Not long time ago it seemed that on the modern battlefield some categories of weaponry – including artillery – will not play a major role. The conflict in the eastern Ukraine shows how wrong we were and that this view should be quickly revised. Undoubtedly the war in Donbas region showed, that the artillery still plays an important role in the conventional conflict. Moreover, we can conclude, that in certain cases the artillery usage is almost crucial. The importance of artillery usage is emphasized by the experts in military and observers of the Ukrainian conflict – some of them cite the data, that up to 85% of casualties on both sides are caused by the artillery fire.
This article discusses the role of artillery in fire systems as a part of Joint Fire Support (JFS). The purpose of this article is to outline the functions, place and role of artillery as a component of JFS during operation and indicate important elements of JFS planning in the context of artillery. The article is mainly based on an analysis of the artillery of NATO and the USA. The author used theoretical research methods such as analysis and synthesis of information comprised in literature and source materials and the inference method to develop this article. The article described the main tasks and function of artillery in FS, the role and place of JFS in operation and selected elements of JFS planning. Artillery will executed fire support to create conditions that provide the supported commander freedom of action. Planning, coordinating and employment of all allocated JFS assets are essential parts of JFS. This is crucial to execute deconflict and avoid fratricide.
The article discusses the state of the Lithuanian Artillery Corps in the early years of the 18th century. Th e fi ndings are mainly based on a report prepared for the Lithuanian Fiscal Tribunal that concerned the corps’ income and expenses 1710–1717. Th e tribunal took place at the end of 1717 in Grodno. Th e Lithuanian Artillery Corps was practically non-existent in 1710 due to the losses incurred during previous wars, and the presence of both a demographic and fi nancial crisis in Lithuania at the time only added to the problem. In the following years funding was insuffi cient. Th is is evidenced by the fact that 1710–1717 funding for the corps amounted to Polish zlotys 96,000, whereas its expenses amounted to no less than Polish zlotys 170,000. Despite the lack of funds, by 1716 the condition of the corps had improved significantly, although no attempts were made to conduct a thorough reform of its fi nancing during the period in question. Between 1716–1717, the artillery was able to supply the infantry and dragoons of the Lithuanian army with only a few fi eld guns and ammunition. Th e Silent Sejm of 1717 did not increase the funding of the corps, which could now field up to 10 cannons, a satisfactory amount considering the size of the Lithuanian army at the time, i.e. approximately 6,100 soldiers. Th e available sources show that the Lithuanian Artillery Corps was quite small – in total about 30 soldiers served in its ranks, most of whom were born in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Dessen Sitzung fand Ende 1717 in Grodno statt.

The British and French troops deployed to the Gallipoli Peninsula suffered from a number of shortcomings. One of the most serious deficiencies was the weak artillery support. Some divisions had fewer guns than expected, whereas some had none at all. In addition, corps commanders had a limited number of heavy guns and howitzers at their disposal. Another drawback was the very modest supplies of ammunition and the lack of high-explosive shells. These problems made it impossible for the allies to destroy Ottoman field fortifications and counter the enemy’s artillery fire, which resulted in the failure of the invasion. During the campaign, the above problems were never resolved. Moreover, with the influx of subsequent units, the number of guns increased at a slower rate than the number of infantry divisions. Within a few months, the number of heavy guns was slightly increased, but the artillery situation remained difficult. This was due to the fact that the allied campaign on the Gallipoli Peninsula was secondary to the fighting in France. In fact, only those forces and resources that were considered unnecessary on the Western Front were sent to the Dardanelles. As a result of this situation, British and French troops could not count on adequate artillery support throughout the campaign.

The article examines the events that took place in Grodno during the World War I. It establishes and describes the periods of the Grodno garrison's participation in the military operations of 1914–1915. It elaborates on the regime of German occupation from September 1915 until April 1919. It is emphasized that the Grodno Fortress, despite the incompleteness of its fortification construction, was an important operational base for the Russian army. It served as the place of formation and training for military units that later fought in the warfare at the front. While it was used as the point of material and technical support for troops, it served as a strong moral beacon for the army and the local population. In the late 1918 and early 1919, as a result of political and military activity of national movements’ representatives, Grodno was transferred to the revived Polish State by the German command.
Artyleria to podstawowe wyposażenie każdej armii. Opracowanie zawiera przegląd współczesnych korporacji i zakładów zbrojeniowych działających w krajach Europy, produkujących różne rodzaje broni artyleryjskiej wraz ze szczegółowym katalogiem wytwarzanego sprzętu.

Artillery is the basic equipment of every army. The study contains a review of contemporary corporations and armaments factories operating in European countries, producing various types of artillery weapons together with a detailed catalog of manufactured equipment. For better presentation of the situation in this industry of the armaments industry, the distribution and structure of artillery production has also been shown in graphic form. Due to the limited volume possibilities, the subject of the study was narrowed down to those producers of artillery weapons who signed contracts for deliveries with even one army in Europe. Therefore, for example, producers not conducting mass production, producing only prototypes participating in armaments fairs, was not taken into account. The division of artillery weapons into several categories is considered: stationary barrel artillery, self-propelled barrel artillery and rocket and antiaircraft artillery. Due to the common classification in the chemical industry, the study omitted a group of producers of artillery ammunition and manufacturers of ship, tank and other departments, not used directly in artillery weapons. Also missile rocket manufacturers were omitted. Research on the condition of the armaments industry was made by the method of analyzing the current reporting of research institutes of the armaments industry and arms control. This allowed for a synthesis in the form of a map of the European armaments industry in the artillery branch, which is the objective of this study.
