The paper sets out to analyse Conrad’s novella A Smile of Fortune and its narrator-protagonist’s crisis of identity in terms of the Jungian concept of individuation. The dynamic process of constructing the narrative identity, as defined by Ricoeur, finds its psychological equivalent in the concept of individuation which involves recognizing and assimilating the opposites that reside within the unconscious and aims at transforming the psyche into the Self or coincidentia oppositorum. The paper focuses on the narrator’s interaction with Jacobus and Alice as the stages of the individuation process which include a confrontation with the shadow and the anima, the archetypes of the unconscious.

The paper identifies the types of female figures present in the works of three well-known fantasy writers, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling, discussing the ways in which these characters are presented, their relationship with other characters, and their role in the economy of the novel, which is more important than may appear from a first reading. It also tries to explain the reasons that prompted the above-mentioned authors to choose these female hypostases.

In the time leading up to and immediately following the collapse of the USSR, processes of national self-identification in the formerly Soviet republics were revived anew. Ideologues and culture workers mined the distant past for the raw materials with which to re-activate new forms of national identity, and also to distance themselves from the traumas of imperialism. Written and published in the midst of these processes, Berik Dzilkibayev’s 2001 work Kazakh Erotic Novel is something of a mythological text, with ritual elements symbolizing the constant evolution of the fate of nations. This article analyzes Kazakh Erotic Novel from the perspective of psychoanalytic and cognitive literary criticism, while also situating the work historically in post-independence Kazakhstan. The novel narrates the emergence of the newly-independent Kazakh state, with its heightened energy potential, onto the world stage, while simultaneously exploring the act of returning to one’s roots – to the origins of one’s ethnic group – by replicating the act of creation of a society and its accompanying sovereignty. To broadcast the competitiveness of a young Kazakh country on the world stage, the author uses erotic images and motives that have an increased aggressive potential. In Dzilkibayev’s novel the image of the enemy, the hated Soviet Empire, which served as a unifying force for the Kazakhs, takes on the form of another opponent – the West – which is presented as fundamentally opposed to an imagined Eastern mentality. This difference is attributed to structural differences between Western monotheism and Tengrism, the animist religion of the Kazakhs, which took on renewed significance in the post-Soviet era.

The article analyzes the multi-faceted personality of the Kazakh blacksmith in ethnotraditional perception compared with the culture of other nations. Such parameters as birth and “magical” diversion of hereditary gift, professional etiquette and the social status of the blacksmith have been considered. The attention has been paid to such qualities of the blacksmith as spiritual self-control, lack of greed, strength and nobility of character. The mentioned is justified by the idea that the moral defects of a master can enter into conflict with his sacred activities which could lead his family to misfortune.

Biblioterapia integralna

The main objective of my dissertation is to introduce the assumptions of the Jungian depth psychology to the bibliotherapeutic process. Bibliotherapy as an interdisciplinary method using psychology and literary studies enriched with the theory of integral psychology formulates a new theoretical perspective and constitutes a proposal of a holistic view of bibliotherapy. The extension of the theoretical basis of bibliotherapy will help to augment the therapeutic effect, activate unawareness (the sphere neglected in school education), and strengthen psyche. Integral bibliotherapy will create conditions to expand the dialogue between the rational side and unaware one, and it will contribute to a positive stimulation of the integration processes. Providing archetypal patterns reflecting the rules of life in culture, and drawing attention to the regulatory role of literary works, will enrich both the intellectual and spiritual side of the development of the participant of the bibliotherapeutic process. Archetypal content present in literary texts studied by the participant according to the bibliotherapeutic procedure will achieve an integral orientation focused on the humanistic dimension of existence.

This paper analyses Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian in the context of Jungian psychological archetypes. Hesse’s in-depth interest in psychoanalysis is evident in his works. The content of Demian was particularly influenced by Carl Jung’s psychoanalytic concepts since the author had undergone Jungian psychoanalytic treatment prior to writing the novel. The paper claims that most major characters in Demian are in fact personifications of Jungian archetypes of: self, shadow, and anima. It is indicated that it would be impossible to understand the novel properly without basic knowledge of these archetypes. It is demonstrated that Demian is in fact a novel dealing with the inner psychological development of an individual even though it may not appear so if the characters and events are interpreted literally.

Adaptations of classic children’s stories, especially fairytales and fables, are very popular among today’s publishers. Those adaptations, not necessarily done correctly, often confuse the audience, especially those who are not familiar with the originals, and therefore will not notice the changes destructive to the story. I will try to explain what exactly causes this “damage”, also affecting the youngest, most trusting listeners, namely children, on the example of Grimm brothers’ “Rapunzel”, and its adaptations into literary and animated versions.

Rather than relegating the study of rhetoric to the past, and confining it to its traditional analyses of ceremonial, forensic, and political speeches, the author argues that it has much to say to and about contemporary popular culture. Rhetoric enables students to understand how they and their communities are shaped by the economically, culturally, and socially influential products of American popular culture, such as films, television series, and video games. Such knowledge, the author contends, equips students with the media literacy required to make informed decisions when purchasing products, casting a vote, and so on. Some practical advice regarding how to connect rhetorical analyses to American popular culture is provided.

This article presents Jindřich Štyrský, arepresentative of the Czech interwar avant-garde, the creator of theory of art, poet, literary theorist, scandalist of his era. The analysis of two of his literary works is based on the terms of depth psychology, and refers to the concepts of archetypes, the anima and the process of individuation, which constitute the key to understanding certain motifs in the sensual, saturated with eroticism, sometimes bordering on pornography, works of Štyrský. This sensuality, saturation with eroticism are essential components associated with the recurring motif of woman-anima, aguide of the soul of the artist. Jindrich Štyrský fit in perfectly in the currents of his era by using those motifs.

W artykule autor opisuje i analizuje wzorce archetypowe wojownika i zwycięzcy w kontekście działań edukacyjnych i wychowawczych.

In the present article, the author attempts to describe the role of the Warrior and the Winner as archetype models within the context of educational activity. He carries out an in-depth analysis of Ken Carter’s (a teacher and trainer) behaviours, emotions and actions, which accompanied him during many years of work with high school students of Richmond High School in California. This example is the most important part of the analysis as it illustrates the process of identifying with the archetypal roles of the Warrior and the Winner and demonstrates their practical applications in real-life situations. Moreover, the author attempts to show these archetypal models in a broader cultural, social and educational context, referring to rich literature of the subject in the field of cultural anthropology, psychology and pedagogy, as well as to the transactional analysis concept.

The article presents an analysis of Vitezslav Nezvala’s mini-novel Valerie and her week of miracles in which the author refers to the motif of initiation in terms of psychology and the theory of archetypes. Furthermore, the presented paper deals with the issues of experimenting with the convention of Gothic novel, grotesque, parody and horror. By analyzing the successive stages of the main character’s initiation, the author points out some literary devices that let the mini-novel become a part of the Czech avant-garde movement of the interwar period.

The cycle 24 Etudes in All Major and Minor Keys op. 44 by Józef Wieniawski (1837-1912) demonstrates the essential unity of the virtuoso and the composer in a dynamic process of transforming the genre. This played an important part in providing innovative solutions not only in relation to piano-playing, but also in its significant influence on the development of texture, diversification of the instrumental sound and the expansion of means of musical expression in nineteenth-century piano music. Wieniawski, following Transcendental etudes or Concert etudes by Liszt, whose pupil he was in Weimar, blurs the boundaries between improvisation and composition; he draws attention to the unique nature of interpretation, its singularity and the specificity of the moment in time when the work is performed. Continuing the tradition of the grand cyclic form as a special kind of universum, he implements the concept of diversity in unity. The 24 characteristic miniatures reveal contextual links, intra-musical relationships, and the quest for individual solutions. This problematic concerns issues such as symbolic references, which lead one to an extensive catalogue of expressive qualities.

This short essay wants to look at beat literature as a medium that has re-introduced in popular feelings the possibility to change the world, transforming its social rules by using new technologies as instruments for emancipation. Stating this, the essay links the beat movement to hipster’s hopes of the beginning of the XX century, with the need to reflect on the meaning of two WW as barriers to people’s emancipation. From the non-academic side of the perspective, the essay indicates some special sources, trying to demonstrate how beat literature has shaped new meanings to words like “occult”, “magic”, linking them with other words like “awareness” and “emancipation”. Doing this, a tribute is given to the historical role played by the magazine “International Times” as living witness of the years when beat literature was germinating into the generational protest. The conclusions are oriented towards the meaning in the present for a beat attitude to (social) life, with the new awareness of the way indicated by Allen Ginzberg about the unuseful dimension of drugs as instruments to get the vision, and the need to substitute them with natural tools to be able to extract them from unconscious through yoga and meditation systems. This may help to create a new kind of people, involved in a cosmopolitan interpretation of life, able to interconnect by the new information and communication technologies, ready to create a new social intellect. Of course, we do not pretend to present this work of network as a strong link, rather, it seems to be a weak tie. Nevertheless, this weak tie in sociology is a concept used to indicate a relationship that is not as strong as quotidian family or professional relationships. The strength of weak ties theory affirms that weak ties provide access to new audiences where you could find opportunities or contrary opinions that would make ideas stronger, looking at how a person’s network can contribute to their success. Ideas are like germs and they don’t diffuse through populations of people at random, instead, they make their way through networks – that is the kind of relationships we may have with people, creating connections with others. The changes in communication system (Internet, on the immaterial side, the mobility system on the physical side) are creating new opportunities to create network both on the immaterial and on the physical side. Conference driven by intellectual affinities and wishes to know better each others culture seems to generate the conditions of a new kind of people, creating cosmopolitan attitude as something that can be shared by an increasing number of people.

Taki rodzaj wpływu często prowadzi do symulacji zasad demokracji, przygnębienia i bierności obywateli. Minimalizować manipulacje świadomości społecznej można m.in. za pomocą podniesienia poziomu kultury politycznej i świadomości obywateli, tworzenia otwartego systemu komunikacji między władzą a obywatelami czy rozwoju niezależnych mediów.

The essence of political myths, their structure and key functions have been analyzed in the article. The peculiarities of the political myths’ creation in the Ukrainian society have been also characterized. It has been determined that political myths are an effective tool of influencing the political culture and consciousness of the citizens and that they are being used by the present-day Ukrainian politicians in order to gain and keep power. The attention to the predominantly destructive role of political myths in the development of modern Ukrainian society has also been drawn in the article. The authors claim that with the development of the information society a political myth is becoming more adaptive and gains the ability to create an illusion of reality and its manipulative influence is becoming more masterly and less noticeable. This influence often leads to the simulation of the democratic principles, depression and passive attitude of the citizens. It is possible to minimize the social consciousness manipulation through raising the level of the political culture and consciousness of the citizens, forming an open communication system between authorities and citizens, developing independent mass media, etc.

This article investigates the gods and heroes of Greek myths by means of depth psychology’s notions of archetypes and collective unconscious. Its main goal is to take a closer look at the potential correlation between the external (in relation to the ego) figures of gods and goddesses as understood by the ancient Greeks (influencing them in a way similar to the Homeric heroes) and the internal manifestations of the collective unconscious, which may constitute – according to Jung – the essence of the ancient deities. The article also examines the influence (both positive and negative) of the “inner gods” on the individual way of thinking, feeling and acting. Lastly, the conclusion draws attention to the value of the irrational sphere – the source of the origin of the forgotten, polytheistic gods that inhabit the psyche of modern man.

Niniejszy tekst podejmuje kwestię bogów i bohaterów mitów greckich, odnosząc ją do obecnej w psychologii głębi koncepcji archetypów i nieświadomości zbiorowej.

Transformations are not only conditioned by facts encompassing narrower or wider panoramas: from concentrating on death and one (political) role (the ode of Horace), through recalling Cleopatra’s mature life and love (the drama of Shakespeare), to creating an image embracing the heroine’s whole life with its numerous roles, but as a mother and a daughter in the first place, because even her lovers resemble a father and a child (the fictional biography of Karen Essex). Above all, they appear to be more connected with different attitudes towards universal references lying within human cognitive abilities. Horace’s didactic opposition of contradictory patterns leads to the victory of one of them — and it is a linear pattern, as an equivalent of modern myth, which is accepted by the author himself. In Shakespeare, it takes a form of tragedy resulting from the fragmentary character of each pattern, one of which introduces change (archaic myth) and the other constancy (modern myth), and from a painful attempt to combine them. In Essex, the vision of the world in which archaic myth, strongly represented by a child, triumphs is utopian. Irrespective of the differences, all the works realize the essential role played by images developed by heroes, and especially by authors, in human cognition
