Około 1850 r. francuska gospodarka przeżywała kryzys finansowy. W teatrze pojawia się wówczas bohater, agioteur, który zapewnia sukces wielu komedii. Słowo wydaje się nowe, ale typ teatralny nie: dziedziczy on wiele cech komedii obyczajowej, a także aksjologię melodramatu. Na kanwie zapomnianej sztuki La Bourse François Ponsarda (1856) proponujemy analizę tego moralno-finansowy odczytu inwestycji finansowej jako utratę wartości i grę losową.

The 1850 financial crisis of the French economy woke the curiosity for investors who took risks at the newly opened Bourse, the Paris stock exchange. It provided the Parisian stage with a new character, the “agioteur” or “boursicoteur”, and with it many successful comedies. The term might be new, but the typology is not: the role is clearly linked to the comedy of manners and the morality of the melodrama. As can be seen in the 1856 comedy La Bourse by Ponsard, financial investments are condemned as a loss of value and games of chance.

Autour de 1850, l’économie française connaît une crise financière. Apparaît alors au théâtre un personnage, l’agioteur, qui assure le succès de nombreuses comédies. Le mot semble nouveau, pourtant le type théâtral ne l’est pas : il hérite de nombreux traits de la comédie de mœurs et de la comédie de caractères, ainsi que de l’axiologie du mélodrame. Autour d’une pièce aujourd’hui oubliée, La Bourse (1856) de Ponsard, on propose d’analyser cette lecture moralisatrice de l’investissement financier comme perte de valeur et jeu de hasard.
