed in the editions under analysis should be treated as a voice in discussion, and not as the only source of syntactic solution.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of modern apocrypha from the perspective of cultural studies. The term ‘apocrypha’ is usually associated with early Christian and Gnostic texts, but the tradition of unorthodox writings is also continued in modern Western culture. It is not easy to formulate a comprehensive definition of apocrypha by analyzing this phenomenon only from the perspective of literary, historical and religious studies. The phenomenon of apocrypha is so complex that it should be described based on a kind of methodological bricolage. This method should allow one to understand the role that apocrypha play in modern culture. Many scholars have noticed that it is not possible to point to clear and obvious criteria that would allow us to assign a given text to the category of apocryphal writings. Most typologies of texts which are epistemologically valuable and which help scholars to identify certain features of apocryphal writings do not take into consideration the cultural qualities of non-canonical, unorthodox narratives. From the perspective of cultural studies, modern apocrypha can be seen not only as literary or religious texts but also as an important element of cultural autocommunication. As an element of cultural metacognition, apocrypha can also be regarded as a medium of cultural memory and collective identity.

Questions about the Latin sources of medieval Polish texts have been asked from the outset of research in the origins of Polish religious language. The new edition of Rozmyślanie przemyskie (Przemyśl Meditation), in which Latin sources are juxtaposed with Old-Polish text, has triggered interest in sources among Polish historical linguists, most of whom have accepted the existing lists of sources. The article points to a number of problems for which new solutions have been found thanks to a new search for Latin sources. The author is convinced that while searching for sources is not the task of the history of language, it should continually accompany studies on the oldest religious texts.
It stands to reason that ekphrasis cannot be limited to the detailed but plain description of the artifact, for it often concerns what is not there in the painting as well. Authors of the ekphrases sometimes “animate” or “revive” a work of art, which manifests itself in narrativization of painted scenes. The process is also frequently supplemented by its continuation or backstory and fictitious utterances of figures depicted in the painting. The paper discusses a specific literary form of that kind of “animation”, that is texts in which characters that can be seen in a painting (or paintings itself) receive the voice through the prosopopoeia and expose their selfawareness of “artificiality”. The precise subject of this study is P. Assouline’s novel Le Portrait which is narrated by baroness Betty de Rothschild, the figure from the J.A.D. Ingres’ painting. In this article, I am focusing on the mode and meaning of prosopopoeia in Assouline’s novel. I am also trying to examine whether every text that is based on the concept of a “speaking” work of art (i.e. in which prosopopoeia is used) can be described as ekphrasis.
